Balagezong Snow Mountain, Shangri-La

Balagezong Snow Mountain (巴拉格宗雪山) is located in Nixi Township (尼西乡), northwest of Shangri-La City (香格里拉市), Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). It is situated at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet and is an important scenic spot in the Red Mountain area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage site. The mountain is in the central area of the Shangri-La tourist region, 50 kilometers from the city center. The highest peak of Balagezong Snow Mountain reaches an altitude of 5545 meters, making it the tallest peak in Shangri-La City.

History and Culture

Legend

Over 1300 years ago, it is said that the Tibetan tribal leader Sina Duoji abandoned his wealth and power to follow his wife, Renchen Lamu, who was tired of war. He led his people southward from Batang, Sichuan, and settled in Balagezong, forming the village of Bala (巴拉村). For centuries, the people of Bala lived in seclusion. Later, Sina Dingzhu spent ten years building a road to Balagezong, gradually bringing the area to the attention of the world.

Religious Beliefs

The local population mainly practices Tibetan Buddhism. Zhoma Lakang (卓玛拉康) within the scenic area is an important religious site, housing 21 statues of Tara, the goddess who saves and liberates sentient beings from suffering. She is widely worshipped in Tibetan Buddhist regions.

Festivals and Celebrations

During traditional festivals such as the Tibetan New Year, local Tibetans hold various celebrations, including chanting scriptures for blessings, horse racing, and song and dance performances.

Lifestyle and Customs

Bala Village has preserved intact Tibetan traditional architecture and culture. The locals continue to live in the ancient way, making traditional handicrafts and cooking Tibetan cuisine.

Weather

Balagezong has a vertical climate, with six distinct climatic zones from the valley to the mountain top: subtropical in the valley, warm temperate, temperate, cold temperate, sub-frigid, and frigid zones. The climate changes significantly, with "four seasons on one mountain." In winter, it is influenced by the westerlies from the Tibetan Plateau, while in summer, it is affected by the warm and humid air currents from the Indian Ocean.

Best Time to Visit

• Before May: The Shambhala Stupa and other attractions are still covered in snow, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
• May to November: The vegetation is lush, and the canyons and forests are picturesque. The climate is relatively mild, making it suitable for hiking and other activities. Many Tibetan pilgrims, photographers, and adventure enthusiasts visit during this period.

• Shangri-La Grand Canyon (香格里拉大峡谷): Stretching 154 kilometers, this canyon is one of the deepest in Yunnan and China. It is renowned for its "high, deep, and dangerous" features, as well as its "strange, magnificent, and unique" beauty. The canyon is connected by trails, and visitors can explore it via hiking trails or by rafting.
• Bala Village (巴拉村): Located at an altitude of 2900 meters, this village has a history of over 1300 years. It is an excellent place to experience Tibetan culture, customs, and traditions. Visitors can tour the Tibetan-style village architecture, visit the ancestral home of Sina Dingzhu, and enjoy coffee and scenic views at the "Yinshan Lin Ye" café.
• Shambhala Stupa (香巴拉佛塔): At an altitude of 4050 meters, this natural stupa is extremely spectacular when the Qudeng Sacred Mountain is covered in snow.
• Millennium Bodhi Tree (千年菩提树): Over 3000 years old, this tree stands on a cliff with branches that seem to cling to the rock face. Known as the "Phoenix Bodhi Tree," it has even grown a miraculous left hand of Buddha on its trunk.
• Echo Wall (回音壁): The world's highest natural echo wall, over 3000 meters above sea level, allows visitors to hear echoes when shouting towards the cliff. The area also features a glass plank road and aerial tram with a vertical drop of 700 meters, offering thrilling experiences and stunning views.

Transportation

External Transport

From Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城) in Shangri-La City, the distance is 80 kilometers, with a driving time of nearly 2 hours. You can drive along National Highway 214 towards Deqin and turn right at the crossroads of Shangqiao Village in Nixi Township to enter the scenic area road. Alternatively, you can take the scenic area shuttle bus near the ancient town, which departs at 8:30 - 9:00 in the morning and returns at 17:00 in the afternoon.

Internal Transport

Within the scenic area, visitors need to take a shuttle bus, which offers guided tours along the way. To visit the Shambhala Stupa, a separate shuttle bus ride is required at an additional cost.

Cuisine

• Nixi Clay Pot Chicken (尼西土锅鸡): Made with Nixi black pottery and local free-range chickens, this dish has a rich and delicious soup. Adding matsutake mushrooms enhances its flavor. Note that matsutake is a seasonal delicacy available only during the matsutake season.
• Butter Tea and Other Snacks: In the butter tea shop of Bala Village, you can enjoy authentic butter tea, as well as mint beef jerky, barley cakes, boiled potatoes, and steamed corn. Additionally, there are cafes, fried chicken shops, and barbecue stalls offering coffee, desserts, fried chicken, and grilled sausages.

• Handicrafts: In Bala Village, you can purchase traditional Tibetan handicrafts such as thangkas, Tibetan carpets, and silver jewelry. These items are exquisitely crafted and feature strong ethnic characteristics, making them excellent souvenirs.
• Specialty Foods: Local barley products and yak meat jerky are also worth buying. They offer an authentic taste of the Tibetan region and make great gifts for friends and family.
