  • Baohua Temple in Guandu District, Kunming

Baohua Temple(官渡区宝华寺) is located in Liujia Village (六甲村), Liujia Township (六甲乡), Guandu District (官渡区), Kunming. It is traditionally believed to have been founded by Jinglun Chan Master (净伦禅师), a disciple of the 23rd Patriarch of the Linji Sect (临济宗), Gutian Zushi (古庭祖师), during the Ming Dynasty. Baohua Temple has witnessed countless changes through the ages but has consistently focused on preserving Buddhist scriptures and promoting Buddhism to benefit society.

    History and Cultural Significance

Baohua Temple has long been an important venue for Buddhist and folk cultural activities during the Spring Festival in Old Kunming. It once stood as one of the iconic sites in Old Kunming. Over time, Baohua Temple has continued to uphold the mission of benefiting the people and serving society, becoming a cornerstone in the development of Buddhism in Yunnan.

Today, with the attention and support of various government authorities, Baohua Temple is undergoing a revival, restoring and promoting traditional auspicious activities. It is gradually becoming a central hub for Buddhist and folk cultural events in Yunnan.

    New Year Blessings and Celebration

On the 23rd of the month, Baohua Temple will host a grand Spring Festival Blessing and Thanksgiving Dinner, offering an opportunity for local citizens to experience Buddhism and immerse themselves in folk culture.

    Architectural Grandeur and Buddhist Influence

Baohua Temple stands as a significant Buddhist institution in Guandu District, Kunming. It is home to a pure and dedicated monastic community with more than 50 monks, supported by thousands of laypeople who have been devoted to the temple over the years. It is also the headquarters of the Guandu District Buddhist Association.

    Monastic Leadership and Temple Expansion

Under the guidance of Abbot Chonghua (崇化大和尚), the temple has emphasized the cultivation of monks, strict adherence to monastic rules, and the development of the Buddhist community. The temple’s expansion includes the construction of the Xumi Lecture Hall (须弥讲堂), a rare and grand structure capable of holding up to 1,000 people, which has become a prime venue for Buddhist exchanges and study in both Yunnan and China.

    Awards and Recognition

In 2011, Baohua Temple was recognized by the National Religious Affairs Bureau as a "National Advanced Temple for Creating Harmonious Religious Communities". Abbot Chonghua received an award in Beijing for his efforts in promoting harmony within the temple and wider community.

    Folk Cultural and Buddhist Activities

During the Spring Festival, Baohua Temple hosts numerous Buddhist and folk cultural activities. Visitors can engage in the temple's offerings, which symbolize the desire for peace, good health, and prosperity in the new year.

    Traditional Celebrations

In 2011, the temple launched a grand Buddhist and folk cultural celebration in conjunction with the Guandu District Party Committee to mark the Year of the Rabbit. The event offered visitors the chance to participate in traditional activities such as incense burning, making wishes, and enjoying the vibrant local culture.

Baohua Temple: A Leading Place for Cultural and Religious Exchanges

Baohua Temple has earned a reputation as a key destination for Buddhist and cultural exchanges in Yunnan and China. The temple's architecture, which combines Buddhist culture, tourism, and landscaping, is considered a model for contemporary temple construction in the region.

Expanding Role in Yunnan’s Cultural Landscape

Baohua Temple’s influence has grown significantly, and it is now regarded as an essential place for Buddhist and cultural activities during major holidays like the Spring Festival. The temple is also known for its unique vegetarian cuisine and local snacks, offering visitors a taste of the cultural traditions of Old Kunming.

    Tourism and Community Engagement

Each year, during the New Year, thousands of people visit Baohua Temple to burn incense, enjoy the temple's food offerings, and experience traditional cultural performances. As part of the community's cultural heritage, the temple has been revitalizing and promoting these customs, aiming to become a focal point for cultural tourism in the region.

Open to the Public and New Year Celebrations

Baohua Temple continues to host public events such as the New Year Bell Ringing Ceremony and special vegetarian feasts for locals and tourists. These events, which are held with great devotion and grandeur, allow visitors to immerse themselves in the Buddhist culture and celebrate the new year with blessings.

    Cultural and Religious Festivities

During the New Year, Baohua Temple holds a variety of activities, including the ringing of the temple's 108 sacred bells and exhibitions of relics and Buddhist artifacts. These activities, coupled with folk dance, fireworks, and local performances, create a festive and joyous atmosphere, attracting people from all walks of life.

    A Flourishing Buddhist Community

With the continued support of the local government, Baohua Temple’s monastic community and infrastructure have flourished. Its impressive Xumi Lecture Hall and the temple’s commitment to Buddhist teachings have made it a premier venue for cultural and religious exchanges both within Yunnan and across the country.
