Baoshan Mosque in Baoshan City

Baoshan

Baoshan Mosque (保山清真寺) is one of the mosques located in Baoshan City (保山市), Yunnan Province (云南省). It was originally built in the 25th year of the Daoguang reign (1845) during the Qing Dynasty. The current mosque was rebuilt in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign (1892), underwent renovation in 1922, and had a southern courtyard classroom expansion in 1924. The mosque covers a total area of 2.5 mu. The prayer hall, with an area of 175 square meters, is built in traditional Chinese hip-and-gable (xie shan) style.

Historical Development

Early Period

In the 25th year of the Daoguang reign (1845), local Muslim worshippers were subjected to a premeditated massacre by local officials and militia. Only a few hundred survived.

Renovation and Reconstruction

The current mosque was rebuilt in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign (1892), repaired in 1922, and had its southern courtyard classroom expanded in 1924. It occupies a total of 2.5 mu. The prayer hall, built in the traditional Chinese xie shan style, covers 175 square meters.

Architectural Scale

The north and south wing rooms are two-story buildings with a total of 12 rooms. The southern courtyard has buildings on three sides with 15 rooms, and the eastern courtyard has buildings on two sides with 8 rooms. The total construction area exceeds 1,450 square meters. The layout is casual and natural, with minimal ornamentation. During the Cultural Revolution, the mosque was fully occupied and only gradually returned to religious use starting in 1991.

During the Republic of China period, the renowned Ahong (imam) Na Runzhang (纳润章) taught here for 16 years, contributing significantly to religious education. Currently, the mosque serves a Hui (回族) Muslim population of over 1,000 people.
