The river is referred to as Muyin River in its source section. It flows south through Menglian Dai and Lahu Autonomous County (孟连傣族拉祜族佤族自治县, Mènglián Dǎizú Lāhùzú Wǎzú Zìzhìxiàn), changing its name to Nanlei River as it enters the county. The river is fed by the Nataranong River on its right bank and flows through scenic areas before entering Myanmar.
