Jiucheng Mosque in Qiubei County, Wenshan

Jiu Cheng Mosque (旧城清真寺) is located in Jiucheng Village (旧城村), under the Matoushan Village Committee (马头山村民委), Jinping Town (锦屏镇), Qiubei County (丘北县), Yunnan Province (云南省). The mosque was originally built in 1988 and features traditional Chinese timber-and-earth architecture. It covers an area of 800 square meters, with a building area of 260 square meters. Hui (回族) people began settling in this area during the early Qing Dynasty, and the local Muslim community has coexisted peacefully with neighboring religious groups. In 2022, the mosque was recognized as one of Wenshan Prefecture's (文山州) first demonstration religious sites for ethnic unity and progress. The current management body was officially registered in 1997.

Historical Background

Jiu Cheng Mosque was built in 1988. The surrounding Hui (回族) residential area in Jiucheng Village was established during the early Qing Dynasty, when Hui ancestors migrated from Yuxi (玉溪), Honghe (红河), and other areas. On August 20, 1997, the mosque was officially registered as a religious activity venue, and its legal representative body has remained unchanged since then. It was listed in the Directory of Mosques in China – Yunnan section in 2011, and recognized as a prefectural-level ethnic unity demonstration unit in 2022.

Architectural Features

The mosque's main buildings adopt a traditional Chinese timber-and-earth structure and are arranged in a courtyard layout, with a total building area of 260 square meters. The complex includes a prayer hall and a scripture hall. The sloped roofs are tiled, and the doors and windows blend Islamic motifs with local wood carving craftsmanship.

Social Function

Located in a multi-ethnic area, the mosque is only 50 meters from a neighboring Buddhist temple, forming a unique cultural landscape of interfaith harmony. In addition to daily religious activities, the mosque plays a vital role in preserving the Qur’an (《古兰经》) and transmitting Hui cultural heritage. It regularly hosts interethnic and cultural exchange events.

Management Structure

In accordance with regulations on religious affairs, the mosque has an officially registered legal management body, established in 1997 and operating continuously since. The current legal representative, Ma Chaojun (马超俊), remains in office as of 2025. The management is responsible for coordinating daily affairs and recording religious activities.

Location and Transportation

The mosque is situated in Xiaoxiao Section (小小段) of Jiucheng Village (旧城村), Jinping Town (锦屏镇), approximately 7 kilometers from Qiubei County’s urban center. The surrounding area has developed into a religious tourism service zone with direct public transportation access. Within a 1-kilometer radius, facilities such as lodging and dining are available. The site is accessible via county road XH12 and a local village road, with directional signage to religious sites along the way.
