Honghe,Luxi County

Jumo Mosque (巨末清真寺) is located in Baishui Township (白水乡), Shaxi County (沙西县), Yunnan Province. It was originally built in the late Qing Dynasty and has undergone several reconstructions over the years. The mosque suffered serious damage during the Cultural Revolution and was last rebuilt in 1982. Today, it covers a total area of 9 mu.

Historical Development

The ancestors of the Ma family in Jumu originated from Nanjing and came to Yunnan during the early Ming Dynasty following Mu Ying (沐英). They settled in the area, and by the 10th generation, the family had prospered, producing many scholars and military officials. It is believed that a mosque was established here as early as the beginning of the Qing Dynasty.

During the Hui uprising in the Xianfeng and Tongzhi reigns of the Qing Dynasty, the Muslims of Jumu joined forces with Taoyuan (桃园) and other areas to form the “Tao-Ju Three Camps” (桃巨三营) in resistance against the Qing government. The mosque may have been destroyed during this conflict. It was rebuilt in the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty but destroyed again during the Cultural Revolution. The current prayer hall was constructed in 1982.

Architectural Layout

The mosque covers a total area of 9 mu. The main prayer hall has a floor area of 280 square meters. In addition, the mosque complex includes a bunk building, a northern lecture hall, and other supporting facilities.

Community and Religious Life

There are approximately 400 Hui Muslim households in the community, with a total population of around 2,000. Jumu is also the birthplace of Ma Anli (马安礼), a renowned Islamic scholar from the late Qing period.
