Lianhuadong Cave Grottoes in Pingbian County, Honghe

Lianhuadong Cave Grottoes (莲花洞石窟) are located on Lingbao Mountain (灵宝山), approximately 70 kilometers south of Pingbian County (屏边县) in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), at an elevation of 2,100 meters. This region is characterized by its lush forests and towering peaks. The grottoes feature two entrances; the front entrance is now in ruins, while the rear cave measures 3 meters high, 4 meters wide, and 15 meters deep, housing eight intricately carved sculptures.

Sculptural Details

Inside the cave, a striking statue of the Buddha (如来菩萨) stands at 2.3 meters tall, carved into the rock face at the bottom of the cave. Opposite the entrance, the wall features engravings of the Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝) and the Mother of the Yao Pool (瑶池金母), with a statue of the guardian deity Wei Tuo (韦陀) in front, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and delicate detailing. The Buddha and Vajra statues date back to the late Ming Dynasty (明末) and early Qing Dynasty (清初), while the Taoist sculptures were carved during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (光绪) from 1894 to 1906. In 1987, the site was designated as a cultural heritage site by Yunnan Province (云南省文物保护单位).

Geographic and Climatic Features

Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture lies in the southern Yunnan region of the Yungui Plateau (云贵高原), characterized by diverse geological formations, including limestone mountains, plateaus, valleys, plains, and hills. The elevation difference in the region is significant, contributing to its complex terrain. The area receives abundant rainfall, ample sunlight, and has a small annual temperature variation, resulting in a humid climate primarily classified as a subtropical plateau monsoon climate.

Due to the Tropic of Cancer passing through the prefecture, temperatures and humidity levels increase from north to south, displaying characteristics of warmth and humidity. The rainy season primarily occurs from May to October, while late November to the following January and February is the frost period. Therefore, the best times to visit Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture are during the milder months of March to April and September to November, avoiding the rainy and hot summer and autumn.

• By Bus: From Kunming (昆明), take a bus to Pingbian County. The journey typically takes around 6-7 hours.
• Local Transport: Once in Pingbian, you can find local transportation, including taxis or buses, to reach Lingbao Mountain.
