Introduction

Mangjing Village is a Blang ethnic settlement located in the southern part of Huimin Hani Ethnic Township, Lancang County, Yunnan Province. The village is situated in the core area of the famous "Jingmai Thousand-Year Ten-Thousand-Mu Ancient Tea Garden," about 29 kilometers from the township government office and 79 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Menghai County in Xishuangbanna to the east, Nuofu Township to the south and west, and Jingmai Village to the north. The village is divided into six administrative groups: Manghong, Shangzhai, Xiazhai, Wengji, Wengwa, and Nanai, with a total of 639 households and 2,645 people, 2,436 of whom are Blang, making up 92% of the population.

Main Industry and Tea Production

The primary industry of Mangjing Village is tea cultivation, mainly sold within Yunnan Province. In 2011, the total revenue from tea sales was 7 million RMB. The village is actively developing its tea industry, with plans to expand production significantly. Mangjing is part of the Jingmai Ancient Tea Garden, which includes multiple neighboring villages and covers a total area of 28,000 acres.

The ancient tea gardens, cultivated by the Blang and Dai ancestors, feature high-quality, pollution-free tea. The unique "crab's foot" variety found on these ancient tea trees is rare and highly prized. The Jingmai Mangjing Ancient Tea Garden is renowned as the largest and best-preserved ancient tea garden in the world, known as the "Tea Tree Natural Museum" by experts. It is considered the origin of tea cultivation under natural forest conditions and a key site for large-scale tea production. The garden is a major focus in the development of the Pu'er "Green Triangle" tourism circuit and has been named one of the first "Chinese Folk Cultural Heritage Tourism Demonstration Areas." Ongoing development aims to establish Jingmai Mangjing and Huimin Tourism Town as prominent tourist destinations celebrating Pu'er tea's cultural heritage.

Cultural Heritage

Mangjing Village is one of the two administrative villages involved in the "Pu'er Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Forest Cultural Landscape." The village preserves traditional architecture and cultural heritage, reflecting the history and culture of Jingmai Mountain. In 2013, Mangjing Village was included in the second batch of China’s Traditional Villages.

Village Layout

Mangjing Village is situated on a flat slope on the mid-slope of Jingmai Mountain, surrounded by ancient tea trees. The village features well-preserved traditional wooden stilt houses with raised platforms and tiled roofs. Main roads run along the contours of tea hills, dividing the village into eastern and western sections. The village’s layout, with stairs connecting homes and streets arranged in a “fishbone” pattern, reflects its topography. The roofs are decorated in the Blang style, resembling “one bud, two leaves.”

The ancient Blang village of Wengji, with its original architectural style, is a must-visit for an authentic experience of Blang culture. The village's wooden structures, weathered columns, and moss-covered roofs highlight its deep historical roots.
