OVERVIEW｜The Millennium Copper Transport Town ⛏️?

Menggu Ancient Town (蒙姑古镇) is located at the southern tip of Qiaojia County (巧家县), Zhaotong City (昭通市), Yunnan Province. Nestled in the hot dry valley of the Jinsha River (金沙江), it flourished as the first station of copper transport to the capital during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Copper was loaded onto mule caravans here, crossing the Wumeng Mountains (乌蒙山) along the Menggu Slope Copper Transport Ancient Road (蒙姑坡铜运古道), then crossing the Jinsha River into Sichuan, eventually reaching the imperial capital.

Born of copper, prosperous because of copper, and once silenced by copper’s decline, today Menggu shines anew as a fragrant fruit town by the Jinsha River, a sparkling gem along the Baijitan Reservoir High Gorge Lake Tourism Belt.

Menggu Slope Copper Transport Ancient Road (蒙姑坡铜运古道)

A 10 km provincial-level protected site. The “Feiyundong” Tunnel (飞云洞) is a 1 km cliffside tunnel carved into a sheer rock wall — only 1.5 m wide and 2 m high with windows cut into the wall for light, hailed as the “Most Dangerous Plank Road in Wumeng.”

Old Copper Transport Wharf (铜运码头旧址)

Before Baijitan Reservoir filled, this was a natural deep-water port. Now preserved are Qing Dynasty horse-tethering stakes, stone steps, and copper ingot molds.

Menggu Ancient Town Old Street (蒙姑古镇老街)

600 m of bluestone pavement flanked by 24 Ming & Qing wooden corner towers (“horse-turning towers”) — great for staying, dining, and photography.

Fragrant Fruit Orchards (果香田园)

20,000 mu (about 13 sq km) of tropical fruits: mango, satsuma mandarin, pomegranate, and bird’s nest fruit. Harvest season: December to May.

Jinsha River High Gorge Lake (金沙江高峡平湖)

A 200 km² reservoir formed by the dam, ideal for yacht cruises, sailing, and fishing.

Menggu Bridge Sunset (蒙姑大桥日落)

A newly built 1.2 km long cross-river bridge offering stunning golden-hour views where river and sky blend — the best spot to shoot “Golden Menggu.”
