Nangu Pillbox in Yuanyang County, Honghe

The Nangu Blockhouse (南古碉堡), built in the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (光绪二十六年, 1900) of the Qing Dynasty (清朝), is a stone-built military defense structure located on a small hill about 300 meters south of the government offices of Daping Township (大坪乡) in Yuanyang County (元阳县), Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省).

The main structure has a diamond-shaped plan, built with stone blocks (except for the wooden floor), measuring 10.4 meters in length, 6.3 meters in width, and 4.3 meters in height. A 1.1-meter-tall finial decorates the center of the roof.

On the northeast wall is a stone entrance, above which a stone plaque bears the inscription “Xiong Zhen ? Nan” (雄镇?南). Each level of the structure retains two gun ports aimed toward the main road. Surrounding the blockhouse is a protective stone wall 2.4 meters high, 1.2 meters thick, and 110 meters long, forming a complete defensive system. Today, the site is preserved as a local historical and cultural relic and integrated into cultural tourism resources alongside nearby areas such as Dayutang Village (大渔塘村).

Historical Background

The Nangu Blockhouse was constructed in 1900 as a regional military defense facility. Based on its architectural style and surviving inscriptions, it is believed to have been built in connection with late-Qing efforts to strengthen frontier defenses in southern Yunnan. The main structure and surrounding wall are relatively well preserved, and the stone plaque over the entrance remains legible as of 2024.

Architectural Features

The blockhouse features a diamond-shaped floor plan and is entirely constructed from stone blocks, except for its wooden floors. Its dimensions are 10.4 meters in length, 6.3 meters in width, and 4.3 meters in height. A central finial, 1.1 meters high, crowns the roof, combining defensive utility with aesthetic design.

Defensive system includes:

• A single stone entrance in the northeast wall as the only access point.
• Two gun ports on each of the two levels, aimed directly at the main road.
• A surrounding defensive stone wall 2.4 meters high, 1.2 meters thick, and 110 meters in total length, forming a closed defense perimeter.

Location

The blockhouse stands on the hilltop 300 meters directly south of the Daping Township government offices, at approximately 102°50′ E and 23°09′ N. It lies directly north of Dayutang Village, borders Ganiang Township (嘎娘乡) to the south, and is adjacent to the historic Feilong Bridge (飞龙桥) to the west.

Current Status and Protection

The main structure remains intact, with no significant cracks or displacement in the stone walls. The stone plaque inscription above the entrance shows some weathering, but the main characters are still readable. More than 85% of the surrounding wall is preserved, though parts of the northeast section show signs of vegetation erosion.

Since 2016, the Nangu Blockhouse has been included in Yuanyang County’s immovable cultural relics inspection system. A 50-meter-radius construction control zone has been designated around the site, prohibiting any non-conservation-related construction activities.
