The Paozhuzhai Rice Terraces (抛竹寨梯田) are located in the southern part of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山), in Yuanyang County (元阳县), Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). They are an essential part of the greater Yuanyang Terraces (元阳梯田). From the Duoyishu Scenic Area (多依树景区), travel in the direction of Ganiang (嘎娘) for about ten kilometers to reach the Paozhuzhai Terraces. This area is remote and less developed, preserving much of its original natural landscape.
The Paozhuzhai Terraces are the result of over 1,300 years of cultivation by the Hani ethnic group (哈尼族) in the Ailao Mountains. These terraces are a remarkable example of Hani agricultural civilization. The Hani people created a unique ecological system based on the integration of "forest–village–terrace–water system", which has shaped the distinctive terraced landscape.
The Yuanyang region, where Paozhuzhai is located, is home to many ethnic groups, including the Hani (哈尼族) and Yi (彝族). The local culture is rich and colorful. Traditional Hani festivals such as the “October New Year (十月年)” and the “Long Street Banquet (长街宴)” are full of joy and peace. Visitors can experience traditional Hani lifestyles and enjoy local specialties like bamboo rice (竹筒饭) and roast meat (烤肉).
The best time to visit the Paozhuzhai Rice Terraces is from November to April, when the terraces are filled with water. During this period, the reflected light creates shimmering layers, making it ideal for photography. Summer offers lush green waves of rice, while autumn brings golden brilliance—both are also good visiting seasons.
Paozhuzhai and nearby areas offer many local handicrafts and agricultural products, such as Hani embroidery (哈尼族刺绣) and tea leaves (茶叶).
There are a few family inns and homestays (农家乐和民宿) available near Paozhuzhai, though they are relatively basic. Advance booking is recommended. For a more comfortable stay, consider accommodations in Yuanyang County Town or inside scenic areas.
