  • Qudong Old Town (曲硐古镇), located in the southern part of Yongping Basin (永平坝子), is just 5 kilometers from the county seat. Known as a vital historical trading hub, it has been a key stop on the Southwestern Silk Road. The town is not only rich in history and culture but is also blessed with stunning natural landscapes that remain largely untouched. Despite its prominence on the Silk Road, Qudong Old Town is an underexplored eco-tourism destination, offering an authentic glimpse into ancient Yunnan life and customs.

    Geographic and Climatic Features

Qudong Old Town is nestled in the western Yunnan Plateau, benefiting from a subtropical monsoon climate. This means mild winters and warm summers, making it an ideal year-round destination. The town covers an area of 10.66 km², surrounded by lush mountains that enhance its natural beauty. The combination of natural scenery and rich cultural history makes Qudong a hidden gem for visitors seeking tranquility and authenticity in their travels.

    Population and Cultural Identity

With a population of around 8,000 people, Qudong is home to a large Hui Muslim (回族) community, which accounts for more than 7,000 of the residents. It is the largest Hui settlement in western Yunnan, making it a culturally significant place for those interested in Islamic traditions and architecture in China. The town's vibrant Hui culture is most evident in its religious practices, festivals, and architectural styles.Qudong Hui Ethnic Village of Bonan Town in Yongping County, Dali-09

Key Attractions of Qudong Old Town

    Qudong Hui Culture Town (曲硐回族文化城)

In 2005, as part of the Dali Prefecture’s initiative to build a "tourism and cultural hub," the Qudong Hui Culture Town was established. Located just 5 kilometers south of Yongping County, Qudong Village (曲硐村) is an essential stop on the ancient Southwestern Silk Road. With over 7,000 Hui Muslims, it is the largest Hui settlement in western Yunnan. The village is home to several historical and cultural landmarks, including the Qudong Mosque (曲硐清真寺), a provincial-level model mosque and county-level cultural heritage site.

The Qudong Hui Culture Town offers a comprehensive experience of Hui culture, from architecture to culinary traditions. Visitors can explore the area’s vibrant street markets, traditional Hui cuisine, and the welcoming atmosphere of the local Muslim community.

    Qudong Mosque (曲硐清真寺)

The Qudong Mosque, located at the foot of Little Lion Mountain (小狮山), is one of the town's most impressive cultural landmarks. This mosque is an excellent example of Islamic architecture combined with traditional Hui elements, creating a distinctive religious and cultural atmosphere. The mosque features six large marble columns, a pagoda-style arch made from green tiles, and a grand prayer hall surrounded by verdant trees. It’s a place of worship for the local Hui Muslim community and also a major tourist attraction due to its serene beauty and spiritual significance.

The mosque complex includes various facilities such as classrooms, a conference room, and a hexagonal pavilion. The building’s four levels are adorned with intricate details, including green-tiled curved arches and a lovely courtyard. The top floor is home to a pavilion, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding town and valley.

The mosque is especially striking at sunset, when the six marble columns and green arches are bathed in golden light. It creates an atmosphere of peace and spiritual reflection, inviting visitors to contemplate the beauty of both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.Qudong Ancient Town Mosques in Yongping County, Dali

    Qudong Hot Springs (曲硐温泉)

Qudong Hot Springs have been renowned since the Ming Dynasty (明代) for their therapeutic properties. The hot spring area, nestled in the mountains, is an excellent spot for relaxation and wellness. Rich in minerals, the spring water is known to alleviate conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and various skin disorders.

The hot spring complex includes bathhouses, swimming pools, and treatment rooms designed to provide a peaceful experience amidst nature. Over the years, the area has been developed into a wellness destination, with lush greenery and picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. It is a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the natural healing power of the springs.

    Local Legends and Folklore

Qudong Old Town is steeped in local legends that add to its mysterious allure. These stories have been passed down through generations and continue to captivate the imagination of both locals and visitors.

The Legend of the “Qudong Cave” (奇洞的传说)

One of the most famous legends in Qudong is the tale of the “Qudong Cave,” which lies beneath Little Lion Mountain. The story goes that early explorers, driven by curiosity, tried to navigate the cave. However, it became increasingly narrow, and the deeper they went, the more difficult it became to continue. According to the legend, a cat and a dog were sent into the cave to test its depths. The cat ran to the end of the cave but fell off a cliff, while the dog, unable to follow, got trapped in the cave and died.

This mysterious cave is said to have inspired the village’s name. Initially, the name “奇洞” (strange cave) was considered unlucky by locals because of the association with foreign invaders, so the name was changed to “曲硐” (Qudong), which also means “twisted cave.” This legend remains an integral part of the village's history and cultural identity.

    Other Local Legends

Other fascinating local legends include the "Skull Mountain Legend," "Dragon Lifting Earth Legend," and "Loyalty and Filial Piety Festival Legend." These stories, deeply embedded in the local culture, contribute to Qudong’s charm and mystique.

The distant mountains become even more majestic, and the town is bathed in golden light. This breathtaking view is a highlight for many visitors, who gather in the town’s main square to witness the beauty of the setting sun.

    Qudong Mosque and Its Reflections

The Qudong Mosque, with its magnificent columns and intricate arches, is a central point of the town. In the evening, the mosque is illuminated, creating a striking visual spectacle against the twilight sky. The mosque’s reflection in the nearby lake further enhances the serene and peaceful ambiance, making it one of the most photographed spots in Qudong.

    The Rainbow Over Qudong

After rain, Qudong is often graced by a beautiful rainbow, adding to the town’s charm. The rainbow arcs across the sky, providing a vibrant splash of color that contrasts with the traditional architecture and surrounding natural beauty. This enchanting sight creates an ethereal atmosphere, making it an unforgettable experience for visitors.

    The Scenic Bridges and Lakes

The town is also home to scenic bridges that cross over tranquil lakes, with the backdrop of the mountains adding to the peaceful vibe. The sound of water rippling beneath the bridge and the distant chirping of birds provide a calming soundtrack to this beautiful setting. These bridges are not only functional but also serve as picturesque spots where visitors can relax and take in the surroundings.
