Shangbeimen Mosque in Eryuan County, Dali

Shangbeimen Mosque (上北门清真寺) is located on a small hill to the northwest of the town center of Yuhu Town (玉湖镇), Eryuan County (洱源县), Yunnan Province (云南省). It was originally built in the 30th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1904). After nearly a century of wear and tear, the original mosque could no longer meet the needs of the local Muslim community. In 1987, the mosque was rebuilt on a new site, covering an area of 2.3 mu. The original mosque is also under reconstruction, occupying 0.5 mu.

History

The mosque was first built in 1904, during the 30th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, there were only 18 Hui households in the village, totaling just over 50 people. After almost 100 years, the original mosque fell into disrepair and could no longer accommodate the growing population of Muslims. With the collective effort and fundraising by local believers, a new site was selected in June 1987 for reconstruction.

Scale and Structure

The new mosque covers an area of 2.3 mu. Its main prayer hall has a building area of 170 square meters and features a double-eaved, hipped roof style (重檐歇山式). Before the new mosque was completed, the old mosque remained in use. The original mosque covers 0.5 mu, with a prayer hall of 93 square meters in a gabled roof style (悬山式). Two plaques hang in front of the hall, inscribed with "Jiaoben Tangkai" (教本唐开) and "Qingzhen Bu'er" (清真不二). The mosque grounds are planted with flowers and grass, offering a serene and pleasant environment.

Community and Cooperation

The current mosque community includes 76 Hui households with a total population of 417.
