Taoyuan Mosque in Luxi County, Honghe

Honghe,Luxi County

Taoyuan Mosque (桃园清真寺) is located in Taoyuan Village (桃园村), Baishui Township (白水乡), Luxi County (沪西县), Yunnan Province (云南省). The exact date of its original construction is unknown. The mosque suffered severe destruction during the Cultural Revolution (“文革”) but was rebuilt afterward. Currently, it covers an area of 6 mu.

Historical Background

The founding date of Taoyuan Mosque is unrecorded. In the sixth year of the Xianfeng reign (咸丰六年, 1856), the Hui (回族) people of Taoyuan joined Du Wenxiu’s (杜文秀) anti-Qing uprising. Following the failure of the uprising, the mosque was destroyed. In 1914, it was rebuilt and expanded on its original site. During the Cultural Revolution, the mosque again suffered destruction, with many valuable plaques lost. Only one plaque inscribed with “Zhi Xin Xing Cheng” (知信行诚), meaning “Knowledge, Faith, Action, and Sincerity,” remains today. After religious policies were reinstated, the mosque was returned to the Muslim community.

Scale and Structure

The mosque currently covers 6 mu. The prayer hall is built in a single-eave xieshan (歇山) style with a construction area of 180 square meters. An Arabic language school is also established within the mosque.

Community and Outreach

A notable Hui (回族) youth from the village, Ma Sichun (马思纯), studied abroad in Saudi Arabia and has made multiple pilgrimages to Mecca. The local Muslim community consists of 560 households, totaling around 3,000 people, all of Hui ethnicity. The village is in a remote area with limited transportation and underdeveloped economic conditions.
