The bridge is the symbolic heart of the Mosuo people’s “walking marriage” culture, a unique tradition where men do not marry and women remain in their maternal homes. At night, lovers meet in secret; by dawn, the man must leave—hence the bridge’s poetic name.

Reconstruction

The original wooden bridge was lost in a 2013 fire. It was rebuilt as a 300-meter-long steel-wood boardwalk, with red wooden railings, Mosuo symbols, and added viewpoints & blessing pavilions.
