Wase Town in Dali City

Wase Village (挖色村) is an administrative village under Wase Town (挖色镇), Dali City (大理市), located on the east shore of Erhai Lake (洱海), about 0.5 km west of the town government seat and 40 km from Dali urban area. It borders Guangyi Village (光邑村) to the east, Haiyin Village (海印村) to the south, Erhai Lake to the west, and Kanglang Village (康廊村) to the north, with 12 villagers' groups under its jurisdiction. The total land area is approximately 15.26 square kilometers.

The village has an average annual temperature of 15°C and receives about 1100 mm of rainfall yearly. It has 1423 mu of arable land mainly used for rice and scallion cultivation, and 20,441.9 mu of forest land growing economic fruits such as chestnuts. Granite is the primary mineral resource.

Wase Village preserves traditional Bai (白族) ethnic music groups including the "Lianchi Association" (莲池会) and the "Dongjing Drum Band" (洞经鼓乐队), highlighting its rich ethnic cultural heritage.

Economy

In 2006, the village’s total economic income reached 109.45 million yuan, with the tertiary industry accounting for 72.75%. Key industries include pastry processing and scallion cultivation. The village has installed scallion washing and recycling equipment, with scallion planting covering 2197 mu. Plans are underway to build a vegetable wholesale market and village-run processing enterprises.

Infrastructure

By the end of 2006, the village had electricity, paved roads, cable TV, telephone access, and street lighting. Water supply relies mainly on well water, with some households facing water quality issues. The main roads connecting to the town are cemented. The village owns 26 vehicles, 17 tractors, and 55 motorcycles. Irrigated farmland covers 1083 mu, with an irrigation efficiency of 76.11%.

Wase Village has 1030 households and a population of 5125, mainly Bai ethnicity. The agricultural population is 4522, with a labor force of 3274. Rural cooperative medical coverage reached 68.55% in 2006. Healthcare is provided by a village clinic and a nearby town hospital 0.5 km away.

Education and Culture

The village has two primary schools with 18 teachers and 285 students, and is 3 km from the town middle school. Cultural life is enriched by one cultural activity center, one library, and five amateur entertainment troupes.

Governance

The village has 3 Party branches with 122 members, including 91 men and 31 women. The village committee manages 12 villagers' groups. There are also youth organizations with 126 members.

Development Focus

Challenges include weak infrastructure, sanitation, limited tourism facilities, and a fragile village economy. Development plans focus on modernizing agriculture, expanding processing industries (especially pastries and scallions), boosting construction, transportation, tourism, and strengthening collective economy through investment, village enterprises, and local tourism projects like the Chiwendao scenic area.
