The local Mosuo (摩梭人) people refer to it as "Re Shui Tang" (热水塘), meaning "hot water pond." Historically, the water was extremely hot, capable of boiling eggs and scalding pigs. Over time, the temperature stabilized at around 37°C, making it suitable for bathing. The spring contains hydrogen sulfide, which has therapeutic effects for rheumatic arthritis and certain skin conditions.
