Yuyuan Garden in Daguan Park, Kunming

Yuyuan Garden (庾园), also known as the South Garden of Daguan Park (大观公园南园), is one of Kunming’s most atmospheric Republican-era garden sites. Hidden south of the main Daguan Pavilion area, it combines lakeside corridors, stone gateways, garden architecture, mature trees and seasonal displays of wisteria, banksia roses, crabapple blossoms, roses and lotus flowers.

Unlike the busier northern section of Daguan Park, Yuyuan feels quieter and more intimate. Its red-brick buildings, circular gateways, waterside stone boat and flowering pergolas make it particularly suitable for garden walks, historical photography, Hanfu portraits and spring flower viewing.

Visitor Information

Daguan Park, including Yuyuan, has been free to enter since October 2022. Special exhibitions, entertainment facilities or access to the upper level of Daguan Pavilion may follow separate ticket arrangements. Standard published hours are 07:00–19:00, although seasonal evening events can temporarily extend or change access.

History of Yuyuan Garden

Yuyuan was associated with Yu Enxi (庾恩锡), courtesy name Jinhou (晋侯), an influential industrialist, horticulture enthusiast and former mayor of Kunming. He served as mayor from September 1929 to September 1930 and was involved in improving public spaces such as Green Lake, Jinbi Park and Daguan Park. He was also the grandfather of Taiwanese singer Harlem Yu, known in Chinese as Yu Chengqing (庾澄庆).

The garden was developed in the Republican period, with current cultural programs identifying 1927 as its year of completion. Its design combined Chinese garden planning with architectural influences Yu encountered while studying horticulture in Japan. Water, rockwork, courtyards, ornamental plants and lakeside views were integrated into a private retreat beside the Dianchi wetlands.

Visitors should not assume that every building visible today is an untouched Republican-era original. The garden underwent extensive restoration and reconstruction in 1998 in preparation for the Kunming World Horticultural Exposition. Much of its present architectural appearance, including the current Jinhou Building, reflects this restoration period, while older elements such as stonework, trees, garden layouts and selected structures preserve the historical atmosphere.

Main Attractions in Yuyuan Garden

Jinhou Building

Jinhou Building (晋侯楼) is the garden’s most recognizable architectural landmark. Named after Yu Enxi’s courtesy name, it is a two-storey red building beside the water.

The current structure largely reflects the 1998 reconstruction rather than the original family residence. Nevertheless, its red façade, balconies and waterside position make it one of Yuyuan’s most attractive photography locations.

The best angle is from across the water, where the red building, surrounding trees and reflections can be included in the same composition.

Xunfang Shenchu Stone Gateway

The Xunfang Shenchu Gateway (寻芳深处石牌坊) marks one of the garden’s most atmospheric entrances. Its stone frame works particularly well with overhanging wisteria, crabapple branches and traditional clothing.

Rather than photographing the gateway directly from the front, step slightly to one side and use the nearby flowers or trees as a natural frame.

Chongjiu Corridor

The Chongjiu Corridor (重九走廊) is known for its sequence of grey-brick circular openings and moon gates. Looking through several arches creates strong depth and symmetry, making it one of the most popular portrait locations in Yuyuan.

Hanfu, Republican-era clothing and simple light-colored dresses all suit the corridor’s restrained architectural palette. Visit early on a weekday because the narrow arches become crowded during peak flower season.

Stone Boat

The Stone Boat (石舫) stands beside the water and represents the garden tradition of creating architectural “boats” that remain permanently connected to the shore.

Water reflections, nearby blossoms and distant corridors make this a good location for landscape photography. The stone boat and other waterside structures are also incorporated into seasonal cultural and immersive programs held in Yuyuan.

Wisteria and Banksia Rose Pergolas

Yuyuan’s wisteria corridor is its most famous spring landscape. From late March into early April, long purple flower clusters hang from the pergolas like a curtain. Recent spring reports continue to identify Yuyuan as one of Kunming’s signature wisteria-viewing locations.

Yellow banksia roses normally flower around a similar period, covering trellises and walls with small golden blossoms. The exact overlap varies according to spring temperatures, rain and wind.

Avoid pulling the flower clusters closer for photographs or shaking the pergola to create falling petals.

Rose Garden

Yuyuan’s large rose garden has become one of the most important late-spring flower displays in Daguan Park. It covers approximately 12,000 square metres and contains 206 rose varieties, including Chinese, English, French, German and Japanese cultivars.

Climbing roses cover arches and walls, tree-form roses provide height, and ground-cover varieties create broad blocks of color. Roses may flower from April into autumn, but late April and May usually provide the strongest first display.

Taihua Sunset Corridor

The Taihua Sunset Corridor (太华晚照廊) faces the Caohai section of Dianchi Lake. It is one of the best places in the garden to rest and watch the light change across the wetlands.

Late afternoon is particularly attractive when the sun illuminates the water, reeds and distant Western Hills. Seasonal events may occasionally affect access to this corridor, so follow current park signs. A temporary improvement project around the corridor was completed in early 2026.

Seasonal Flower Calendar

Flowering dates are not fixed. Warm weather may bring blossoms forward, while rain and strong wind can shorten the best viewing period.

Recommended Daguan Park and Yuyuan Route

A complete visit should combine the northern and southern gardens:

Daguan Park North Entrance → Jinhuawei Garden (近华浦) → Daguan Pavilion (大观楼) → Lou Wai Lou Area (楼外楼) → Three-Arch Stone Bridge → Yuyuan Garden → South Entrance

Inside Yuyuan, follow:

Xunfang Shenchu Gateway → Chongjiu Corridor → Jinhou Building → Wisteria and Banksia Rose Pergolas → Stone Boat → Rose Garden → Taihua Sunset Corridor

The north and south gardens were once separated by the Daguan River. A 47-metre-long, three-arch stone bridge opened in 2022, allowing visitors to walk directly from the main Daguan Pavilion area to Yuyuan and Luyuan without leaving the park or taking a boat.

Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours for the combined route. A shorter Yuyuan-only visit takes around 90 minutes.

Best Photography Locations

Light-colored clothing, Hanfu and Republican-inspired outfits work well with the garden. White, pale green, beige, light blue and soft pink photograph especially well against the grey brick and red architecture.

How to Get to Yuyuan Garden

By Public Bus

For direct access to the South Garden, routes such as 97, 143 and 166 may stop near the Daguan Park South Garden area. Bus routes can change, so check a live navigation application before departure.

Travelers entering through the main northern section can use routes including 4, 22, 52, 95, 97, 100, 104, 124, 131, 166 and 183 to reach Daguan Park, then walk across the three-arch bridge to Yuyuan.

By Metro

Take Kunming Metro Line 5 to Fuhai Station (福海站), then continue by taxi or ride-hailing car. The final transfer normally takes around 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic.

By Taxi or Private Car

Use “Yuyuan, Daguan Park South Garden” (庾园·大观公园南园) as the navigation destination. This is more accurate than navigating only to Daguan Pavilion when you intend to start from the south.

Parking is available near the park, but spaces fill quickly on spring weekends and public holidays. Public transport or taxi is preferable during peak flower periods.

Yuyuan and Leilou: Two Different Yu Family Sites

Yuyuan should not be confused with Leilou (磊楼) at Baiyukou (白鱼口) on the western shore of Dianchi Lake.

Leilou is a stone-built residence completed in the 1930s as part of Yu Enxi’s Konggu Garden. It stands within the grounds of the Yunnan Workers’ Sanatorium and combines Chinese and Western architectural elements.

Older travel information often states that ordinary visitors cannot access Leilou at all. That is no longer a safe assumption: tourism routes and a direct shuttle service reached the Leilou area in 2026. However, access remains managed by the sanatorium, and entry into the building’s interior should not be assumed without advance confirmation.

Leilou lies more than 30 kilometres from central Kunming and should be treated as a separate half-day Dianchi western-shore excursion rather than an extension of an ordinary Yuyuan visit.

Practical Travel Tips

Visit on a weekday morning during the wisteria and rose seasons. Weekends can become crowded around the corridors and flower arches.

The park is beside the Dianchi wetlands, where wind can be stronger than in central Kunming. Carry a light jacket in March and April.

Sun protection remains important throughout the year. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Wear comfortable flat shoes because the combined north–south route includes bridges, stone paths and extended walking.

Do not climb garden structures, shake flower pergolas or break branches. Keep the narrow moon gates and photography locations clear for other visitors.

Seasonal festivals, night tours, performances and markets are not permanent. Check the latest Daguan Park announcement before planning an evening visit.

Is Yuyuan Garden Worth Visiting?

Yuyuan is highly recommended for travelers interested in historic gardens, spring flowers, architectural photography and quieter alternatives to Kunming’s major tourist attractions.

Its greatest appeal comes from combining the history of a Republican-era private garden with seasonal flowers and direct access to Daguan Pavilion. In late March, visit for wisteria and banksia roses; in late April and May, the rose garden becomes the main attraction; in summer, lakeside lotus flowers and evening light provide a different atmosphere.

For the most complete experience, enter through Daguan Park’s northern section, visit Daguan Pavilion and then cross the three-arch bridge into Yuyuan before leaving through the South Garden entrance.
