Wildlife of Yunnan

Yunnan, located in the far southwest of China, is a province renowned for its incredible biodiversity. 3. Phayre’s Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus phayrei)

   • This critically endangered species is a type of lutung that inhabits the broad-leaved forests of Yunnan and Myanmar. The Phayre's leaf monkey is an arboreal species, spending most of its life in trees. With its distinctive face and long tail, this monkey is one of Yunnan's most unique wildlife attractions.

4. Black Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor)

   • One of the largest squirrels in the world, the black giant squirrel inhabits the dense, tall primary forests. Known for its striking black fur and bright orange or cream-colored underside, this squirrel is solitary and elusive, often found at high altitudes in the canopy of the forest.

5. Flying Squirrels

   • Yunnan is home to several species of flying squirrels that are capable of gliding from tree to tree with the help of their patagium (a furry membrane). These squirrels are perfectly adapted to the forest canopy, where they forage for food and avoid predators.

6. Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus)

   • The Asian elephant, the largest land animal in Asia, can be found in southern Yunnan. Wild elephants are rare in China, and those in Yunnan are critically endangered, often facing threats from human activities such as poaching and habitat destruction.

7. Slow Loris

   • A nocturnal primate found in tropical rainforests, the slow loris is known for its slow movements and large, round eyes. It is a first-class national protected species in China and is primarily found in the forests of southern Yunnan and southern Guangxi.

Yunnan's diverse ecosystems and varying elevations make it an excellent destination for wildlife watching, particularly for birding. The best time to observe wildlife is during the northern winter, from December to January, when many migratory species arrive in the province. Late April to early May is ideal for observing forest species.
