Nujiang-Salween River System

The Salween River, also known as the Nujiang River (怒江), is one of Southeast Asia's most significant rivers, flowing through China, Myanmar (Burma), and Thailand. Originating from the Tanggula Mountains in Tibet, it travels over 3,200 kilometers, passing through the Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage Site in Yunnan, China, before emptying into the Andaman Sea in Myanmar. The Salween is not only an essential water source for the millions of people living in its watershed but also a major feature of the region's ecology and culture.

Overview of the Salween River

The Salween River flows southward from Tibet, passing through Yunnan Province in China and into Myanmar and Thailand. It eventually discharges into the Gulf of Martaban in Myanmar. The river forms part of the boundary between Myanmar and Thailand over a stretch of approximately 130 kilometers.

The upper reaches of the Salween are wild and picturesque, flowing through deep gorges and cutting across the Shan Plateau of Myanmar. Its navigability is limited due to treacherous rapids, but it remains crucial for the log transport industry in Myanmar, where teak logs are floated downstream. Hydroelectric power projects are also planned or under construction along the river, particularly in the Pilu River (a tributary of the Salween) and at Salween Rapids, which offer potential for power generation and irrigation.

The lower course of the river is navigable for small vessels, though only for a short distance (less than 160 kilometers). The river plays an important role in the livelihoods of 6 million people in its watershed, who depend on it for food, agriculture, and trade.
