Yao'an County (姚安县) lies in the central highlands of Yunnan and has a distinctly varied landscape of broad mountain basins, hills, high mountains, forests, and river valleys. The county stretches from about 1,515 meters at the Yupa River (渔泡江) valley to 2,897 meters at Sanfeng Mountain (三峰山), while the county seat in Dongchuan Town (栋川镇) stands at about 1,876 meters.
