Yaoan County Transportation

Yao’an County (姚安县) is located in the northwestern part of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. With Kunming–Chuxiong–Dali Expressway expansion, Chuxiong–Yao’an–Dayao–Yongren Expressway, and Yao’an–Nanhua Expressway now forming the county’s main expressway network, Yao’an has become considerably easier to reach from Kunming, Chuxiong, Dali, Nanhua and northern Yunnan. For international visitors, however, getting to Yao’an is only the first part of the transportation question. Yao’an County Transportation Overview

Yao’an covers approximately 1,803 square kilometers and has a mixed landscape of the central Yao’an Basin and surrounding mountains. The county currently administers six towns—Dongchuan (栋川镇), Guanglu (光禄镇), Qianchang (前场镇), Mixin (弥兴镇), Taiping (太平镇) and Guantun (官屯镇)—and three townships—Dahekou (大河口乡), Shizhong (适中乡) and Zuomen (左门乡).

The central basin around Dongchuan and Guanglu has comparatively flat terrain and a dense road network. Yao’an’s road network has expanded rapidly in recent years. The county’s current transportation strategy is based on a combination of expressways, upgraded national and provincial roads, county roads and rural roads, with further improvements planned for G227, S220 and roads connecting mountain communities. The county reported 1,733.02 kilometers of roads at the end of 2025, including village roads, illustrating the importance of road transport to everyday travel and tourism.

For visitors, transportation can therefore be divided into four practical zones: the county seat and central basin, Guanglu and nearby cultural attractions, ordinary townships and villages, and remote highland Yi communities. The first two are relatively easy to explore independently; the latter two are better suited to private cars, chartered vehicles or carefully planned motorcycle trips.

How to Get to Yao’an County

By Air

Yao’an does not have a commercial passenger airport. International travelers will normally fly to Kunming Changshui International Airport (昆明长水国际机场) and continue to Yao’an by high-speed rail plus road transfer, intercity bus, or private vehicle.

Another practical option is to fly to Kunming and travel by train to Nanhua Railway Station (南华站) or Chuxiong Railway Station (楚雄站) before continuing by road. For travelers arriving from other parts of China, this combination is generally more convenient than attempting to reach Yao’an entirely by long-distance bus.

By Train

One important distinction should be made when researching Yao’an railway transportation.

The Guangtong–Dali Railway passes through Yao’an County, including the area around Mixin Town, and Yao’an Railway Station (姚安站) is located in Xiaojü Village (小苴村). However, Yao’an Railway Station is currently a non-passenger station and does not provide ordinary passenger services. It should therefore not be used as the destination when booking a normal passenger train ticket.

For travelers arriving by high-speed or passenger train, Nanhua Railway Station is one of the most useful railway transfer points for Yao’an and Guanglu Ancient Town. Yao’an’s tourism information also identifies Nanhua as the nearest railway transportation hub for Guanglu, with onward road connections into the county.

Chuxiong Railway Station (楚雄站) is another useful option, particularly for visitors arriving from Kunming, Dali and other cities along the Kunming–Chuxiong–Dali railway corridor. From Chuxiong, travelers can continue to Yao’an by road.

For international visitors, the most practical railway itinerary is therefore:

By Long-Distance Bus

Long-distance buses remain useful for travelers who prefer direct road transportation. Yao’an is connected by road with Kunming, Chuxiong, Nanhua, Dayao, Dali and other destinations in central and western Yunnan.

The exact departure times and fares should be confirmed before departure rather than relying on older printed timetables. This is particularly important because county-level passenger services may be adjusted according to demand and seasonal operations.

Chuxiong is one of the most useful road-transfer points. Chuxiong Passenger Transport Station operates numerous intercity routes throughout Yunnan, making it a practical connection point for travelers arriving from other destinations before continuing toward Yao’an.

For visitors traveling from Kunming, direct buses may be available depending on the operating schedule. However, Kunming → Nanhua/Chuxiong → Yao’an can offer greater flexibility when direct services do not match the traveler's schedule.

By Car

For independent travelers, driving is one of the easiest ways to reach Yao’an.

Yao’an is served by the Kunming–Chuxiong–Dali Expressway expansion, Chuxiong–Yao’an–Dayao–Yongren Expressway and Yao’an–Nanhua Expressway, together with G227, S220 and other county and rural roads. The county government identifies these expressways as the backbone of Yao’an’s modern transportation network.

From Kunming, the road journey to Yao’an is roughly in the range of 230 km, although the actual driving distance and time depend on the selected expressway interchange and destination within the county.

From Chuxiong, Yao’an is particularly convenient to reach by expressway. From Dali and Nanhua, road connections are also straightforward.

For travelers visiting several villages in one day, driving has a major advantage: public transportation becomes less frequent as you move away from the county seat, while a private vehicle allows you to combine multiple cultural and scenic sites without having to wait for connecting buses.

Getting Around Dongchuan Town

Dongchuan Town (栋川镇) is the administrative and transportation center of Yao’an County. Most basic services, accommodation, restaurants, shops and transportation facilities are concentrated here.

Within the county seat, travelers can generally walk between nearby attractions or use local taxis and other short-distance transportation. The central urban area is also the most suitable part of Yao’an for casual cycling.

For visitors staying in Dongchuan, it is usually unnecessary to rent a car simply for moving around the town. A vehicle becomes more valuable when traveling to Guanglu, Guantun, Qianchang, Shizhong, Zuomen and remote villages.

Local Bus and Rural Passenger Transport

Public transportation connects Dongchuan with the county's major towns, but service frequency decreases as the distance from the county seat increases.

The route to Guanglu Ancient Town is among the easiest tourist connections. Guanglu is close to the county seat and has mature tourism infrastructure, including parking, accommodation and restaurants. Getting to Guanglu Ancient Town

Guanglu Ancient Town (光禄古镇) is the easiest major tourist destination to visit independently from Yao’an County.

The ancient town is located close to the county seat and is connected by road and local public transportation. It is also one of the most developed tourism areas in Yao’an, with parking, restaurants and accommodation facilities. Yao’an tourism authorities recommend road access from Kunming and Chuxiong and identify Nanhua as an important railway transfer hub.

The ancient town area can be combined with Longhua Temple (龙华寺), Yao’an Route Military and Civilian Governor’s Office (姚安路军民总管府) and Xiguan Village (西关村).

For visitors staying in Dongchuan, cycling or taking a local bus to Guanglu can be a pleasant half-day or full-day experience, while driving is preferable when the itinerary also includes Baiguoyuan or other surrounding rural attractions.

Transportation to Mayou Village and Meige Cultural Sites

Mayou Village (马游村) in Guantun Town is one of the most important destinations for travelers interested in the Meige (梅葛) epic tradition and Yi culture.

The village can be reached by road from Dongchuan, but visitors should distinguish between reaching Guantun Town and reaching the individual village or cultural venue. Rural passenger services do not necessarily provide a direct tourist connection to every cultural site.

Transportation to Shizhong Township

Shizhong Township (适中乡) is considerably more mountainous than the central basin. Although road conditions have improved, the journey involves mountain terrain and should not be treated like a normal urban sightseeing route.

Self-driving is the most flexible transportation option for exploring Yao’an County.

The central basin provides easy driving conditions, while the expressway network makes it possible to reach Yao’an efficiently from neighboring cities. Once inside the county, travelers can use national, provincial, county and rural roads to connect tourist attractions and villages.

A good introductory driving itinerary is:

Dongchuan → De Feng Temple → Guanglu Ancient Town → Longhua Temple → Xiguan Village → Yao’an Baiguoyuan → Dongchuan

This route focuses on the central basin and can be completed comfortably without spending a large amount of time on mountain roads.

A more ambitious cultural itinerary can extend toward:

Dongchuan → Guantun → Mayou Village → Qianchang → Shizhong → Zuomen

This should be treated as a two-day cultural road trip rather than a rushed one-day sightseeing route, particularly if the itinerary includes village visits, interviews or cultural activities.

Self-Driving Safety Tips

Central Yao’an is generally straightforward for driving, but mountain travel requires more attention.

Before leaving the county seat, fill the fuel tank if the itinerary involves remote mountain areas. Check the weather forecast during the rainy season and avoid driving mountain roads during periods of intense rainfall.

Mountain roads may contain sharp curves, steep sections and limited shoulders. Drivers should reduce speed before curves rather than braking sharply inside them.

Night driving in remote mountain villages is best avoided, particularly for travelers unfamiliar with the road.

Parking is generally easier around developed tourist attractions such as Guanglu Ancient Town, while parking can be limited in small traditional villages.

Bicycle Touring in Yao’an

Yao’an is a good destination for short-distance recreational cycling, especially around the central basin.

The most suitable cycling area is the relatively flat countryside between Dongchuan and Guanglu. Agricultural landscapes, villages and the surrounding mountains provide a pleasant backdrop, while the distance is manageable for a half-day or full-day outing.

Bicycle Safety

Wear a helmet and high-visibility clothing when riding outside the urban area.

Avoid night riding on rural roads. Carry sufficient drinking water, sunscreen and basic repair equipment.

High-altitude sunshine can be strong even when temperatures feel comfortable. During summer, start early and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Cyclists should also remember that a route that looks short on a map may become considerably more demanding once mountain gradients are taken into account.

For ordinary tourists, Dongchuan–Guanglu and nearby basin roads are the preferred cycling area, while Shizhong and Zuomen should generally be left to experienced road cyclists.

Motorcycle Touring in Yao’an

The Dongchuan–Guanglu route is suitable for an easy introductory motorcycle ride. Experienced riders can also consider routes toward Guantun and Mayou Village, provided weather and road conditions are favorable.

Always wear a certified helmet, maintain a safe speed and use extra caution around blind corners. Rain can make mountain pavement slippery, and agricultural vehicles may appear suddenly on narrow rural roads.

Nighttime motorcycle trips into remote mountain villages are not recommended.

Recommended Transportation by Type of Trip

For a first visit to Yao’an, staying in Dongchuan and using local transport or taxis for Guanglu Ancient Town is sufficient.

For a Guanglu Ancient Town cultural trip, public transport, taxi, bicycle or private car can all work well.

For a family trip, a private car or chartered vehicle is more comfortable, particularly when combining several attractions.

For an ethnic-culture research trip, a chartered vehicle with a local driver is the most practical option because villages and cultural sites may be separated from township bus stations.

For a Meige cultural itinerary, private transportation is strongly recommended for Mayou Village and surrounding cultural sites.

For a mountain village photography trip, use a private car and allow additional time for road conditions and changing weather.

For a cycling holiday, concentrate on Dongchuan, Guanglu and the central basin.

For a motorcycle road trip, the basin and experienced-rider mountain routes can be combined, but remote mountain roads should not be approached as ordinary tourist highways.

Yao’an Transportation for International and Study-Tour Groups

For international visitors, the biggest transportation challenge in Yao’an is not reaching the county itself but reaching the final village destination.

The expressway network has greatly improved access to the county, and the county's rural road system has also expanded. In 2023, all 77 established villages were reported to have rural logistics service coverage, while the county has continued developing an integrated rural passenger and logistics system.

Nevertheless, a public bus that reaches a township does not necessarily mean that every surrounding village can be reached conveniently by public transportation.

At the same time, visitors should not confuse good county-level road access with frequent public transportation to every village. Remote cultural destinations still require additional planning.

There is also no need for a border permit simply to travel within Yao’an County. Yao’an is an inland county rather than a border tourism destination.

During the rainy season, travelers should allow additional time for mountain routes and monitor local weather and road conditions.

Best Way to Travel Around Yao’an County
