Yuanmou County(元谋县) in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, is one of southwestern China's most distinctive destinations for travelers interested in ancient human history, geology, ethnic culture and rural landscapes. Located in the dry-hot valley of the Jinsha River, Yuanmou is widely known as the “Hometown of Oriental Humans” because of its exceptional paleoanthropological heritage.
The county combines several tourism themes rarely found together in one destination: ancient human archaeology, spectacular earth-forest landscapes, Jinsha River scenery, Red Army Long March heritage, Yi and Lisu ethnic culture, and dry-hot-valley agriculture. These resources make Yuanmou particularly attractive to international visitors looking for destinations beyond China's better-known historic cities and mountain resorts.
Yuanmou has two major 4A-rated scenic areas, together with museums, archaeological sites, cultural heritage locations, rural tourism areas and ecological attractions. The sites are spread across the county's different towns and townships rather than concentrated in one tourist center. Yuanma Town(元马镇), the county seat, functions as the main accommodation and transportation base for exploring the wider area.
For international visitors, the strongest attractions are those with distinctive global or educational value: the Wumao Earth-Forest Scenic Area, Langbapu Earth-Forest, Yuanmou Man Museum, Yuanmou Man National Archaeological Site Park, and the Longjie Ferry Red-tourism Area. Together, they form a tourism route combining geology, human evolution, archaeology, history and landscape photography.
Why Yuanmou Is Special for International Travelers
Yuanmou stands out because its tourism resources tell a story stretching from prehistoric human evolution to modern Chinese history and contemporary rural life.
The county is especially important for paleoanthropology and archaeological study. The Yuanmou Man discoveries provide an important window into early human activity in East Asia, while the archaeological sites around the county allow visitors to connect museum displays with the actual landscapes in which archaeological discoveries were made.
The second major attraction is the earth-forest landscape. Towering formations shaped by erosion create a dramatic landscape of cliffs, pillars, ridges and valleys. The combination of unusual geological forms and the strong sunlight of the dry-hot valley makes Yuanmou particularly appealing to landscape photographers.
The Jinsha River adds another dimension. Reservoir landscapes, red-rock valleys and historic river crossings connect natural scenery with the history of the Long March and the development of western Yunnan. Ethnic villages and agricultural areas then provide a closer look at contemporary rural communities.
This combination makes Yuanmou suitable for geology study tours, archaeology programs, anthropology fieldwork, photography trips, Red tourism, ethnic-cultural research and agricultural education tours.
Yuanmou's Most Popular Attractions for Foreign Visitors
1. Wumao Earth-Forest Scenic Area
Wumao Earth-Forest Scenic Area(物茂土林景区) is the most recognizable geological attraction in Yuanmou and one of the county's strongest draws for international visitors. The landscape consists of dense formations of eroded earth and rock that resemble castles, towers, walls and natural sculptures.
The unusual geological appearance makes Wumao particularly suitable for geology education, landscape photography and outdoor exploration. Its developed visitor facilities also make it easier for first-time international travelers to experience an earth-forest landscape without undertaking a demanding expedition.
2. Langbapu Earth-Forest
Langbapu Earth-Forest(浪巴铺土林), also known as Xinhua Earth-Forest, is another major geological attraction and a 4A-rated scenic area. Its tall and densely distributed earth pillars create a powerful visual effect, especially when morning or late-afternoon light emphasizes the textures and shadows of the formations.
Compared with a conventional sightseeing park, Langbapu is particularly attractive to photographers and travelers interested in unusual geological landscapes.
3. Yuanmou Man Museum
Yuanmou Man Museum(元谋人博物馆) is the principal museum for understanding Yuanmou's paleoanthropological heritage. Exhibitions introduce the archaeological discoveries, fossil evidence and reconstruction of early humans associated with the region.
For international visitors, the museum is an important introduction before visiting the archaeological sites themselves. It is especially suitable for human-evolution study tours, archaeology programs, anthropology groups and educational travel.
4. Yuanmou Man National Archaeological Site Park
Yuanmou Man National Archaeological Site Park(元谋人国家考古遗址公园) is located in Laocheng Township and is associated with the archaeological area where Yuanmou Man fossil evidence was discovered.
The site provides a direct connection between the museum's scientific interpretation and the physical landscape of the archaeological discoveries. It is one of the most important places in Yuanmou for visitors studying early human history and archaeology.
5. Longjie Ferry Red-tourism Area and Jinsha River
Longjie Ferry Red-tourism Area and Red Army Long March Memorial Hall(龙街渡红色景区及红军长征元谋纪念馆) combines revolutionary history with the dramatic landscape of the Jinsha River.
The Longjie Ferry area is associated with the Red Army's crossing operations during the Long March. Today, the surrounding Jinsha River reservoir landscape provides a very different visual experience from the earth forests, with broad water surfaces, steep valleys and mountain scenery.
For international educational groups, this area is particularly suitable for combining modern Chinese history, military history, geography and landscape studies.
6. Yuanmou Man World Park
Yuanmou Man World Park(元谋人世界公园) combines an ancient-human theme with hot-spring leisure and resort facilities. It provides a more relaxed tourism experience after archaeological or geological sightseeing and can be incorporated into longer family, educational or wellness itineraries.
7. Phoenix Lake Scenic Area
Phoenix Lake Scenic Area(凤凰湖景区) is an urban ecological attraction close to the county center. The lake and surrounding public spaces provide an easy place for walking, relaxation and sunset viewing.
Its location near the main urban area makes it particularly convenient for visitors staying in Yuanma Town.
8. Dadunzi Neolithic Site
Dadunzi Neolithic Site(大墩子新石器时代遗址) provides a later chapter in Yuanmou's prehistoric story. The archaeological site is associated with prehistoric settlement and is valuable for visitors interested in the development of human communities after the earliest periods represented by Yuanmou Man.
It is best suited to specialist cultural tours and archaeological study programs rather than conventional sightseeing.
9. Xiaoliangshan Yi Villages
Xiaoliangshan Yi Ethnic Villages(小凉山彝族村寨) provide opportunities to experience Yi community life, traditional customs, festivals, music and oral traditions.
For visitors interested in anthropology and ethnic culture, village visits can complement Yuanmou's archaeological attractions by showing how living communities continue to maintain distinctive cultural traditions in the modern era.
10. Pingtian Agricultural Landscapes
Pingtian(平田乡) and other agricultural areas provide a different side of Yuanmou tourism. The dry-hot valley climate supports distinctive fruit and vegetable production, creating opportunities for agricultural sightseeing, fruit picking and rural study programs.
These experiences are particularly suitable for family travel, agricultural education and rural tourism.

Yuanmou County Attractions by Tourism Category
Yuanmou's attractions can be divided into five major tourism categories. This classification is useful when designing different types of international itineraries.
Ancient Human History and Prehistoric Archaeology
The Yuanmou Man Museum, Yuanmou Man National Archaeological Site Park and Dadunzi Neolithic Site form the county's core prehistoric heritage route.
Together, they allow visitors to study different stages of human history, from early human remains to later prehistoric settlements. This category is particularly suitable for university groups, archaeology students, anthropology researchers and educational tours.
Geological Landscapes and Earth Forests
The Wumao Earth-Forest Scenic Area, Langbapu Earth-Forest and the less-developed Banguo Earth-Forest(班果土林) represent Yuanmou's most distinctive geological landscapes.
Wumao and Langbapu are the best choices for general visitors because of their established tourism facilities. Banguo is more suitable for experienced travelers and specialist photographers because of its relatively undeveloped environment.
Jinsha River, Red Tourism and Historical Landscapes
The Longjie Ferry Red-tourism Area, Red Army Long March Memorial Hall, Jinsha Lake and Xiaopingdi Riverside Viewpoint(小平地江岸) combine history and natural scenery.
This route is particularly valuable for visitors studying the Long March, modern Chinese history, river geography or the transformation of the Jinsha River landscape.
Ethnic Culture and Intangible Heritage
The Xiaoliangshan Yi Ethnic Villages, Yangjie Red-Yi Village(羊街红彝族村寨), Lisu villages in Jiayi Township and the Yuanmou Huadeng Heritage Center(元谋花灯传习所) provide opportunities to explore living ethnic traditions.
Rather than simply presenting ethnic culture as a stage performance, village-based tourism can introduce visitors to traditional clothing, music, dance, oral traditions, festivals, handicrafts and everyday community life.
Wellness, Urban Leisure and Rural Agriculture
The Yuanmou Man World Park, Phoenix Lake Scenic Area, fruit-picking areas around Pingtian and agricultural landscapes around Huangguayuan Town form a more relaxed tourism category.
These attractions work well as supporting stops within longer itineraries, especially for families, wellness travelers and educational groups that want to balance intensive archaeological or geological activities with leisure.

How to Plan a Yuanmou Tourism Route
Because attractions are spread across different townships, Yuanmou is not a destination where visitors can comfortably rely on one central walking area. Yuanma Town is the most practical accommodation and transportation base, while private cars or chartered vehicles are recommended for visiting attractions farther from the county center.
A first-time international visitor can begin with the Yuanmou Man Museum to understand the region's prehistoric history before traveling to the Yuanmou Man National Archaeological Site Park. The itinerary can then continue to one of the two major earth forests for a completely different geological experience.
A longer route can add the Longjie Ferry and Jinsha River landscapes for a historical and geographical perspective. Visitors interested in ethnic culture can continue toward Liangshan Township, Yangjie Town or Lisu communities, while agricultural areas around Pingtian and Huangguayuan can be incorporated into rural or educational programs.
For photography groups, the earth forests are the priority. For archaeology and anthropology groups, the museum and archaeological park should form the foundation of the itinerary. For family groups, geological sightseeing can be combined with Phoenix Lake, hot springs and agricultural activities.
