  • Shiping County Climate

The climate of Shiping County (石屏县) combines bright plateau sunshine with the gentler atmosphere of a lakeside town. Its low-latitude location and mountainous terrain create mild annual temperatures, distinct wet and dry seasons, and considerable differences between warm valleys, the central basin and cooler highlands.

Shiping is often described as a place with no severe winter and no excessively hot summer. The annual temperature range is relatively small, but the difference between daytime and nighttime can be noticeable. These conditions make the county suitable for sightseeing, cultural travel and longer stays throughout the year.

    How Geography Shapes Shiping’s Climate

Shiping is a predominantly mountainous county. Approximately 94% of its territory consists of mountains and hills, giving rise to the local description: “more than nine parts mountain and less than one part basin.”

The terrain is generally higher in the north, steeper in the south and relatively open around the central basin. Elevations range from approximately 259 metres in the lowest valleys to more than 2,550 metres in the highest mountains. This enormous vertical difference produces several climate zones extending from tropical valley conditions to cool, temperate uplands.

Central Shiping Basin and Yilong Lake

Shiping Ancient Town (石屏古城) and Yilong Lake (异龙湖) lie in the county’s main basin. This is the most representative climate zone for travellers: mild winters, warm but not excessively hot summers, abundant sunshine and a pronounced rainy season.

The lake moderates temperatures in nearby areas and increases local humidity. Mornings can be misty during the rainy season, while lakeside winds may make evenings feel cooler than the recorded air temperature.

    Warm Southern Valleys

The county’s lowest river valleys have warmer tropical or subtropical conditions. Summer heat is stronger, winters are milder and the growing season is longer than in the central basin.

Travellers descending from Shiping Ancient Town into low-altitude areas should expect higher temperatures and stronger humidity, particularly between May and September.

    Northern and High-Altitude Mountain Areas

Elevated areas are significantly cooler than the county seat. Summer provides pleasant conditions for rural and ecological travel, but winter mornings can be cold and frost is possible.

Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Fog, low clouds and rain may develop even when conditions around Yilong Lake remain clear.

    Rainy and Dry Seasons

Shiping has a subtropical plateau monsoon climate with two clearly defined seasonal periods.

The rainy season extends from May to October, when warm and moist monsoon air brings most of the county’s annual precipitation. July and August are normally the wettest months. Rain often falls in the afternoon or evening, although longer periods of wet weather occasionally occur.

The dry season lasts from November to April. Sunshine is abundant, humidity is lower and rainfall is limited. These months offer stable conditions for ancient-town walks, cycling and rural excursions, although vegetation can appear drier and early mornings may feel cold.

Shiping’s annual average temperature is approximately 18°C. Average annual precipitation generally ranges from around 800 to 1,100 millimetres according to elevation and observation period. The county also receives more than 2,000 hours of sunshine in many years.

Shiping County Monthly Temperature and Climate Table

The figures below represent approximate long-term conditions in the county seat and Yilong Lake basin. High-altitude areas may be 5–8°C colder, while low river valleys can be several degrees warmer.

Best Time to Visit Shiping County

March to May: Spring Flowers and Lakeside Scenery

Spring is one of the most attractive periods in Shiping. Temperatures are warm without being oppressive, skies are often clear and the vegetation around Yilong Lake becomes increasingly colourful.

From mid-April into May, the shoreline is known for displays of shenhung bean flowers, Shiping’s representative county flower. The flowering period varies with annual weather, so visitors travelling specifically for the blossoms should confirm local conditions before departure.

Spring is particularly suitable for ancient-town walks, village photography, lakeside cycling and outdoor dining.

June to August: Cool Summer and Rainy Landscapes

Although summer is the rainy season, average temperatures in the central basin generally remain below the levels experienced in many lowland Chinese cities. This makes Shiping a popular summer-retreat destination.

Rice fields, lotus ponds and surrounding hills are at their greenest. Rain and low cloud can create atmospheric views across Yilong Lake, but cycling and mountain driving require additional caution.

July and August receive the heaviest rainfall. Visitors should keep schedules flexible and avoid exposed lakefront areas during thunderstorms.

September to November: Best for Cycling and Photography

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Shiping. Rain decreases, humidity becomes more comfortable and visibility improves around Yilong Lake.

From September to November, the lakeside cycling route offers clear views of wetlands, villages, fields and distant mountains. The harvest season also brings local produce, seasonal dishes and lively rural markets.

October and November are especially suitable for self-driving, walking tours and heritage photography.

December to February: Winter Sunshine and Slow Travel

Winter in Shiping is usually dry and sunny. Daytime conditions in the basin can be mild, while mornings and evenings remain cool. This is an appealing period for visitors seeking winter sunshine and a slower pace of travel.

Yilong Lake attracts wintering birds, while Shiping Ancient Town is comfortable for exploring markets, traditional houses and tofu workshops. Mountain areas are much colder than the county seat, so warm clothing remains necessary.

What to Wear in Shiping Throughout the Year

    Spring Clothing

From March to May, wear long-sleeved shirts, light trousers or dresses during the day. Carry a thin jacket for mornings and evenings. By late April, breathable clothing and sun protection become increasingly important.

    Summer Clothing

From June to August, lightweight and quick-drying clothing is most comfortable. A raincoat or umbrella should be carried every day, while waterproof or non-slip shoes are useful around wetlands, rural paths and stone streets.

A light windproof jacket is helpful beside Yilong Lake and in higher mountain villages.

    Autumn Clothing

September can still feel warm, but temperatures fall progressively through October and November. Long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters and windproof jackets are suitable.

Layered clothing works best for travellers combining sunny daytime cycling with cooler evening walks.

    Winter Clothing

From December to February, central Shiping usually requires a sweater, jacket or light down coat in the morning and evening. Midday sunshine may feel warm enough for lighter clothing.

Visitors travelling to Longpeng, Longwu, Shaochong or other mountain areas should bring a thicker coat, warm trousers and wind-resistant outerwear.

    Essential Items for Every Season

Highland ultraviolet radiation remains strong even in winter. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are recommended throughout the year.

    Useful items include:

    • A compact raincoat or umbrella during the wet season.
    • Comfortable walking shoes for ancient-town stone streets.
    • Non-slip footwear for lakeside wetlands and rural trails.
    • A light windbreaker for cycling around Yilong Lake.
    • Insect repellent during warm and rainy months.
    • An extra warm layer for mountain villages.

    Seasonal Travel Routes

Spring Ancient Town and Flower Route

Shiping Ancient Town → Yilong Lake → Baoxiu Town

This route combines historical architecture, lakeside blossoms and rural heritage. Begin in the ancient town, continue to the flowering areas beside Yilong Lake and finish with traditional settlements around Baoxiu.

March to May offers comfortable walking temperatures, although midday sunshine can be strong.

    Summer Lake and Mountain Route

Shiping Ancient Town → Yilong Lake Wetlands → Longpeng Town

Spend the morning exploring the ancient town, visit the wetlands before afternoon showers develop and continue to the cooler mountain environment around Longpeng.

Check the forecast before entering mountain roads, particularly during prolonged rain.

    Autumn Cycling and Harvest Route

Shiping Ancient Town → Yilong Lake Cycling Route → Rural Villages → Local Food Market

Autumn provides the best balance of clear skies, comfortable temperatures and stable road conditions. The route is suitable for cycling, photography and seasonal food experiences.

    Winter Sunshine and Cultural Route

Shiping Ancient Town → Confucian Temple → Traditional Residences → Yilong Lake Birdwatching

Winter is ideal for slow travel. Begin with cultural sites in the ancient town, sample Shiping tofu and spend the afternoon beside the lake watching migratory birds in the warm sunshine.

    Cycling Around Yilong Lake

The Yilong Lake area is one of Shiping’s best cycling destinations. The landscape combines wetlands, farmland, villages and broad views across the water.

September to November offers the most reliable cycling conditions, while winter is also suitable during the warmer part of the day. Spring brings flowers and greener scenery, but wind can occasionally be strong.

Summer cyclists should avoid riding during thunderstorms or immediately after heavy rain. Some lakeside sections may be wet, muddy or temporarily restricted for ecological protection.

Wear a helmet, carry water and use front and rear lights. Ride only on permitted roads and respect wetland conservation zones.

    Rainy-Season Travel Advice

Heavy summer rain can affect mountain roads, rural paths and wetland areas. Before departure, check local forecasts and road conditions, particularly when visiting Longpeng, Longwu, Shaochong or remote villages.

Avoid steep slopes, river channels and low-lying lakeside sections during storms. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, even if local traffic appears to be moving.

Rain often occurs later in the day, so outdoor activities are best arranged for the morning, with ancient-town cafés, museums and food experiences reserved for wetter periods.
