  • Shiping County Ethnic Culture

Shiping County (石屏县) is a historic town in southern Yunnan where classical Chinese scholarship, Ming and Qing architecture, Yi ethnic traditions, ancient villages, and century-old railway heritage coexist. Known as a “Land of Literature” and a “Hometown of Indigenous Song and Dance,” Shiping preserves the scholarly legacy of its old town alongside the living culture of the Huayao branch of the Yi people.

The county’s cultural identity is rooted in interaction between Han settlers and indigenous ethnic communities. Confucian academies, ancestral halls, military settlements, Yi songs, traditional dances, embroidery, metalwork, and village festivals together form one of the richest cultural landscapes in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州).

Historical and Cultural Overview of Shiping County

Shiping’s cultural character can be described as a combination of scholarly tradition, military-settlement history, and ethnic interaction.

Shiping as a Land of Literature

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Shiping produced approximately 640 successful candidates in the provincial imperial examinations, 77 jinshi scholars, and 15 members of the Hanlin Academy. Its most celebrated scholar was Yuan Jiagu (袁嘉谷), the only top-ranked candidate in Yunnan’s special imperial examination in economics.

This scholarly achievement earned Shiping a reputation expressed in the traditional saying: “An unrivaled landscape east of the mountains and the foremost literary prefecture of southern Yunnan.”

The old town contains 29 historic lanes arranged in a pattern commonly compared to a turtle’s back and the traditional Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams. Around 192 Ming- and Qing-era residences survive within the historic quarters, giving Shiping the character of an open-air museum of traditional southern Yunnan architecture.

The Shiping Confucian Temple, Yuping Academy, old government offices, former residences, ancestral halls, and scholarly lanes illustrate how Confucian education took root in a culturally diverse frontier region.

    Military Settlements and Han Migration

During the Ming Dynasty, government policies encouraged military settlers and families from central and eastern China to move into Yunnan. These migrants introduced architectural styles, Confucian institutions, craft traditions, family genealogies, and ancestral-hall culture.

Zhengying Village (郑营村) in Baoxiu Town is a particularly important example. Originally established as a military settlement in the early Ming period, it later developed into an influential scholarly and commercial village. Its lanes, courtyards, ancestral halls, and woodcarvings preserve the social history of migration and settlement in southern Yunnan.

The woodcarvings of the Chen Family Ancestral Hall (陈氏宗祠) are so elaborate that the building is often described as a museum of folk woodcarving in southern Yunnan.

    Ethnic Groups in Shiping County

Shiping is home to more than 30 ethnic groups, including the Yi, Han, Hani, Hui, Dai, and others. Ethnic minorities account for more than half of the county’s population, with the Yi forming the largest minority community.

The Huayao branch of the Yi people is especially prominent around Shaochong Town (哨冲镇). The area has been designated a provincial-level traditional cultural protection zone because of its distinctive clothing, embroidery, music, dance, festivals, oral traditions, and ceremonial customs.

Other important ethnic-cultural areas include Longpeng Town, Niujie Town, Longwu Town, Xincheng Township, Daqiao Township, and the villages surrounding Yilong Lake.

    Ethnic Towns and Cultural Areas

Shiping does not currently have a separately designated ethnic township, but several towns contain concentrated Yi and Hani communities.

    Shaochong Town

Shaochong Town is the cultural heartland of the Huayao Yi people. It preserves traditional embroidery, paper cutting, women’s dragon dances, ritual songs, courtship customs, and distinctive ceremonial dress.

The term “Huayao,” meaning “colorful waist,” refers to the richly embroidered waistbands and layered clothing worn by local Yi women. The patterns express ancestry, nature, social identity, and aesthetic traditions passed down through generations.

    Longpeng Town

Longpeng Town contains numerous Yi villages and preserves local music, dance, village rituals, and agricultural customs. It is also associated with traditional song gatherings and community celebrations.

    Niujie Town

Niujie Town is known for mountainous ethnic villages and distinctive stone architecture. Some houses in Laoxudian Village were constructed using locally collected fossil-bearing stone, creating an unusual architectural landscape.

    Yilong Town

Yilong Town includes Shiping Old Town, villages around Yilong Lake, and several communities where Han and Yi traditions coexist. Doudiwan and Luosewan are especially important for Yi song-and-dance culture.

    Representative Ethnic Villages

    Doudiwan Village

Doudiwan Village (豆地湾村) near Yilong Lake is associated with the development and preservation of Haicai Tune and Cigarette-Box Dance. Traditional singing and dancing gatherings remain important expressions of local community identity.

    Luosewan Village

Luosewan Village (罗色湾村) is a traditional Yi settlement connected with Doudiwan’s cultural landscape. It preserves ethnic customs, village architecture, songs, dances, and agricultural traditions.

    Xiaoruicheng Village

Xiaoruicheng Village (小瑞城村) is another representative Yi village in Yilong Town. It offers opportunities to observe traditional settlement patterns and rural life around Yilong Lake.

    Dapingdi Village

Dapingdi Village (大平地村) in Daqiao Township combines ethnic village culture with farming landscapes and agricultural experiences. It is suitable for visitors interested in rural life rather than conventional sightseeing.

    Tuolonghei Village

Tuolonghei Village (托竜黑村) in Shaochong Town is associated with Huayao Yi culture and local ethnic-unity initiatives. Traditional dress, embroidery, festivals, and community culture remain central to village life.

    Zhengying Village

Although Zhengying Village is primarily associated with Han military-settlement culture, it is an essential part of Shiping’s multiethnic history. Its architecture reflects the long interaction between migrant Han communities and the indigenous cultures of southern Yunnan.

Intangible Cultural Heritage in Shiping County

Shiping has established a four-level heritage-protection system covering national, provincial, prefectural, and county representative projects. Its protected traditions encompass music, dance, metalworking, embroidery, paper cutting, festivals, folk customs, and food craftsmanship.

    National Intangible Cultural Heritage

    Heritage Item Category Cultural Importance
Haicai Tune (海菜腔) Traditional music A highly developed form of Yi folk singing associated with communities around Yilong Lake
Cigarette-Box Dance (烟盒舞) Traditional dance A rhythmic Yi dance performed with small wooden cigarette boxes used as percussion instruments
Black Copper Inlaid with Silver (乌铜走银) Traditional craftsmanship A distinctive metalworking technique creating silver patterns on darkened copper surfaces

    Haicai Tune

Haicai Tune is one of Shiping’s most celebrated cultural traditions. The name refers to an aquatic plant once common in Yilong Lake, while the music itself developed among Yi communities living around the lake.

Singers use powerful, resonant voices and complex melodic structures to express love, nature, daily life, historical memory, and social relationships. Performances may involve improvised antiphonal singing, with singers responding to one another across long musical passages.

    Cigarette-Box Dance

The Cigarette-Box Dance is a dynamic Yi folk dance in which performers hold small wooden boxes between their fingers and strike them rhythmically while stepping, turning, squatting, and jumping. Dance movements frequently imitate farming, hunting, animals, and everyday activities.

The dance can be performed during festivals, courtship gatherings, village celebrations, and communal evenings. Shiping is one of its most important places of origin and preservation.

    Black Copper Inlaid with Silver

Black Copper Inlaid with Silver is a rare decorative metalworking technique. Craftspeople engrave patterns into copper objects, insert silver into the grooves, polish the surface, and use a special oxidation process to turn the copper dark while leaving the silver patterns bright.

Finished objects may include incense burners, boxes, vases, brush holders, tea utensils, and decorative art. The contrast between black copper and silver creates the technique’s distinctive appearance.

    Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage Bearers

Shiping has more than 160 recognized heritage bearers at national, provincial, prefectural, and county levels. The Huayao Yi Cultural Ecological Protection Zone around Shaochong Town has a particularly concentrated network of tradition bearers.

Representative Bearers in the Huayao Yi Cultural Protection Area

    Protection Level Representative Bearers
Provincial Level Luo Zhibao (罗智保), Sun Zhengyao (孙正尧), Pu Qinghua (普青华), Pu Fazhen (普发珍), Pu Hemei (普合妹), Pu Jiang (普江)

Additional prefectural-level bearers have been recognized for Haicai Tune, Cigarette-Box Dance, Yi paper cutting, embroidery, and the Singing Festival held on the tenth day of the second lunar month.

Because official heritage lists are periodically updated, travelers, researchers, and study-tour organizers should consult the Shiping County cultural authorities for the latest complete register.

    Huayao Yi Culture

Huayao Yi culture is among Shiping’s most distinctive ethnic traditions. Its most visible expression is women’s ceremonial clothing, decorated with colorful embroidery, layered textiles, silver ornaments, and richly patterned waistbands.

Traditional Huayao Yi culture also includes:

    • Embroidery and textile craftsmanship
    • Paper-cut designs used as embroidery patterns
    • Women’s dragon dances
    • Fire and dragon worship
    • Courtship songs and communal singing
    • Agricultural rituals
    • Traditional marriage customs
    • The Singing and Dancing Festival
    • The Tiaogupo Festival

The culture remains active in village celebrations, family life, community performances, and local heritage workshops.

Other Ethnic Music and Dance Traditions

Shiping is widely known as a hometown of folk music and dance. In addition to Haicai Tune and Cigarette-Box Dance, the county preserves Huayao Yi songs and dances, Xianggan Dance, Pulagu Dance, Hani Sangbang Dance, Hani instrumental music, and Dai Hao Dance.

The internationally known stage production Dynamic Yunnan drew performers and artistic material from Yi communities in Shiping, demonstrating the national influence of the county’s ethnic traditions.

    Major Ethnic Festivals

    Yi Torch Festival

The Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节) is celebrated in the sixth lunar month. Villagers light torches and bonfires, perform traditional dances, sing, hold competitions, and pray for favorable weather and good harvests.

    Tiaogupo Festival

The Tiaogupo Festival (跳鼓坡节) is an important Yi gathering featuring ritual activities, music, dancing, courtship, and community celebrations.

    Huayao Yi Dragon Worship Festival

The Huayao Yi Dragon Worship Festival (花腰彝祭龙节) expresses respect for nature, water, ancestors, and protective spiritual forces. Ceremonial activities vary among villages and should be observed respectfully.

Huayao Yi Singing and Dancing Festival

The Huayao Yi Singing and Dancing Festival (花腰彝赛歌舞节) brings together singers, dancers, musicians, and villagers in traditional dress. The festival held around the tenth day of the second lunar month is one of the best times to experience Huayao Yi culture.

Chinese Traditional Villages in Shiping County

Shiping has one of the largest concentrations of nationally listed traditional villages in Yunnan. Approximately 45 villages across the county have been included in the Chinese Traditional Villages List.

The list is jointly administered through China’s national traditional-village protection program rather than being issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs alone.

    Important Traditional Villages

    Zhengying Village

Zhengying is a nationally recognized historic and cultural village known for its “three streets and nine lanes” layout. Its ancestral halls, residences, gates, carvings, and courtyards preserve the history of Ming military settlements and local clan culture.

The Chen Family Ancestral Hall is the village’s architectural highlight, while the Zheng Family Ancestral Hall and other historic residences illustrate the wealth and educational traditions of prominent local families.

    Laoxudian Village

Laoxudian Village (老旭甸村) in Niujie Town is distinguished by buildings constructed with fossil-bearing stone. The unusual walls, mountain setting, and traditional village structure make it valuable for architectural and geological study.

    Doudiwan and Luosewan

These neighboring Yi settlements are important for the preservation of Haicai Tune, Cigarette-Box Dance, ethnic festivals, and lakeside agricultural traditions. They are particularly suitable for cultural study tours arranged with local community participation.

Chen Family Ancestral Hall Zhengying Village Nationally protected architecture celebrated for intricate folk woodcarving
Yuping Academy (玉屏书院) Shiping Old Town Historic center of Confucian education, now associated with museum and cultural functions

    Shiping Old Town

Shiping Old Town remains less commercialized than many famous ancient towns in Yunnan. Its appeal lies in everyday life continuing among ancestral halls, courtyard homes, temples, markets, wells, and narrow lanes.

The cultural core includes Shiping Confucian Temple, Yuping Academy, the Former Residence of Yuan Jiagu, and Guanyinsi Lane. Historically associated with successful examination candidates and Hanlin scholars, Guanyinsi Lane is sometimes called the “Lane of Jinshi Scholars.”

Local markets remain an important part of the old town’s atmosphere, allowing visitors to encounter Shiping tofu, seasonal produce, household goods, and traditional foods alongside historic architecture.

    Confucian Temple and Yuping Academy

The Shiping Confucian Temple and Yuping Academy represent the county’s scholarly heritage. The larger architectural complex also includes historic administrative buildings and former residences, covering an extensive area within the old town.

Decorative carvings, courtyards, halls, stone tablets, and ceremonial spaces illustrate the importance of Confucian education in Shiping’s social development.

    Yuan Jiagu’s Former Residence

The Former Residence of Yuan Jiagu introduces visitors to the life of one of Yunnan’s most distinguished modern scholars. The residence preserves traditional domestic architecture and displays materials related to his education, scholarship, and public career.

It is an essential stop for understanding why Shiping became known as a Land of Literature.

    Shiping Railway Heritage

The old Shiping Railway Station, built in a French-influenced style in 1936, is a surviving reminder of the narrow-gauge railway network connected with the broader history of the Yunnan–Vietnam Railway.

Its platforms, station architecture, tracks, and railway atmosphere make it a popular photography location. Railway heritage also demonstrates how modern transportation transformed trade, migration, and cultural exchange in southern Yunnan.

Visitors must obey safety barriers and should never walk onto operating tracks without authorization.

    Yilong Lake Cultural Landscape

Yilong Lake is closely connected with Shiping’s ethnic music, agricultural history, and village life. Haicai Tune takes its name from a plant traditionally associated with the lake, while many Yi communities around its shores preserve singing and dancing customs.

Walking or cycling beside the lake allows visitors to combine natural scenery with cultural sites such as Laihe Pavilion, traditional villages, farmlands, wetlands, and local markets.

    Cultural Travel Experiences in Shiping

    Walk Through Shiping Old Town

A cultural visit should begin with the Confucian Temple, Yuping Academy, Yuan Jiagu’s Former Residence, Guanyinsi Lane, and the surrounding historic streets. Slow exploration is more rewarding than rushing between individual monuments because much of the old town’s character survives in courtyards, doorways, markets, and neighborhood life.

    Experience Huayao Yi Culture

Shaochong Town is the principal destination for Huayao Yi culture. With suitable advance arrangements, visitors may watch Haicai Tune, Cigarette-Box Dance, women’s dragon dancing, embroidery, paper cutting, and other heritage demonstrations.

Festival periods offer the richest experience, but ceremonies are community traditions rather than performances created solely for tourists. Photography and recording should only take place with permission.

    Visit Zhengying Historic Village

Zhengying is the best-known historic village in Shiping. Visitors can walk through its three streets and nine lanes, study the carved architecture of its ancestral halls, and learn how Ming military settlers established communities in southern Yunnan.

    Explore Stone Architecture in Laoxudian

Laoxudian is recommended for travelers interested in vernacular architecture and geology. Its fossil-stone houses create a village landscape quite different from the courtyard residences of Shiping Old Town and Zhengying.

    Cycle Around Yilong Lake

A lakeside cycling or walking excursion combines wetlands, farmlands, pavilions, village culture, and local food. Early morning and late afternoon provide the most comfortable temperatures and attractive light.

    Discover Traditional Craftsmanship

Visitors may encounter Yi embroidery, paper cutting, traditional clothing, Black Copper Inlaid with Silver, and other local crafts. Authentic handmade products require considerable time and skill, so prices are generally higher than factory-made souvenirs.

Buying directly from recognized artisans or community workshops helps support living heritage.

    Cultural Etiquette and Practical Advice

Traditional villages are living communities rather than open-air museums. Visitors should avoid entering private courtyards without permission, touching ritual objects, interrupting ceremonies, or photographing residents at close range without asking.

For ethnic festivals, wear comfortable clothing, follow local instructions, and allow community members priority around ritual spaces. Some villages have limited public transport, restaurants, and foreign-language services, making a local guide or prearranged vehicle particularly useful.

Summer brings rain and strong vegetation around the lake and mountain villages, while winter and spring are generally drier. Sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, rain protection, and a light outer layer are useful throughout the year.

History and Culture Tour with Yaso Trip

Shiping’s heritage is written in many forms: Confucian tablets, carved ancestral halls, the lanes of an old military settlement, embroidered Huayao Yi clothing, the melodies of Haicai Tune, the rhythms of Cigarette-Box Dance, and the rails of a historic narrow-gauge railway.

A History and Culture Tour with Yaso Trip can connect Shiping Old Town, Zhengying Village, Yilong Lake, Shaochong’s Huayao Yi communities, and the county’s traditional villages through carefully arranged cultural encounters. Rather than simply watching local traditions, travelers can meet craftspeople, listen to village singers, study historic architecture, and understand how Han, Yi, Hani, Hui, and Dai cultures have shaped this remarkable corner of southern Yunnan.
