Shiping County (石屏县) is one of southern Yunnan’s most rewarding destinations for slow travel. It lacks the heavy commercial atmosphere of better-known tourist cities, yet offers a remarkably rich combination of historic neighbourhoods, Confucian heritage, traditional courtyard houses, Yi culture, a century-old railway and the broad wetlands of Yilong Lake.
The county’s signature experiences can be expressed through three local identities: the thousand-year-old Shiping Ancient Town, the century-old aroma of Shiping tofu and the scenic beauty of Yilong Lake. Two days are sufficient for the principal attractions, while three days allow time for the tourist train, lakeside cycling and traditional villages.

How Many Days to Spend in Shiping
One Day
A one-day visit is possible when travelling from Jianshui by private car. Concentrate on Shiping Ancient Town in the morning and Yilong Lake in the afternoon. This arrangement introduces the county’s cultural and natural identities but leaves little time for traditional villages or the tourist railway.
Two Days and One Night
Two days provide the best compact itinerary. Visitors can explore the ancient town and its historical buildings on the first day, followed by Yilong Lake and Zhengying Village on the second.
Three Days and Two Nights
Three days are recommended for travellers interested in the metre-gauge railway, cycling, photography, local markets and rural culture. The additional time also allows for a slower pace and adjustments for weather or attraction opening hours.
Four Days or Longer
A longer stay suits cyclists, photographers, families and travellers seeking a quiet lakeside holiday. Additional time can be used for Baoxiu, Shaochong, Longpeng, Huayao Yi villages or a combined Shiping–Jianshui journey.
How to Get to Shiping County
By Train and Road Transfer
Shiping does not currently have a national passenger railway station served by regular high-speed or intercity trains. The nearest convenient national railway gateway is Jianshui Railway Station (建水站).
From Jianshui Station, continue to Shiping by:
- Intercity or scheduled passenger bus.
- Taxi or ride-hailing vehicle.
- Chartered car.
- Pre-arranged hotel or tour transfer.
The road journey normally takes less than one hour, depending on traffic and the final destination in Shiping.
Travellers should not confuse Shiping’s heritage railway stations with national passenger-railway stations. The local metre-gauge trains are tourism experiences rather than practical long-distance transport.
By Long-Distance Bus
Scheduled and customised passenger services connect Shiping with Kunming, Jianshui, Mengzi and other regional destinations. Bus frequency and boarding points may change, so confirm arrangements shortly before departure.
For international visitors carrying luggage, travelling through Jianshui and arranging a private transfer is generally easier than navigating local coach services.
By Self-Driving
Self-driving provides the greatest flexibility for visiting Shiping Ancient Town, Yilong Lake, Zhengying Village and outlying rural areas. From Kunming, the journey usually takes approximately three hours under normal road conditions.
Common regional routes include:
- Kunming → Yuxi → Tonghai → Shiping
- Kunming → Jianshui → Shiping
- Mengzi → Jianshui → Shiping
- Shiping → Yuanyang Rice Terraces
- Shiping → Yuanjiang → Xinping
Roads between the main towns are generally suitable for ordinary cars. Mountain roads towards remote Yi communities may be narrower and more demanding, particularly during the rainy season.
Foreign visitors need a Chinese driving licence or approved temporary Chinese driving permit to drive legally in mainland China.
Getting Around Shiping
Walking
Shiping Ancient Town is compact and best explored on foot. Its historic lanes, courtyard houses, temples, markets and tofu stalls are close together, and driving through the old streets is neither convenient nor necessary.
Taxi and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles are convenient for travel between the ancient town, Yilong Lake, Zhengying Village and the bus station. Vehicle availability may be more limited in rural areas, so arrange a return journey in advance.
Shared E-Bikes
Shared electric bicycles are practical for short journeys within the county centre and between the ancient town and nearby lakeside areas. Parking restrictions and operating zones may apply.
Shared e-bikes are not appropriate for a complete circuit of Yilong Lake unless the operator’s permitted area and battery range have been confirmed.
Bicycle
Bicycles are the best way to experience the dedicated route around Yilong Lake. The main circuit is approximately 37 kilometres long and is largely flat, making it suitable for both recreational riders and experienced cyclists.
A cycling service station provides rentals, repairs, refreshments and basic support. Facilities such as rest areas, toilets and scenic viewpoints are distributed along the route.
Private Car
A private car is helpful for Zhengying Village, Baoxiu, Shaochong and other rural destinations. Parking inside Shiping Ancient Town can be limited, so leave the vehicle at an authorised parking area and continue on foot.
Two-Day Shiping Classic Tour
Day 1: Shiping Ancient Town, Confucian Heritage and Tofu Culture
Begin your journey at Shiping Ancient Town (石屏古城), entering through the southern section and continuing along its traditional street network. The old town is sometimes described as having a turtle-shaped layout, with numerous lanes extending through neighbourhoods filled with Ming- and Qing-style residences.
Visit Shiping Confucian Temple (石屏文庙), an important expression of the county’s scholarly tradition. The complex reflects Shiping’s historic reputation as a “renowned land of literature,” where education and classical learning shaped local society.
Continue to the Former Residence of Yuan Jiagu (袁嘉谷故居). Yuan Jiagu was Yunnan’s only top-ranked scholar in the special imperial examination, and his former home offers insight into the intellectual history of late imperial and early modern Yunnan.
Walk to Yuping Academy (玉屏书院), now associated with the county’s museum and cultural displays. Its ceremonial gateway, courtyards and educational setting make it one of the ancient town’s principal cultural landmarks.
Further stops can include Shipingfeng Cultural Courtyard (石屏风) in the Yu Family Residence, traditional wells and historic courtyard houses. The old town’s architecture is not confined to isolated monuments; much of its appeal comes from the everyday residential fabric of its streets and lanes.
Later, visit the Shiping Tofu Museum (石屏豆腐博物馆) or a traditional tofu workshop. Shiping tofu is made with naturally mineralised well water rather than conventional gypsum coagulants. Where arrangements permit, visitors can learn about soaking, grinding, filtering, pressing and fermentation.
Spend the evening exploring the old streets and barbecue stalls. Freshly grilled Shiping tofu is served directly from the charcoal stove and eaten with dry chilli seasoning or a dipping sauce. Other local dishes include grilled meat, rice noodles, purple-rice cakes and seasonal fruit drinks.
Accommodation: Shiping Ancient Town or central Shiping.
Day 2: Yilong Lake Cycling and Zhengying Ancient Village
Travel to Yilong Lake National Wetland Park (异龙湖国家湿地公园) in the morning. The lake is Shiping’s principal natural landscape and an important wetland habitat surrounded by farmland, villages and mountain scenery.
Visitors can choose among three ways to explore:
- Walk along a shorter section of the boardwalk.
- Rent a bicycle for part of the lakeside route.
- Complete the approximately 37-kilometre cycling circuit.
The full route is mostly level and separated from motor traffic, but riders should still allow several hours for photographs, meals and rest stops. The most comfortable cycling seasons are spring and autumn.
Depending on the route, stop at a lakeside village or continue towards Baxin Town (坝心镇) for local fish dishes. Seasonal specialities may include clay-pot fish, fried lake fish, lotus-root dishes and other wetland ingredients.
Railway enthusiasts can visit the historic metre-gauge station areas beside Yilong Lake. Their architecture reflects the history of the privately built Gejiu–Bisezhai–Shiping Railway.
In the afternoon, continue to Zhengying Ancient Village (郑营古村), approximately ten kilometres from central Shiping. Known for its well-preserved traditional residential architecture, Zhengying has more than six centuries of settlement history.
The village’s highlight is the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈氏宗祠), recognised for its carved wooden decoration, ceremonial spaces and traditional architectural details. Walk quietly through the lanes and remember that many historic houses remain private residences.
Return to Shiping or continue to Jianshui after the visit.
Three-Day Shiping Slow-Travel Tour
Day 1: Ancient Town Heritage and Night Food
Follow the first day of the classic itinerary, covering the Confucian Temple, Yuan Jiagu’s former residence, Yuping Academy, historic residential lanes and tofu culture.
If the visit coincides with a local market day, explore the market area to see vegetables, fruit, spices, tofu products and everyday household goods. Market dates can change, so confirm locally rather than relying entirely on a fixed calendar.
Spend the evening eating grilled tofu and exploring the old town after the day visitors have left.
Day 2: Metre-Gauge Tourist Train and Yilong Lake
Experience the Shiping Metre-Gauge Tourist Train (石屏米轨小火车) if it is operating. The tourist railway uses part of the historic railway corridor and passes through the cultural landscape around Yilong Lake.
Train operating days, departure times and routes can change because of maintenance, seasonal programming or special events. Reserve in advance and verify the service before building the day around it.
After the train journey, spend the afternoon cycling or walking beside Yilong Lake. Visitors who do not want to complete the entire circuit can select a shorter section near the wetland park, traditional stations or lakeside villages.
Late afternoon is usually the most attractive time for photography, when sunlight softens and the mountains reflect across the water. Return to town before dark unless equipped for night cycling.
Day 3: Zhengying Village and Lesser-Known Cultural Sites
Spend the morning exploring Zhengying Village at an unhurried pace. Visit the ancestral hall, study the traditional house layouts and observe the relationship between agricultural life and historical architecture.
In the afternoon, choose one or two quieter attractions according to interest:
- Xiushan Temple (秀山寺) for religious architecture and a peaceful mountain setting.
- Laihe Pavilion (来鹤亭) for local history and landscape views.
- Baoxiu Town (宝秀镇) for traditional villages and rural culture.
- A Huayao Yi community around Shaochong for embroidery and ethnic traditions, provided the visit is arranged respectfully.
- A tofu workshop or cultural studio for a hands-on experience.
Return to Jianshui, Kunming or the next destination after completing the visit.
Optional Extensions
Shiping and Jianshui Cultural Route
A highly practical regional combination is:
Kunming → Jianshui → Shiping → Kunming
Jianshui offers a larger ancient city, Confucian heritage, purple pottery and the Tuanshan metre-gauge train, while Shiping provides a quieter ancient town, tofu culture and the natural scenery of Yilong Lake.
Allow at least four or five days for both destinations.
Shiping and Yuanyang Rice Terraces
For landscape and cultural travel, combine:
Jianshui → Shiping → Yuanyang Rice Terraces
This route links ancient towns, highland wetlands, Yi culture and the UNESCO-listed Hani rice terraces. A private car is the most efficient option because the attractions are distributed across mountainous terrain.
Shiping and Huayao Yi Culture
Travellers interested in ethnic traditions can extend the trip towards Shaochong, Longwu or other Huayao Yi communities. Cultural experiences may include embroidery, traditional clothing, Haicai folk singing and the Cigarette-Box Dance.
Village visits should be arranged through local guides, cultural organisations or community contacts rather than treated as unannounced sightseeing stops.
Best Time to Visit Shiping
March to May
Spring brings comfortable temperatures and flowering landscapes around Yilong Lake. From approximately mid-April into May, the county flower blooms along sections of the lakeshore. Flowering dates vary with weather.
Spring is excellent for cycling, walking and architectural photography, although ultraviolet radiation remains strong.
June to September
Summer is the wet season and the greenest time of year. Lotus flowers, rice fields and misty mountains create atmospheric scenery, while average temperatures remain relatively moderate.
Rain can interrupt cycling and rural travel. Arrange outdoor activities in the morning and keep the afternoon programme flexible.
September to November
Autumn offers some of the year’s best cycling and photography conditions. Rainfall decreases, the air becomes clearer and harvest-season food appears in local markets and restaurants.
November to February
Winter is dry, sunny and well suited to long stays. Migratory birds may be seen around Yilong Lake, while the ancient town remains comfortable for daytime exploration.
Mornings and evenings can be cold, so layered clothing is essential.
Where to Stay in Shiping
Shiping Ancient Town
The ancient town is the best location for first-time visitors. Traditional courtyard guesthouses place travellers within walking distance of the Confucian Temple, Yuping Academy, tofu workshops and evening food stalls.
Historic properties can have steep stairs, limited soundproofing or no lift, so travellers with mobility requirements should confirm room access before booking.
Central Shiping
Modern hotels outside the ancient lanes offer easier parking, lifts and more standardised facilities. This area is suitable for business travellers, families and self-driving visitors.
Yilong Lake Area
Lakeside accommodation suits cyclists, photographers and visitors seeking a quiet rural stay. Dining and evening transport choices are more limited than in the county centre.
International visitors should confirm before booking that the property can complete the required registration for foreign guests.
Shiping Food Experiences
Shiping Tofu
Shiping Tofu (石屏豆腐) is the county’s defining food. Traditional producers use mineral-rich well water to coagulate the soybean milk, creating tofu with a distinctive texture and flavour.
It may be grilled, fermented, deep-fried, braised or served in hotpot. Fresh grilled tofu from an established local stall is the essential first experience.
Bamianshao Fried Fish
Bamianshao Fried Fish (八面煎鱼) is prepared by frying lake fish until the exterior and smaller bones become crisp. It is commonly found at restaurants around Yilong Lake.
Other Local Dishes
Other foods worth trying include:
- Yangmei pork ribs.
- Cold rolled rice noodles.
- Purple-rice cake.
- Grilled pork skin.
- Sweet rice jelly.
- Lotus-root starch dumplings.
- Seasonal lake fish and lotus-root dishes.
For the most authentic experience, explore local streets away from the principal visitor entrances rather than relying entirely on scenic-area restaurants.
Yilong Lake Cycling Guide
The principal cycling circuit around Yilong Lake is approximately 37 kilometres and largely separated from motor vehicles. It is relatively flat, with only modest cumulative climbing, making it accessible to most reasonably fit travellers.
Rest pavilions, toilets, viewpoints and selected supply points are available along the route, but carrying water and basic snacks is still advisable.
Allow sufficient time for rest stops and photography. Recreational riders should not attempt the full circuit late in the afternoon unless they can return before dark.
The best cycling periods are February to May and September to November. During summer, check the thunderstorm forecast and avoid exposed wetland sections in severe weather.
Shiping Metre-Gauge Tourist Train
The tourist train is part of the heritage of the Gejiu–Bisezhai–Shiping Railway (个碧石铁路), historically notable as China’s first privately financed railway.
This train should be viewed as a cultural attraction rather than transport for reaching Shiping. Services may follow special operating calendars, and departures can be suspended for maintenance, weather or railway coordination.
Book only after confirming:
- The operating date.
- Departure station.
- Departure and return times.
- Whether the journey is one-way or round-trip.
- Which heritage stations are included.
- Passport requirements for ticket collection.
Practical Travel Advice
Attraction Opening Hours
Indoor cultural sites such as the Confucian Temple, Yuan Jiagu’s former residence and museum spaces may close earlier than outdoor attractions. Visit them in the morning or early afternoon and leave the ancient-town streets for later in the day.
Some museums close on Mondays or during temporary maintenance. Confirm locally before visiting.
Sun Protection
Shiping lies on a low-latitude plateau with strong ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are necessary for cycling, wetland walks and village visits.
Clothing
A light jacket is useful throughout the year because mornings, evenings and lakeside areas can be cooler than midday.
During the rainy season, wear quick-drying clothing and non-slip shoes. In winter, bring a sweater and warm jacket, particularly when visiting mountain villages.
Yilong Lake Protection
Yilong Lake is an ecologically sensitive wetland undergoing long-term conservation and water-quality restoration. Follow signs, remain on designated trails and cycling routes, and do not enter closed wetland areas.
Visitors should not feed birds, pick flowers, fish without permission or leave rubbish beside the lake.
Photography and Village Etiquette
Ask permission before photographing residents, private courtyards, workshops or ceremonial activities. Zhengying and other traditional settlements are living communities rather than open-air museums.
Do not enter locked or clearly private buildings without an invitation.
Payments and Cash
Mobile payments are widely used, but international visitors may encounter difficulties at small rural stalls. Connect an accepted international bank card to a supported Chinese payment application and carry a limited amount of cash as backup.
Health and Emergency Services
Shiping has county-level hospitals, pharmacies and banking services. The principal emergency numbers throughout China are:
| Police |
110 |
| Fire |
119 |
| Ambulance |
120 |
| Consumer complaints |
12315 |
Carry travel insurance and keep your passport information securely stored. For cycling or rural excursions, save the hotel’s phone number and your destination name in Chinese.
How to Plan Shiping Tours with Yaso Trip
The best Shiping journey is not built around a crowded checklist. Stay in or near Shiping Ancient Town, reserve the first day for its scholarly heritage and tofu culture, and devote the second to Yilong Lake and Zhengying Ancient Village. Add a third day for the metre-gauge tourist train, Huayao Yi culture or quieter temples and rural communities.
Confirm the tourist-train schedule and indoor-site opening hours shortly before arrival. Use Jianshui Railway Station as the main national rail gateway, arrange a road transfer into Shiping and select a hotel that can register international guests. Most importantly, leave enough unscheduled time to wander through the old lanes, sit beside a charcoal tofu stove and wait for the evening light over Yilong Lake.
