Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture (怒江傈僳族自治州) is one of China’s most distinctive destinations for canyon scenery, ethnic culture and outdoor exploration. Marketed under the tourism theme “Mysterious Nujiang, an Outdoor Paradise,” the prefecture occupies part of the Three Parallel Rivers region in northwestern Yunnan, where the Nujiang, Lancang and Jinsha river systems flow between immense mountain ranges.
The Nujiang Grand Canyon (怒江大峡谷) forms the geographical and cultural backbone of the prefecture. The Gaoligong Mountains (高黎贡山) rise to the west, while the Biluo Snow Mountains (碧罗雪山) extend along the eastern side of the valley. Together, they create deep gorges, snow-covered peaks, subtropical forests, mountain villages and dramatic vertical climate zones.
Nujiang’s four county-level areas—Lushui City, Fugong County, Gongshan Dulong and Nu Autonomous County, and Lanping Bai and Pumi Autonomous County—offer very different travel experiences. Lushui is the principal gateway, Fugong is known for Nu villages and mountain culture, Gongshan contains Bingzhongluo and Dulongjiang, while Lanping combines the Lancang River watershed with Pumi, Bai and Lisu heritage.
Overview of Nujiang Tourist Attractions
Nujiang is not a conventional destination built around large amusement parks or highly commercialised sightseeing areas. Its strongest attractions are natural landscapes, living villages, ethnic traditions, historic settlements and long-distance road journeys.
The prefecture is home to Lisu, Nu, Dulong, Pumi, Bai and several other ethnic communities. Traditional singing, weaving, festivals, religious practices, farming and village architecture remain visible parts of everyday life.
Nujiang has developed several nationally rated tourist areas, including 4A attractions such as Dulongjiang and Laomudeng, together with a growing network of 3A cultural villages, rural tourism areas and ecological destinations. Ratings, entry arrangements and opening conditions should be checked before travel because remote scenic areas may be affected by weather, conservation measures or border regulations.

Travel Notes for Nujiang Attractions
Nujiang’s attractions are widely dispersed, and journey times are often longer than map distances suggest. Private vehicles and organised tours are more practical than relying entirely on public transport.
The dry season from October to April generally provides the most stable conditions for road journeys, village visits and outdoor activities. The summer monsoon creates lush landscapes but also brings the possibility of landslides, falling rocks and temporary road closures.
Dulongjiang and some border areas may require reservations, identity checks or special access arrangements. Regulations can change, so foreign travellers should confirm current requirements before departure.
Visitors should request permission before photographing residents, religious ceremonies or private homes. The remaining elderly Dulong women with traditional facial tattoos must be treated with dignity and should never be approached as tourist exhibits.
Nujiang Attractions Travel Overview
The appeal of Nujiang lies in the relationship between its landscapes and its people. The Nujiang Grand Canyon, Gaoligong Mountains and Biluo Snow Mountains provide the physical setting, while Lisu songs, Nu villages, Dulong textiles, Pumi traditions and border history give the region its cultural depth.
For first-time travellers, the classic route follows Lushui–Fugong–Laomudeng–Zhiziluo–Gongshan–Bingzhongluo, with Dulongjiang added for travellers who have more time. Lanping can be included as an eastern extension for visitors interested in Pumi culture, alpine landscapes and the Lancang River Valley.
Nujiang is best experienced slowly. Its most rewarding moments often occur outside conventional scenic areas—on a mountain road above the river, beside a village hearth, during a traditional song or while watching morning light move across the canyon.
