Malipo County (麻栗坡县) lies on the China–Vietnam border in southeastern Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (文山壮族苗族自治州). For centuries, its mountain passes served as migration corridors, trading routes and strategic frontier positions. This complex history has created a cultural landscape where prehistoric rock art, traditional ethnic villages, living folk customs and modern battlefield heritage coexist.
Malipo’s cultural identity can be explored through three closely connected themes: ethnic minority heritage, represented by the Yi, Miao, Zhuang, Yao and Dai communities; ancient frontier history, represented by the Dawangyan Rock Paintings; and red culture, centred on Laoshan, Mankun Cave and other former battlefield sites. Together, they make Malipo one of the most distinctive cultural-tourism destinations along Yunnan’s southeastern frontier.
Ethnic Groups in Malipo County
Malipo is traditionally home to eight principal ethnic groups: the Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Yi, Dai, Mongolian and Gelao peoples. Ethnic minorities account for approximately 40.6% of the county’s population. According to an official county profile, Malipo’s history and society are defined by four characteristics: frontier location, ethnic diversity, mountainous geography and former battlefield heritage. Ethnic Minority Townships and Cultural Areas
Mengdong Yao Ethnic Township
Mengdong Yao Ethnic Township (猛硐瑶族乡) is Malipo’s only officially designated ethnic township. Located near Laoshan and bordering Vietnam, it has a predominantly minority population composed mainly of Yao, Miao, Zhuang and Dai communities.
The township is an important centre for Yao culture and Miao traditional sports. Its cultural resources include crossbow shooting, sheepskin-drum making, silverwork, folk songs, embroidery and seasonal celebrations. Xiangcaopeng Village (香草棚村) is associated with Miao crossbow traditions and provincial-level representative inheritor Wu Chaorong (吴朝荣).
Mengdong is also closely connected with Malipo’s red history. Its ethnic communities contributed labour, supplies and logistical support during the frontier conflicts, creating a local cultural memory in which ethnic traditions and battlefield history are deeply intertwined.
Donggan Town and Chengzhai Village
Donggan Town (董干镇) is one of the most important ethnic-cultural areas in Malipo. Its best-known destination is Chengzhai Village (城寨村), a settlement inhabited by the Bailuo branch of the Yi people (彝族白倮人).
The Bailuo have preserved distinctive clothing, rituals, bronze-drum dances and timber-building techniques. Their traditional houses are supported by dozens of wooden pillars arranged in several rows. Historically, much of the structure was fashioned with axes and assembled using sophisticated joinery rather than modern construction methods.
Ancient trees surround the settlement, reinforcing Chengzhai’s reputation as a secluded cultural village on the China–Vietnam frontier. The village is the principal living centre for Malipo’s Bronze-Drum Dance (铜鼓舞) and Buckwheat Vegetable Festival (荞菜节).
Tianbao Town
Tianbao Town (天保镇) is both a border settlement and an important meeting place for Han, Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Yi and Dai cultures. Tianbao Port historically connected communities on both sides of the frontier, encouraging trade, migration and cultural exchange.
In addition to its border markets, Tianbao contains former battlefield sites, traditional villages and local food customs. Cultural travel here should be combined with an understanding of the area’s modern history and the role of the border in local daily life.
Other Ethnic-Cultural Areas
Ethnic traditions are also distributed through Daping Town (大坪镇), Donggan Town (董干镇), Tianbao Town (天保镇), Xiajinchang Township (下金厂乡), Babu Township (八布乡), Liuhe Township (六河乡), Yangwan Township (杨万乡), Tiechang Township (铁厂乡) and Majie Township (马街乡). Many settlements are ethnically mixed, so food, festivals, music and ritual practices frequently cross community boundaries.

The Traditional Chinese Villages programme is not issued solely by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs. The first list was jointly organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development, Ministry of Culture, National Cultural Heritage Administration and Ministry of Finance. Later lists have been jointly released by several national ministries. This distinction is important when identifying the village’s official heritage status.
Intangible Cultural Heritage in Malipo County
Malipo has developed national, provincial, prefectural and county-level systems for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. Published local figures identify one national-level, seven provincial-level, sixteen prefectural-level and 203 county-level registry entries. These figures describe entries across different administrative levels and should not necessarily be interpreted as 227 entirely separate traditions, because a single heritage item may appear in more than one level of the safeguarding system.
The county’s intangible heritage encompasses traditional literature, music, dance, sports, crafts, food preparation, festivals and social customs.
National-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage
Bronze-Drum Dance
The Bronze-Drum Dance (铜鼓舞), officially registered as the Wenshan Zhuang and Yi Bronze-Drum Dance (文山壮族、彝族铜鼓舞), was included in the first national list of representative intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
In Malipo, the tradition is particularly associated with Bailuo Yi communities around Chengzhai. Dancers move in a circle to the rhythm of a bronze drum, traditionally proceeding anticlockwise. The drum is not merely a musical instrument: it connects ritual life with ancestral memory, community identity, prayer and protection. Yunnan Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Network

Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritors
Malipo’s safeguarding system includes inheritors recognized at national, provincial, prefectural and county levels. Published county figures report one national-level, sixteen provincial-level, twenty-four prefectural-level and thirty-seven county-level representative inheritors.
The following table lists key publicly documented inheritors connected with Malipo’s best-known traditions. It is a representative cultural-tourism reference rather than a substitute for the complete official administrative register, which may be updated when new batches are announced.

Major Ethnic Cultural Traditions
Bailuo Yi Culture
The Bailuo Yi (彝族白倮人) are among Malipo’s most distinctive cultural communities. Their heritage is concentrated around Chengzhai and other settlements in the Donggan area.
Bailuo identity is expressed through bronze-drum ceremonies, clothing, architecture, oral tradition and the Buckwheat Vegetable Festival. Their wooden houses are closely adapted to the humid mountain environment, while their agricultural calendar reflects a long relationship with buckwheat, forest resources and mountain farmland.
Miao Culture
Malipo’s Miao communities preserve lusheng music, ancient songs, embroidery, crossbow skills and the Huashan Festival. The lusheng functions as both a musical instrument and a medium for storytelling, courtship, celebration and community memory.
Traditional crossbow shooting combines hunting knowledge, physical skill and ceremonial performance. Today it also appears in ethnic sporting events and cultural festivals.
Zhuang Culture
Zhuang culture is visible through folk songs, embroidery, coloured glutinous rice, communal gatherings and border-market traditions. The Fengliu Street Gathering (风流街) combines singing, social interaction and festive exchange.
Zhuang villages are often located in warmer valleys and riverside areas, where rice cultivation, fish dishes and plant-dyed foods shape local culinary traditions.
Yao Culture
The Yao communities of Mengdong preserve traditions associated with Pangu ancestry, sheepskin drums, silver ornaments, embroidery and ritual music. The Panwang Festival (盘王节) is an important expression of Yao historical memory and ancestral identity.
Sheepskin-drum construction illustrates how craftsmanship, music and ritual are inseparable. A drum is both a handmade object and an essential component of communal ceremony.
Dai Culture
Malipo’s Dai communities are smaller than those of southern Yunnan but retain recognisable food and festival traditions. Coloured rice, glutinous-rice cakes, green-bean rice, sour-citrus duck and spring-water fish reflect the warm river valleys inhabited by local Dai families.
The Jin Xue Festival (锦学节) is an important local folk tradition and an expression of Dai community identity.
Historical and Cultural Sites
Dawangyan Rock Paintings
The Dawangyan Rock Paintings (大王岩岩画) are located on Yangjiaonao Mountain (羊角脑山) near the county seat. Dating from approximately 4,000 years ago, they represent one of the most important prehistoric cultural sites in southeastern Yunnan.
The surviving composition contains twenty-five images, including human figures, cattle, another animal and bud-like motifs. The use of colour and abstract form provides valuable evidence for the ritual life, social organization and artistic imagination of prehistoric communities in the Red River cultural sphere.
Dawangyan was designated as part of the seventh group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2013.
Mankun Cave, the Generals’ Cave
Mankun Cave (曼棍洞), also known as the Generals’ Cave (将军洞), lies near the foot of Laoshan and a short distance from Tianbao Port. During the 1984 Laoshan campaign, the cave served as a military command post.
It later became known as the Generals’ Cave because numerous officers who worked or fought in the area subsequently became senior military commanders. The limestone cave has upper, middle and lower levels, and its extensive internal passages provided natural protection and operational space.
In 2023, it was included in Yunnan’s second group of immovable revolutionary cultural relics. Today, it functions as a site for historical interpretation and patriotic education.
Original Laoshan Battlefield
The Original Laoshan Battlefield (老山战场原址) includes Laoshan Main Peak and a wider network of former positions, trenches, shelters, command posts, first-aid stations and tunnels. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Laoshan Spirit (老山精神), commonly associated with perseverance, sacrifice and dedication.
The battlefield was included in Yunnan’s second group of immovable revolutionary cultural relics in 2023. Some areas remain sensitive because of their border location or military history, and visitors must follow designated routes.
Bazi Former Minefield
The Bazi Former Minefield (坝子雷场) is connected with the story of mine-clearance hero Du Fuguo (杜富国). It represents the long-term consequences of frontier conflict and the difficult work undertaken to make former battlefield areas safe.
It should only be visited as part of an officially approved educational activity. Travellers must never enter closed land, leave marked routes or explore former military areas independently.
Koulinshan and Zheyinshan Battlefield Heritage
Koulinshan Main Peak (扣林山主峰) and the Zheyinshan Battlefield (者阴山战场) form part of Malipo’s wider frontier-war landscape. Exhibitions and preserved remains document military operations, local support efforts and individual acts of sacrifice.
These sites help visitors understand that Malipo’s red heritage extends beyond Laoshan and is distributed across several mountain and border communities.
Mengdong Martyrs Cemetery
The Mengdong Martyrs Cemetery (猛硐乡烈士陵园) commemorates those who died in frontier operations. Together with the nearby support-front memorial facilities, it also records the contribution of local villagers, militia members and transport teams.
Laoshan Battle Support-Front Memorial
The Laoshan Battle Support-Front Memorial (老山支前参战陈列馆) presents the stories of civilians and local communities who supplied food, transported equipment, cared for the wounded and supported frontline operations.
This perspective is essential to understanding Malipo’s red culture, which is not limited to battlefield narratives but also includes the experiences of border residents.
Traditional Festivals as Living Culture
Buckwheat Vegetable Festival
The Buckwheat Vegetable Festival (荞菜节), also called the Bailuo “Buckwheat New Year,” is held on the first Dragon Day of the fourth lunar month in Chengzhai Village.
The festival remembers an ancestral story in which buckwheat seed helped the Bailuo survive a period of famine. Ceremonies express gratitude for the crop and prayers for favourable weather and a good harvest. Bronze-drum dance, Buckwheat Vegetable Dance, traditional clothing and communal dining are central to the celebration. The 2026 festival continued to be held on this traditional lunar date. Malipo County Government
Miao Huashan Festival
The Miao Huashan Festival (苗族花山节) is one of Malipo’s largest Miao celebrations. Traditionally held around the Lunar New Year, it features lusheng music, singing, dancing, crossbow competitions, pole climbing and social gatherings.
Zhuang Third-Month Festival
The Zhuang Third-Month Festival (壮族三月三) takes place around the third day of the third lunar month. Singing gatherings, coloured glutinous rice, embroidered clothing and community activities express Zhuang cultural identity.
Yao Panwang Festival
The Yao Panwang Festival (瑶族盘王节) commemorates the legendary ancestor Panwang. Ritual music, sheepskin drums, songs and ceremonial clothing connect present-day Yao communities with their ancestral history.
Malipo History and Culture Tour with Yaso Trip
A cultural journey through Malipo should focus on meaningful encounters rather than attempting to cover every site in a fixed schedule. The county’s cultural resources can be organized around several complementary themes.

Best Cultural Experiences
The most rewarding cultural experiences include observing the Bronze-Drum Dance in Chengzhai, learning about Miao crossbow traditions in Mengdong, viewing the Dawangyan Rock Paintings with informed interpretation, sampling recognized food traditions and visiting Laoshan’s historical sites with a knowledgeable local guide.
Festival periods provide richer cultural encounters, but ceremonies should be approached as living community traditions rather than performances created solely for tourists. Visitors should allow local residents to determine where photography and participation are appropriate.
Practical Cultural Travel Advice
Chengzhai Village is relatively remote from Malipo’s county seat, and mountain roads can make journeys longer than expected. Private transport or a locally arranged vehicle is more practical than relying on public buses.
Border and former battlefield areas may be subject to identity checks, access restrictions or photography controls. Passports should be carried by international visitors, while drones should not be used near ports, military remains or border installations without explicit permission.
Respectful behaviour is essential in martyrs’ cemeteries, memorial halls and former battlefields. In ethnic villages, ask before photographing residents, ceremonies, ancestral objects or the interiors of traditional houses.
Yaso Trip can connect Malipo’s prehistoric heritage, ethnic villages, intangible cultural traditions and Laoshan red culture through locally coordinated visits, cultural interpretation and community-based experiences without reducing the journey to a rigid sightseeing schedule.
