  • Yuxi Administrative Divisions

Yuxi City (玉溪市) is located in central Yunnan and is one of the province's important urban and tourism centers. The city administers nine county-level divisions: two municipal districts, one county-level city and six counties or autonomous counties: Hongta District (红塔区), Jiangchuan District (江川区), Chengjiang City (澄江市), Tonghai County (通海县), Huaning County (华宁县), Yimen County (易门县), Eshan Yi Autonomous County (峨山彝族自治县), Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County (新平彝族傣族自治县) and Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County (元江哈尼族彝族傣族自治县). Current municipal planning and statistical information confirms these nine county-level administrative divisions.

Yuxi is widely associated with Nie Er, Yunnan tobacco culture, local lantern traditions and a diverse highland landscape. Its geography changes considerably from north to south, covering plateau lakes, karst mountains, forested highlands, river valleys and the warm, dry Yuanjiang valley. This geographical variety creates a wide range of tourism experiences, from lake holidays and geological exploration to ethnic villages, mountain trekking, traditional festivals, agricultural landscapes and cultural heritage.

The city is also home to Han, Yi, Dai, Hani, Hui, Mongolian and other communities. As a result, Yuxi's tourism resources extend well beyond natural scenery. Ancient towns, traditional villages, ethnic costumes, festivals, handicrafts, religious architecture, archaeological sites and agricultural traditions form an important part of the region's cultural landscape.

For international travelers, Yuxi is particularly suitable for combining several different landscapes in one journey. The northern lake region around Fuxian Lake and Xingyun Lake can be linked with Tonghai's historic culture, Huaning's pottery and hot springs, Yimen's forest and mushroom culture, and the Yi, Dai and Hani communities of Eshan, Xinping and Yuanjiang.

    Hongta District (红塔区)

Hongta District (红塔区) is the political, economic and cultural center of Yuxi and the location of the Yuxi municipal government. It is the most urbanized area of the city, while its surrounding mountains and rural settlements provide opportunities for countryside tourism and short mountain excursions.

The district is strongly associated with Nie Er (聂耳), the famous composer born in Yuxi, as well as Yuxi's lantern culture and ceramic traditions. Hongta Mountain (红塔山), Jiulong Pool (九龙池) and Longma Mountain (龙马山) are among the better-known natural and cultural attractions around the urban area.

Hongta District is also a convenient starting point for exploring other parts of Yuxi because hotels, restaurants, transport services and other visitor facilities are concentrated in the city.

    Jiangchuan District (江川区)

Jiangchuan District (江川区) is centered on Xingyun Lake (星云湖), one of Yuxi's major highland lakes. The area is also important for archaeological research into ancient Dian civilization, particularly the Lijia Mountain Bronze Culture Site (李家山青铜器文化遗址) and related discoveries.

The district combines lake scenery, agricultural plains, historic settlements and archaeological resources. Xingyun Lake provides opportunities for lakeside sightseeing and countryside exploration, while ancient Dian heritage gives the area particular importance for visitors interested in the early history of Yunnan.

Jiangchuan can also be combined with nearby Fuxian Lake and other central Yunnan destinations, making the district suitable for multi-day regional travel.

    Chengjiang City (澄江市)

Chengjiang City (澄江市) is one of Yuxi's most important tourism destinations. Its two major tourism identities are Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖) and the Chengjiang Fossil Site (澄江化石地).

Fuxian Lake is a deep highland lake known for its clear water, surrounding mountains and lakeside recreational environment. Luchong Village (禄充村) and other lakeside settlements provide opportunities for sightseeing, photography, cycling and leisure travel.

The Chengjiang Fossil Site (澄江化石地) and Maotian Mountain (帽天山) are particularly important for geological and scientific tourism. The fossil deposits preserve exceptionally significant Cambrian life forms and have made Chengjiang an internationally recognized destination for paleontological research and educational travel.

    Tonghai County (通海县)

Tonghai County (通海县) is one of the important historical and cultural areas of central Yunnan. It is known for traditional architecture, historic documents, inscriptions, couplets and Confucian culture.

Xiushan Mountain (秀山) and the Tonghai Confucian Temple (通海文庙) form an important part of the county's cultural tourism resources. Nagu Town (纳古镇) has a strong Hui cultural identity, while Xingmeng Mongolian Ethnic Township (兴蒙蒙古族乡) provides a distinctive Mongolian cultural landscape in southwestern China.

The county also contains Yi and Dai communities and rural areas around Qilu Lake (杞麓湖). Its combination of ancient buildings, ethnic culture, traditional food and agricultural landscapes makes Tonghai suitable for cultural walking tours and ethnic heritage exploration.

    Huaning County (华宁县)

Huaning County (华宁县) is known for hot springs, citrus agriculture and traditional pottery. Huaning Pottery (华宁陶) is an important local handicraft tradition, while Xiangbi Hot Spring (象鼻温泉) and Tonghongdian Hot Spring (通红甸温泉) provide opportunities for leisure and wellness tourism.

The county's citrus-growing areas create attractive rural landscapes, while its mountain and valley terrain provides additional opportunities for nature-based travel. Huaning is particularly suitable for travelers interested in traditional handicrafts, hot springs, agriculture and countryside experiences.

    Yimen County (易门县)

Yimen County (易门县) is strongly associated with mushroom culture and forest resources. Seasonal wild mushrooms are an important part of local agriculture, food culture and rural life.

Lüzhi River Gorge (绿汁江大峡谷) and the forest areas around the county provide opportunities for hiking, nature observation and landscape photography. The county also has a strong Yi cultural presence, with mountain villages and traditional customs adding a cultural dimension to the natural landscape.

Yimen is therefore suitable for forest tourism, hiking, seasonal food experiences, mushroom culture and Yi village exploration.

    Eshan Yi Autonomous County (峨山彝族自治县)

Eshan Yi Autonomous County (峨山彝族自治县) has an important place in the history of ethnic autonomous administration in China and is closely associated with Yi culture.

Traditional Yi Flower Drum Dance (彝族花鼓舞), Torch Festival traditions, ethnic music and village customs are important cultural tourism resources. Rural areas around Dianzhong Town (甸中镇) and the surrounding valleys combine agricultural landscapes with mountain villages.

For travelers seeking an authentic ethnic cultural experience away from heavily commercialized destinations, Eshan offers opportunities to explore traditional Yi communities, rural landscapes, festivals and mountain scenery.

Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County (新平彝族傣族自治县)

Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County (新平彝族傣族自治县) extends from the highlands of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山) into warmer river valleys. The large change in elevation gives the county some of the greatest geographical diversity in Yuxi.

The Ailao Mountains (哀牢山), Nan'en Waterfall (南恩瀑布), Shimen Gorge (石门峡) and Longxi Tusi Manor (陇西世族庄园) are among its important natural and cultural attractions. Forests, waterfalls, valleys and highland villages create strong opportunities for hiking and nature tourism.

Xinping is also an important center of Huayao Dai culture (花腰傣文化). Traditional costumes, village architecture, festivals and agricultural customs provide distinctive cultural experiences. The county can therefore combine mountain ecology with ethnic culture, making it one of the most diverse destinations in Yuxi.

Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County (元江哈尼族彝族傣族自治县)

Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County (元江哈尼族彝族傣族自治县) occupies the warm and dry Yuanjiang River Valley (元江河谷) in southern Yuxi. Its climate and landscape differ significantly from the cooler highland areas farther north.

The lower valleys are known for tropical and subtropical agriculture, particularly mango cultivation, while higher areas contain Hani and Yi villages, mountain forests and terraced agricultural landscapes.

Yuanjiang is particularly suitable for winter travel, agricultural tourism, ethnic village exploration and photography. The contrast between warm valley agriculture and cooler mountain settlements makes it one of the most geographically distinctive areas of Yuxi.

Yuxi's Main Administrative and Tourism Regions

The nine county-level divisions of Yuxi represent several major tourism landscapes. Hongta District (红塔区) and Jiangchuan District (江川区) form the central urban and cultural area, with city attractions, mountain recreation and Xingyun Lake.

Chengjiang City (澄江市) is dominated by Fuxian Lake and Chengjiang fossil heritage, while Tonghai County (通海县) and Huaning County (华宁县) are particularly important for historic culture, traditional architecture, ethnic communities, pottery and hot springs.

Yimen County (易门县) and Eshan Yi Autonomous County (峨山彝族自治县) provide stronger forest, mountain and Yi cultural experiences. Farther south, Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County (新平彝族傣族自治县) combines Ailao Mountain ecology with Huayao Dai culture, while Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County (元江哈尼族彝族傣族自治县) provides a warmer valley environment characterized by tropical agriculture and Hani, Yi and Dai communities.

This geographical structure makes Yuxi particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine several types of tourism in one regional journey. A customized trip can include plateau lakes, archaeological sites, historic towns, ethnic villages, traditional handicrafts, mountain forests, agricultural landscapes and warm river valleys.

Understanding Yuxi Through Its Administrative Divisions

The administrative structure of Yuxi reflects the city's major geographical and cultural differences. Hongta District (红塔区) and Jiangchuan District (江川区) form the central urban and lake-oriented area, while Chengjiang City (澄江市) is dominated by Fuxian Lake and the Chengjiang fossil heritage.

Tonghai County (通海县) is particularly important for historic architecture, Hui culture and Mongolian heritage, while Huaning County (华宁县) combines traditional pottery, hot springs and agricultural landscapes. Yimen County (易门县) and Eshan Yi Autonomous County (峨山彝族自治县) provide stronger forest, mountain and Yi cultural experiences.

The landscape becomes increasingly diverse toward southern Yuxi. Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County (新平彝族傣族自治县) combines Ailao Mountain ecology with Huayao Dai culture and warm river valleys, while Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County (元江哈尼族彝族傣族自治县) is characterized by its dry-hot valley climate, tropical agriculture and Hani, Yi and Dai communities.

This makes Yuxi particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine several types of tourism in one regional journey. A customized trip can connect plateau lakes, archaeological sites, historic towns, ethnic villages, traditional handicrafts, mountain forests, agricultural landscapes and warm valley scenery.
