As a “viral tourist trap” that has been complained about and fallen into by countless visitors, Yulong Snow Mountain has countless drawbacks. Based on real negative reviews from across the internet and personal experiences, today I will expose all of its flaws in detail. I will say it clearly, word by word: don’t go! don’t go! don’t go! Whether you join a tour or travel independently, going to Yulong Snow Mountain will only waste your time, waste your money, and make you suffer. It is better to spend your time on truly worthwhile places in Lijiang.

1. Extreme queues that drive people crazy — 2–4 hours is the norm, actual sightseeing is less than the waiting time

This is the most fatal and most criticized drawback of Yulong Snow Mountain, with no exception. Almost everyone who has been there has questioned their life because of the queues. None of the three cableways inside the scenic area (big cableway, middle cableway, small cableway) can escape the “crowd congestion curse.” You are surrounded by massive crowds the entire time, with no real sightseeing experience at all.

You get up before dawn, rush to the scenic area, first queue to buy entrance tickets (at least 30 minutes), then queue for the shuttle bus into the mountain (another dozens of minutes). After finally reaching the cableway station, the nightmare has only just begun — the queue for the cableway winds endlessly in circles. Even if you bought a 7:00–7:30 glacier cableway ticket, you may still not board until 8:45 or even later. During peak season, waiting 1–2 hours is completely normal.

After finally taking the cable car and reaching the summit, you only get about ten to twenty minutes of actual sightseeing, then you have to queue again to go down — queue for the cable car, queue for the shuttle bus, back and forth all day. In total, you waste 2–4 hours just waiting in line, while real sightseeing and photo time is less than 1 hour.

Even more frustrating, the scenic area buses are very easy to take incorrectly. Once you get on the wrong bus, you may lose one or two hours going back, completely disrupting your schedule. No matter the season, the area is always packed with people. At the 4680-meter Glacier Park viewpoint, you have to queue just to take photos. At Blue Moon Valley, it is completely crowded, and taking a clean photo is almost impossible. You can only struggle through the crowds, and your mood is completely drained.

According to statistics from the Lijiang Tourism Bureau, during the 2023 National Day Golden Week, the Glacier Park cableway had an average daily capacity of nearly 12,000 people, with waiting times often exceeding 2 hours — congestion comparable to the Spring Festival travel rush.

2. The snow scenery is disappointing and not as advertised — “snow mountain” becomes “bare mountain,” zero value for money

Many people go to Yulong Snow Mountain expecting a breathtaking snow-covered wonderland, but reality pours cold water on them and even makes them doubt whether they went to a real snow mountain.

Due to global warming and environmental pollution, snowfall has significantly decreased. The mountain no longer looks like the promotional images.

Throughout the year, only in deep winter (late December to early February) can you see some scattered snow, mostly at very high altitudes in the Glacier Park. If it does not snow in winter, even this small amount disappears. The mountain appears as exposed gray-brown rock, barren and desolate, with no “snow mountain” feel at all.

In other seasons (March–November), there is almost no snow. Glacier Park only shows exposed glacier remnants and bare rock with no aesthetic appeal. The so-called “snow paradise” is just a filter-enhanced illusion.

Even more disappointing, other core attractions like Yunshanping and Yak Meadow are just ordinary forests and grasslands, indistinguishable from any other mountain scenery in China, with no uniqueness at all. It is simply not worth the time or money.

Research shows that over the past 10 years, the Baishui Glacier has retreated about 27 meters per year. What once could be seen from the foot of the mountain now requires climbing much higher to glimpse. The mountain has already lost its original charm.

Many tourists complain: “Spent hundreds just to see a bare mountain — not even as good as the small hill near my home.”

3. High altitude and severe altitude sickness risk — weak people cannot handle it, with serious hidden dangers

Yulong Snow Mountain is mostly above 4000 meters, with the Glacier Park reaching 4680 meters. Altitude sickness is a nightmare for many visitors and a major reason people regret going. It can even pose life-threatening risks.

For tourists from low-altitude regions such as Southeast Asia or coastal areas, symptoms can be more severe: mild cases include dizziness, headache, chest tightness, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue; severe cases include vomiting, breathing difficulty, confusion, and even pulmonary or cerebral edema requiring emergency treatment.

There have been cases of tourists fainting due to acute altitude sickness. Some had to abandon the trip halfway and descend early. People with heart disease, hypertension, or asthma are strongly advised not to go.

Scenic staff clearly warn that people with serious heart conditions or hypertension should not take the main cableway.

Even worse, many vendors at the entrance sell “altitude sickness remedies” and oxygen-related products, claiming quick relief. In reality, these need to be taken a week in advance to work — buying them on the spot is useless and expensive.

Oxygen bottles are heavily overpriced: 20+ yuan at the base, up to 60 yuan or more on the mountain, sometimes even charged per minute (10 yuan/min). This is blatant price gouging.

At 4500 meters, some tourists even smoke while using oxygen, ignoring warning signs. Smoking increases carbon monoxide intake and worsens cardiopulmonary stress, while secondhand smoke increases risk even further.

Temperature differences are extreme, wind is strong, and even with warm clothing, catching a cold is easy. At high altitude, a cold can worsen altitude sickness dramatically. Proper rest, sleep, and nutrition before departure are essential, further increasing the “entry barrier” and risk.

4. Chaotic and unreasonable pricing, hidden fees everywhere — money gets drained, extremely poor value

The pricing system is chaotic and stacked layer upon layer, with everything charged separately and expensive overall. Average spending easily exceeds 300 yuan per person, with extremely poor experience.

Basic mandatory fees include:

• Entrance fee: 100 yuan/person
• Lijiang Ancient Town maintenance fee: 80 yuan (even if you don’t visit the old town)

Cableways are separate:

• Big cableway: 140 yuan
• Middle cableway: 65 yuan
• Small cableway: 40 yuan

Shuttle buses and Blue Moon Valley transport are also charged separately. The Blue Moon Valley shuttle is especially a trap — only a few hundred meters, yet costs 50 yuan/person under the excuse “too far to walk.” In reality, walking is completely fine and even better for viewing scenery.

There are also hidden consumption traps and low-price tour scams. Some tours advertised at 299 yuan seem cheap but require extra payments for warm clothes and oxygen, and include forced shopping stops like “silver workshops” or “local product exhibitions.” Refusing to buy may result in verbal pressure or even being abandoned.

There are also claims of “no-shopping tours” that actually include multiple shopping stops, significantly reducing sightseeing time.

Hidden fees also include guided tours, horseback riding, grass sliding, parking, etc. Low-price packages often only include entrance fees, while cableways and buses cost an additional 300–500 yuan, making the final cost much higher than advertised.

5. Expensive and terrible food, chaotic pricing, no food safety guarantee

Food on Yulong Snow Mountain is a disaster. Almost every visitor complains: expensive, bad-tasting, unhygienic, and inconsistent pricing.

A bowl of noodles costs 50+ yuan, fried rice 60–80 yuan, boiled vegetables 30 yuan, bottled water 10 yuan. The food is often low quality, pre-made, and unappetizing. Some reports even mention spoiled food.

Group tour lunches are often delayed until 4 PM and consist of a few bites of boiled vegetables — not enough to fill you at all.

Prices vary wildly between stalls, with no clear price labels, and tourists are often overcharged. Hot water is scarce, and queues are long. Visitors are strongly advised to bring their own snacks and thermos bottles.

6. Tickets are hard to buy, scalpers are everywhere, and fake tickets are common

The Glacier Park cableway tickets are extremely difficult to get. Daily quota is limited to 10,000 tickets, and even booking 7 days in advance often results in failure.

Rules are strict: repeated cancellations or failed payments can lead to account restrictions.

This creates a huge scalper market. Tickets originally priced at 140 yuan can be resold for hundreds or even thousands. Some tourists end up buying fake tickets or being scammed.

Despite enforcement efforts, scalpers still operate widely near the scenic area, hotels, and online platforms, forcing many tourists into expensive tours.

7. Endless tourist traps, constant scams, and nonstop manipulation

From the moment you plan to go, you are surrounded by scams.

Hotels and taxi drivers aggressively promote tour packages, exaggerating scenery and hiding problems. They may mislead tourists into buying bundled deals.

Drivers often collaborate with agencies to take tourists to designated shops for commission, or take longer routes to overcharge fares.

Tour guides often rely entirely on commissions, emotionally manipulating tourists into buying expensive products or paid activities. Refusal can lead to humiliation, delayed schedules, or being abandoned.

There are reports of tourists being left behind for not buying expensive jade products.

Other attractions like horseback riding or grass sliding are overpriced and low quality. “Prayer flags” and “blessing rituals” are also purely commercial traps.

8. Poor transportation, severe traffic jams, long and exhausting journeys

Although the drive from Lijiang city is under 1 hour, during peak season traffic jams can last hours. During holidays, travel time can double or triple.

Inside the scenic area, buses are limited and overcrowded, with long waits and frequent misboarding.

Parking is also difficult and expensive, forcing many tourists to park far away and walk long distances.

9. Poor ecological conditions, litter everywhere, no sense of sanctity

With increasing tourists, environmental damage is severe. Litter such as oxygen bottles, plastic bags, and food waste is everywhere.

Glacier melting and construction have damaged natural landscapes. Some tourists even smoke, litter, and damage vegetation, turning a once sacred place into a noisy, messy environment.

10. Accommodation traps, low value, easy scams

Hotels near the mountain are expensive but far from the actual scenic views. Many “mountain view hotels” are actually 20 km away.

Prices during holidays can reach 800 yuan/night, while city hostels cost 150 yuan.

Many accommodations advertise free pickup but require mandatory purchases of tour packages. Reviews are often fake, and rooms are cold, dirty, and poorly maintained, especially problematic at high altitude.

• For culture/history: Lijiang Ancient Town, Black Dragon Pool, Wangu Tower, Lion Hill, Mu Mansion
• For hidden gems: Shigu Town, Baoshan Stone City, Lugu Lake

These places have no queues, no scams, no altitude risks, and far better experiences overall.

So don’t insist on Yulong Snow Mountain anymore — avoiding this trap and choosing these real destinations is the correct way to travel in Lijiang.
