High-Risk Road Management
The most challenging section of the entire route is Degong Highway (德贡公路) on Day 10. During the rainy season, landslides, falling rocks, mudslides, fog, and temporary traffic controls are common. Riders must check real-time road conditions before departure and should never attempt dangerous crossings during severe weather. Waiting safely is always better than taking unnecessary risks.
Altitude and Temperature Management
The route crosses elevations from approximately 800 meters to more than 4,200 meters, creating extreme daily altitude changes. Temperature differences can exceed 20°C between valleys and mountain passes. Riders should always carry four-season motorcycle layers, waterproof and windproof outerwear, warm gloves, and proper protective equipment. At high-altitude passes, avoid staying exposed to cold wind for long periods.
Motorcycle Selection Requirements
Because the route includes highways, mountain roads, gravel sections, and remote trails, ADV motorcycles and dual-sport motorcycles are the most suitable choices. Street motorcycles can complete many paved sections but may face significant difficulty on gravel and off-road sections such as Pearl Lake Gravel Trail (珍珠湖土路) and challenging mountain roads around Degong Highway (德贡公路).
Highway Riding Regulations
Motorcycles traveling on Yunnan expressways must follow local regulations. Riders should travel individually, wear helmets and protective equipment, keep to the right lane, maintain safe speeds, and strictly avoid carrying passengers, speeding, using emergency lanes, or making dangerous lane changes.
Seasonal Riding Considerations
From June to September, the rainy season brings increased risks of landslides, falling rocks, heavy rain, and mountain fog. Riders should reduce speed and remain flexible with itinerary adjustments. From November to April, high mountain passes may experience frost, ice, and freezing conditions, requiring additional preparation for cold weather riding and slippery surfaces.
High-Altitude Health Management
High-altitude areas such as Shangri-La (香格里拉), Feilai Temple (飞来寺), and Baima Snow Mountain (白马雪山) require careful acclimatization. On arrival days, avoid alcohol, intense exercise, hot showers, and staying up late. Maintain good sleep, drink enough water, and carry basic altitude sickness medication. If serious altitude symptoms appear, immediately descend to a lower elevation area for safety.
