Wild mushroom dining is one of Yunnan’s most distinctive seasonal food experiences. During the rainy season, restaurants receive fresh boletes, green-headed mushrooms, jizong, ganbajun, matsutake and other varieties from surrounding mountain areas. The main dining season generally runs from June to September, with the widest selection usually available in July and August.
Kunming offers the greatest choice of specialist restaurants, while Jinning, Yimen, Nanhua and Wuding provide more regional experiences close to mushroom-producing forests and markets. In 2025, Kunming introduced its first official wild mushroom food recommendation list, covering hotpot, stir-fried dishes, mushroom rice noodles and snacks.

Juncai Wild Mushroom Hotpot
Juncai Wild Mushroom Hotpot (菌彩野生菌火锅) is one of the most visible modern mushroom restaurant brands in Kunming. It was included in the wild mushroom hotpot category of the 2025 Kunming Wild Mushroom Food Recommendation List. The brand focuses on presenting Yunnan mushrooms through standardized hotpot service, modern dining environments and clearly controlled cooking procedures.
A typical meal begins with a chicken or mushroom broth, followed by a seasonal platter that may contain boletes, green-headed mushrooms, jizong, chanterelles or cultivated mushrooms. Availability changes according to the harvest.
This is a practical choice for first-time international visitors, families and travellers who prefer an established restaurant with structured service.
Junwozi
Junwozi (菌窝子) was also selected for Kunming’s 2025 wild mushroom hotpot recommendation list. Its name can be translated loosely as “mushroom nest,” reflecting its focus on Yunnan forest ingredients and communal hotpot dining.
The restaurant is suitable for diners who want a straightforward mushroom hotpot experience rather than a formal banquet. Order a seasonal mushroom platter and allow staff to control the cooking time before tasting the broth or removing mushrooms from the pot.
Shangjunshan Yunnan Porcini Hotpot
Shangjunshan (上菌山·云南野生牛肝菌火锅) specializes in Yunnan porcini and other mountain mushrooms. It was among the seven restaurants recognized in the hotpot category of Kunming’s official 2025 recommendation list.
The restaurant is especially suitable for visitors interested in the texture and forest aroma of boletus mushrooms. Popular combinations may include a mushroom broth, porcini platter, sliced meat, seasonal vegetables and mushroom rice.
A branch in the Kunming Old Street area has been promoted for its light mushroom broth and central location, making it convenient to combine dinner with an evening walk through the historic commercial district.
Junshan Junmei Wild Mushroom Hotpot
Junshan Junmei (菌膳菌美野生菌火锅) is another restaurant recognized on Kunming’s 2025 mushroom hotpot list. It is designed around the combination of mushrooms, nourishing broth and group dining.
It is a suitable option for families or private tour groups because mushroom platters, chicken, vegetables and side dishes can be ordered according to the number of diners. Ask which mushrooms are fresh, frozen or dried, since not every species is available throughout the year.
Junhai Senlin
Junhai Senlin (菌海森林) uses a forest-inspired concept and specializes in Yunnan wild mushroom hotpot. Both the main brand and Junhai Senlin–Yimen Wild Mushroom Restaurant (菌海森林·易门野生菌府) were included in Kunming’s 2025 hotpot recommendation list.
The restaurant is useful for travellers who cannot visit Yimen but still want to sample mushroom dishes associated with the county’s famous wild mushroom culture. In addition to hotpot, seasonal stir-fried mushroom dishes may be available when supplies are sufficient.
Yuanlin Wild Mountain Mushrooms
Yuanlin Wild Mountain Mushrooms (原林野山菌) is located in Kunming’s Guanshang area, traditionally known for its concentration of mushroom restaurants. A 2026 Kunming mushroom-season guide described it as an established local restaurant serving wild mushroom soup hotpot, fresh chicken and stir-fried jianshouqing or related boletes.
This is a good choice for travellers seeking a more traditional restaurant atmosphere away from the main tourist streets. Some mushroom varieties may be ordered in smaller portions, allowing two diners to sample several types without excessive waste.
The wider Guanshang Wild Mushroom Food Street (关上野生食用菌生态美食街) remains one of Kunming’s established mushroom dining clusters.
Xingxing Wild Mushroom Manor in Jinning
Xingxing Wild Mushroom Manor (星星野生菌庄园) in Jinning District (晋宁区) offers a countryside-style alternative to central Kunming restaurants. It uses mushrooms sourced from areas such as Baofeng and Liujie, two of Jinning’s main mushroom-producing zones. A typical meal combines local mushrooms with free-range chicken broth, while stir-fried boletes may be available in season.
The restaurant works well as part of a Jinning day trip combining morning mushroom picking, a local lunch, a mushroom market and Dianchi Lake scenery.
Eight Wild Mushrooms in Nanhua
Eight Wild Mushrooms (八种野菌) is located at the Nanhua International Wild Mushroom Trading Center (南华国际野生菌交易中心). Its location makes it convenient for visitors who want to explore the trading centre and eat a mushroom meal without arranging additional transport across town.
Nanhua is one of Yunnan’s most important mushroom-food destinations. The county has developed hundreds of mushroom-related dining businesses and promotes dishes based on matsutake, jizong, ganbajun and boletes, prepared through hotpot, stir-frying, braising and other methods.
For a fuller experience, order both a hotpot and one or two separately cooked mushroom dishes. Stir-frying often highlights the aroma and texture of premium varieties more clearly than placing everything in the same soup.
Wuding Mushroom Restaurants
Wuding County (武定县) is particularly known for combining Wuding free-range chicken with local wild mushrooms. The chicken is slowly cooked into a rich broth before seasonal mushrooms are added, creating one of the county’s signature dishes.
Official local tourism information has highlighted several mushroom-dining names and areas:
Yuanlin Wild Mushroom Hotpot
Yuanlin Wild Mushroom Hotpot (原林野生菌火锅) focuses on locally sourced mushrooms and Wuding chicken. It is one of the county’s representative mushroom restaurants promoted through the development of mushroom-themed tourism.
Heshunyuan Wild Mushroom Hotpot
Heshunyuan Wild Mushroom Hotpot (和顺园野生菌火锅) is another local restaurant associated with Wuding’s mushroom-food industry. It is suitable for experiencing the traditional chicken-and-mushroom combination after visiting Lion Mountain or the county mushroom market.
Yejunxiang Mushroom Food Street
Yejunxiang (夜菌香) is promoted as a mushroom-themed dining street rather than a single restaurant. It is useful for groups wanting to compare several local businesses and explore Wuding’s evening food atmosphere.
Yimen Mushroom Restaurant District
Yimen County (易门县) has developed a mature mushroom-dining sector, particularly along Xihuan Road, where specialist restaurants serve both mushroom hotpot and complete mushroom banquets. During the 2026 mushroom season, tourist coaches were reported stopping directly outside restaurants along this road as visitors arrived specifically to sample local mushrooms.
A mushroom hotpot is the easiest choice for first-time visitors. A full mushroom banquet is better for larger groups because it may include several cooking techniques, such as stir-frying, braising, steaming, soup and mushroom rice.
Yimen can be visited on a day trip from Kunming, although an overnight stay gives more time to explore its trading centre, forest areas and seasonal festival activities.
What to Order
For two to four diners, a balanced mushroom meal may include:
- A free-range chicken and mushroom hotpot
- One seasonal mushroom platter
- Stir-fried ganbajun or boletus
- Jizong mushroom fried rice or mushroom rice
- Seasonal vegetables and a simple cold dish
Ordering every available mushroom in one pot is not always the best approach. Different varieties have different textures, flavours and cooking requirements. Premium mushrooms such as ganbajun, matsutake or jizong may be better appreciated in a separately cooked dish.
Best Time to Visit
The most rewarding restaurant period is generally from June to September, especially after several days of rainfall. During July and August, restaurants usually offer the widest choice, but popular establishments may require reservations during evenings, weekends and mushroom festivals.
Outside the rainy season, restaurants may use dried, frozen, cultivated or preserved mushrooms. Ask whether each advertised variety is fresh before ordering.
Mushroom Dining Safety
Choose an established restaurant that separates mushroom varieties and controls cooking times. Never remove mushrooms from the pot before staff confirm they are fully cooked.
Wild mushrooms should be professionally identified and thoroughly heated. Visitors should not eat unfamiliar mushrooms raw or undercooked, and alcohol is best avoided during a wild mushroom meal. Possible poisoning symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion or hallucinations; urgent medical attention is required if symptoms appear.
Restaurant branches, menus and opening hours can change, so confirm the exact location and operating status before travelling.
