Wenshan Climate

Wenshan climate features a plateau monsoon climate zone. Due to its low latitude tempered by its high elevation, Wenshan has a mild humid subtropical climate with short, mild, dry winters and warm, rainy summers. Wenshan is situated in the so called 'Valley of Eternal Spring'. Because it is on a plateau, temperatures are quite constant throughout the year, with more precipitations during the summer months.

Wenshan has clear dry and humid seasons. May to October is the rainy season gathering over eighty percent of Wenshan's rainfall throughout the year. Most of the region has a favorable climate without winter chilliness and summer heat. Average temperatures in January and July are respectively 6.5-13.5C (43.7-56.3F) and 17-28.5C (62.6-83.3F).

The warm season lasts for 5.6 months, from March 29 to September 17, with an average daily high temperature above 77°F. The hottest day of the year is June 16, with an average high of 81°F and low of 66°F. The cool season lasts for 2.3 months, from November 28 to February 8, with an average daily high temperature below 65°F. The coldest day of the year is January 1, with an average low of 41°F and high of 61°F.

Wenshan only has two seasons in aspect of weather and climate, wet season and dry season. The warm season lasts for 5.6 months, from late March to early September while the cool season lasts for 2.3 months, from late November to early February. Most of Wenshan Prefecture has no severe cold in winter and no severe heat in summer. In Wenshan City, the wet season is warm, humid, and overcast and the dry season is comfortable and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 41°F to 81°F and is rarely below 33°F or above 88°F.

  • Spring (March through May)
    Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel warm. Highs range from 83.7°F (28.7°C) and 67°F (19.4°C) with warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is somewhat common with 3 to 8 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the slowest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for deals.
  • Summer (June through August)
    The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are comfortable. These months see the most precipitation with 10 to 12 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the second busiest season for tourism in Wenshan, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly more.
  • Fall (September through November)
    Fall daily highs range from 81.5°F (27.5°C) and 65.2°F (18.4°C), which will feel comfortable given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 3 to 9 days per month. Tourism is the busiest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be higher priced.
  • Winter (December through February)
    Weather is too cold this time of year in Wenshan to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 72.4°F (22.4°C) and 52.9°F (11.6°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 1 to 2 times per month. These times of year are fairly slow with tourists.

What to Pack

Wenshan enjoys a subtropical plateau monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 16.4℃, the highest temperature in summer (June-September) does not exceed 30℃, and the lowest temperature in winter (December-March) can reach below zero. There is abundant rainfall, with an annual average rainfall of 1206.8mm, long sunshine duration and a great temperature difference between day and night, which can reach more than 10℃.

  • Wet Season: The warm and wet season lasts for 5.6 months, from late March to early September, with an average daily high temperature above 77°F. At this time, the daytime temperature is high and the long-time sunshine. Only cool short-sleeved clothes and trousers are needed, but you must also bring sunclocks. The temperature difference between day and night is large  in summer, so it is necessary to pack a coat. Rain gears are necessary in this season.
  • Dry Season: The cool and dry season lasts for 2.3 months, from November 28 to February 8, with an average daily high temperature below 65°F. Dry season enjoy most of the sunny days in the year around. It is the low season for tourism, if you travel to Wenshan at that time, pack thick clothes like sweater, jacket and down coat, etc.

The Best Time to Visit Wenshan

Based on the tourism score, the best times of year to visit Wenshan City for warm-weather activities are from late March to mid May and from late September to mid October, but it rains a  lot, you should take the umbrella and coats, as well as sunblocks.

Travel Tips for Visiting Wenshan

Try to avoid the peak holidays such as Chinese Spring Festival (usually in late Jan or early Feb.), International Labor Day (May 01 to 03) and National Day (Oct 01-07). Spring Festival and the National Day golden week are the most crowded time for travelling. 

Peak Season and Low Season

The busiest month for tourism in Wenshan, China is October, followed by January and June. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Wenshan in February. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.
