Cultural Inheritance and Participation
Learning and Inheritance
Xiong Yueqing (熊岳清), male, of the Yao ethnic group (蓝靛瑶), was born in 1951 in Huaji Village (滑基村), Lina Village Committee (里那村委会), Dongbo Township (洞波乡), Funing County (富宁县), Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (文山壮族苗族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). He is respectfully called “Shifu” or “Mo Gong” (么公) by locals and is recognized as one of the most important bearers of Yao culture in the region. Since 1961, he apprenticed under Xiong Guangliang (熊光亮) from his village, learning Yao ritual ceremonies and traditional knowledge. He has mastered the rituals, chants, and customs of the Yao people and has become a guardian of local Yao heritage.
Presiding Over the Dujie (度戒) Ritual
As a “Mo Gong,” Xiong Yueqing presides over the traditional Yao Dujie ceremony. Dujie is a significant rite of moral education for Yao youth, requiring them to uphold the “Ten Precepts,” such as refraining from cursing heaven and earth, insulting parents, or deceiving teachers and friends. This ritual not only transmits moral values but also strengthens community bonds.
Cultural Activities and Promotion
Xiong Yueqing actively participates in cultural events, promoting Yao culture through organizing and engaging in rituals like the Dujie. By doing so, he passes traditional knowledge to younger generations and helps sustain the Yao cultural legacy.
