The Torch Festival is an important traditional festival of the Yi ethnic group, serving as a stage for the inheritance of Yi primitive religious culture and a platform for the concentrated display of Yi song and dance, costumes, and food culture. The priests play an indispensable role in it, serving as important organizers and implementers of the entire Torch Festival activities. He Yinggui was born into a prominent family of “Xiangtong,” the important presider of Yi primitive religious rituals, as the 11th generation inheritor of the “Xiangtong” priest. Since the age of 7, he has been studying ritual ceremonies with his father, experiencing various ritual occasions firsthand. Through learning by observation, oral transmission, and practical experience, he quickly mastered the Yi primitive religious ritual ceremonies.
For over 20 years, he has independently presided over hundreds of ritual activities and organized the “Xiangtong” performance team to participate in the grand Torch Festival activities of the Yi ethnic group dozens of times. He is proficient in sheepskin drum dance and possesses folk performance materials and hexagram books passed down from his ancestors. He has more than ten apprentices, among whom disciples such as Luo Jinhua, He Qiaoshou, Li Wanqiao, He Changshun, and He Zhiqiang have certain prestige locally.

Luo Yufang(罗玉芳) was born in 1951, and she is Yi ethnic minority, lived in Guantun Township, Yao’an County(姚安县关屯乡) Chuxiong City.
Since childhood, she has suffered from poliomyelitis(小儿麻痹症). She can not walk and knows words. At the age of 8, she learned embroidery from his mother and learnt to cut patterns with the old people in the village. By the age of 12, he had a knitting job recognized in Mayou(马游) area. As she grew older, her craftsmanship grew better. Many local girls were asked her to make wedding or festival clothes. Slowly, she was able to make Yi ethnic minority’s clothes to support her life. Her works were collected by the Chuxiong State People’s Committee, the Yao’an County People’s Committee exhibition of Chuxiong Museum. In 1987, her works were collected by the Provincial Mass Art Museum and sent to Beijing for exhibition.
She is the first batch of inheritor of provincial intangible cultural heritage.

Daguokou Yi Ethnic Culture Protection Area in Chuxiong City, Chuxiong

The Wanjiaba Ancient Tombs are located on the banks of the Qinglong River, 3 km south of Chuxiong City. They are the ancient tomb sites of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. They have a history of more than 2,000 years. This was discovered in the farm fundamental construction in March 1974. The Yunnan Provincial Cultural Relics Task Force began to excavate the cultural relics in May 1975. From October of the same year to January 1976, it was officially excavated. The excavation area was 3,000 square meters with a total of 79 ancient tombs. The unearthed cultural relics were up to 1,245 pieces, of which 5 pieces of bronze drums are the most precious and were named as “Wanjiaba-type Bronze Drum(万家坝型铜鼓)”. It has been measured by “Carbon 14” and has been around for 2,600 years, which are the earliest bronze drum discovered in the world.

Chuxiong is 163 kilometers away from Kunming and can be directly reached by car. After arriving in Chuxiong City, it is very convenient to get to Wanjiaba Village by car.

Yiren Ancient Town
Yiren Ancient Town is an outcome of modernization, built in 2005. Chuxiong Confucius Temple
Chuxiong Confucius Temple is located in Lucheng Primary School, Middle Street, Chuxiong City, Yunnan Province. Chuxiong Confucius Temple was built in the Yuan Dynasty, it was relocated in the Ming Dynasty. Chuxiong was located at the important site of the Southern Silk Road. In 1987, the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government designated Chuxiong Confucius Temple as provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit.
Futa Pagoda Park
Futa Pagoda Park is located in Dongshan Mountain, Lucheng, Chuxiong City, donated by social members who are mobilized by the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference of Chuxiong Prefecture, which was built in the ancient pagoda site of the Ming Dynasty (later destroyed).

On October 20, 2020, the Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission issued the “Environmental Impact Assessment Information Announcement for the Intercity Railway Network Planning and Revision of the Central Yunnan Urban Agglomeration”. The plan clarifies that the central Yunnan urban agglomeration’s intercity railway network plan will take Kunming as the core, forming an overall layout of one ring, four shots and five connections + two city lines. Located 15 kilometers west from the Deer City in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Zixi Mountain, a provincial class scenic spot in Chuxiong includes Zixi Mountain and the Town of Deer, with an area of 850 km2.
Zixi Mountain is famed as “the first mountain in the central part of Yunnan” since ancient times. Contemporary specialists call it “the natural park”. within 160 square kilometers, there are thousands kind of plants, many kinds of animals and Buddhist buildings.
The park is a picturesque resort making tourists linger about. The green pine forest is stretching to heaven and the limpid streamlets are running through the mountain.

What’s more, it was once a gathering place for Buddhists. Lots of temples had been built so as to attract the bonzes to come and cultivate here. The Zixi Mountain also abounds with camellias. According to researches, the camellias were cultivated even 1000 years ago in the mountain. The camellias are the second to none in Yunnan in the varieties of the species and colors. Camellia in Yunnan exceeds all in China, and camellia in Zixi exceeds all in Yunnan as a saying goes.
With the altitude of 2000 meters, Zixi Mountain is considered as “the first mountain in the central part of Yunnan” since ancient times. It is considered to be the holy land for Buddhism even when it was in the Song Dynasty. There are thousands kind of plants, many kinds of animals and Buddhist buildings. Records say many famous historical hierarches had been cultivated them here. In the Ming and Qing Dynasty, Zixi became a famous Buddhism place. Today, there are 68 relics of Buddhism temples and 21 Buddhism towers remained here. The environment is quiet and the scenery picturesque too, with the green pine forest stretch to horizon, and red azalea decorated in it, limpid streamlets running through the mountain.
Plant
There are more than 202 species of higher plants in 65 genus and over 107 species of animals. Actually, it’s a world of plants and animals.
Camellia:
The Zixi Mountain also abounds with camellia. According to the research, there were more than 60 camellia plants in the area which are believed to be cultivated 200 years ago in the mountain. The history of the cultivation, the variety of the species and the enrichment of the color of the camellia here are the second to none in Yunnan. There’s a saying: Camellia in Yunnan exceeds all in China, and camellia in Zixi exceeds all in Yunnan.
Torch Festival
There is a saying here says that if you don’t dance during the torch festival, it will remain a great pity in your life. From here we can figure out the importance of the local torch festival. Besides the open fire party, an activity name “carry bride” is also very interesting. 10 girls are chosen from the crowd to be the brides and covered with traditional red head shawls. 10 young men are also chosen from the crowds to be the bridegrooms. Then the brides and the grooms are asked to dance together for some time. Then, the brides are placed in a different order and the grooms are asked to find their original brides. Those who find out the correct one may carry her away. And those who fail to find the right one will be fined to make performance in public with their face covering with inks.
Origin of famous flowers in Yunnan province£ºOf the eight most famous flowers in Yunnan Province (namely camellia, orchid, azalea, yulan, gentian, yingchun and green plush fungus), seven can find their origin here in Zixi Mountain.
How to get there:
Minibuses go form Chuxiong to Zixi every 30 minutes at the Hongqi Hotel and it is very convenient for the visitors. Tourist facilities are well developed in the Zixi Mountain area. You can spend about RMB 80 staying here for a day and a night. Communication will not be a problem since the telecom signals cover all the mountain areas here.

Chuxiong City(楚雄市) is the capital of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture and the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Chuxiong City is located in the middle of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, it connects Kunming in the east, Dali in the west and Pu’er in the south, 152 kilometers away from Kunming, 179 kilometers from Dali. National Highway No.320, National Highway No.108, Hangrui Expressway G56 as well as GuangDa(Guangtong广通-Dali) Railway run through Chuxiong City.
Although there is no airport in Chuxiong City, transportation between Dali City and Chuxiong City is extremely convenient. You can take long-distance bus or train from Dali City to Chuxiong City.
With a distance of about 180 kilometers, tourists can go from Dali City to Chuxiong City by long-distance bus. There are few long-distance buses departing from Dali Express Bus Station, 4 daily buses at most.
