A brief introduction of Dongba Culture Museum

Dongba Village is within the Yushui Village Scenic Area that is a Naxi theme park with a museum, gardens, ponds, and a stream. There are a few old Naxi teachers teaching about the ancient Naxi hieroglyphic writing system, the Naxi religious system called Dongba, and Naxi culture and history. The Naxi people in the region lived in a number of towns and participated in the regional and international trade of the Chama Road that is also called the Southern Silk Road. In exchange for tea (cha in Chinese pinyin), silk and other products from the Yunnan region and the rest of China, the Chinese imported horses (in Chinese) and other things from Tibet. So the trade route was called the Chama Road. In this area, the Naxi people who had their own distinct language developed a complex writing system of their own using hieroglyphics instead of Chinese characters. They used this writing system to transmit their religious beliefs, history, and legends. During this visit to this combination of school, museum and little theme park, visitors can gain an appreciation of this ancient culture that is almost extinct.

The Dongba Village site isn’t well known, but it might be one of the best places to go in the Lijiang area to learn about Naxi culture and writing. This is because there are old teachers there who teach the old language to a few students. There is also a museum. However, despite its name, it isn’t an old Naxi Village. It is a new theme park. People interested in learning about the Naxi culture may also want to visit Joseph Rock’s old residence in nearby Yuhu Village. Joseph Rock (1884 – 1962) was an Austrian-American botanist, linguist and explorer who lived in the area for a long time early in the last century and who put together a Dongba language dictionary.
Another good point of a trip to Dongba Village is the special Yushui Village Scenic Area that is rated 4A in China. The theme park area stretches about half a kilometer by 300 meters. There are gardens, some natural parkland, ponds, and a spring. The spring is reputed to have very pure water, and it is said that Joseph Rock liked to drink the water from the spring.

Naxi culture is special because the people are less modernized and the people developed a writing system, a music style, and a religion different than the majority of Chinese. The Naxi people created a unique and distinctive ethnic culture. Perhaps some of the distinctiveness arose from the wide-ranging contact that the Naxi had with other Asian cultures. The Naxi developed two writing systems. They had a phonetic system called Geba. They also developed a hieroglyphic (pictorial) writing system that is said to be the world’s sole surviving hieroglyphic writing system. Hieroglyphs were used in China and Egypt millennia ago. The ancient Maya had such as system, and more recently the people of Easter Island used such a system of writing. However, these other civilizations died out. The Naxi Dongba writing system almost died out too. After 1949, the Communist government attempted to eradicate both their religion and their writing systems. However, about 30 old Naxi still can read the remaining old manuscripts. There is now an attempt to preserve and teach the system of writing that is said to be beautiful and poetic, and younger people are learning the language at the Dongba Village site.

About the Dongba Culture and Naxi People

The Naxi People, or Naxi National Minority, is a minority with a long history and excellent culture. They mainly live in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province. With a population of a little more than 3000,000, the Naxi group has been worldwide known for its own prominent and unique Dongba culture. That’s like a miracle that such a small ethnic minority created magnificent culture.

Dongba Culture

Dongba Culture actually is the culture of the Naxi People because Dongba Religion is the main religion believed by them. The culture is mainly about the language and sculpture, or architecture. There are over 1,400 picture-like characters and symbols in Dongba literature that are still used by nowadays, which makes great contributions to the culture study of mankind and the publicity of Lijiang City. On August 30, 2003, the Dongba classical literature was listed as a written world heritage by UNESCO.

The Dongbaism believers mainly worship the great nature and the ancestors of nation, and sometimes also worship the ghost and spirit. The priests of Dongba are the most important inheritors of Dongba culture. Every one of them was a wizard, doctor, painter, scholar, musician and craftsman simultaneously. The etiquettes and religious rites of the Naxi people are omnipresent and diversified as many as about 30 kinds of forms. In the historical changes, the thoughts and religious traditions of Dongba culture have already seeped to Naxi people’s daily life at each aspect, especially at the heaven worshipping ceremony, the traditional wedding and funeral.

The Dongba characters, also named Naxi pictographic characters, is one of the oldest hieroglyphics and the only hieroglyphic writing with complete system in the world. There are all together around 1500 commonly used graphics and text, which are beautiful in forms and structures. The more than 20,000 scriptures of Dongbaism are written in Dongba characters, with contents about philosophy, history, religion, medicine and art. Therefore, the scriptures are regarded as the encyclopaedia of Naxi. The translations of various languages are also kept in the museums and libraries of 17 countries and regions.

The current situation of Dongba culture makes people worried. Since ancient times, Lijiang has been the cradle of Naxi Dongba culture. Other Naxi areas include Northwest Yunnan, Southwest Sichuan and Southeast Tibet. Unfortunately, the Dongba traditions in Lijiang are impacted greatly by the modern development and are nearly instinct. Except a handful of experts and scholars, and a few Dongba elders, most people know very little about the Dongba culture. It only exists in the museum and library now.

History of Dongba Culture Museum

The Naxi people are a Tibetan-Burmese people. People say that perhaps the Naxi settlers around Lijiang were driven south to the area by the Mongol tribesmen who conquered China. The Mongols founded the Yuan Dynasty in the year 1271. The Naxi towns were astride the Chama trade route, so they had contact with people who passed through including the Tibetans, the Hans, and the Bais who lived in the Dali area. Baisha Town about 6 kilometers to the south of the theme park was one of the major old towns.
There are now about 200,000 Naxi people living in Lijiang County. They live in other places too. About 300,000 people still speak the Naxi language in China. In the 1960s and 1970s, the government tried to eradicate their religion, traditions and writing system. Thousands of documents were destroyed. By the late 1990s, only some old people could read and write their language.

In 1997, UNESCO put three districts in Lijiang on their World Heritage List. Baisha Town just to the south of the Dongba Village area is one of the special districts. UNESCO explained that the three ancient towns of the Naxi are important to preserve because they are in a dramatic landscape where the cultures of the different peoples blended to “produce an urban landscape of outstanding quality” over many centuries. The towns were a key commercial and strategic site.
After 1997, the city of Lijiang became a major tourist attraction in China drawing millions of visitors annually. People came to see the Naxi people and the old districts. For foreign tourists and foreigners living in China, the county of Lijiang became popular as a hiking area with spectacular natural scenery and accommodations available at a variety of hostels, hotels, and inns. Tiger Leaping Gorge became known as one of China’s best hiking places.
The J.W.V. company built the Yushui Village theme park in 2001. In 2006, it was designated as a State-4A scenic attraction. Now there are about 10 students learning the language, and musicians play Naxi music there.

Why Is the The First Bend of Yangtze River So Special?

The Yangtze River Bend, as its name denotes, is the spot where the south running river suddenly turns northward due to changes in the shape of the nearby mountain ranges which form a mammoth V shape at this spot.

The First Bend of Yangtze River in Lijiang
The First Bend of Yangtze River in Lijiang

With the gradual deposit of fertile soil at this spot, a village slowly came into being, now called Shigu Town, meaning “stone drum” in Chinese. Since ancient times, this town has been important, linking Tibet with the outside world. Here Tibetan people bring their quality fell, hide and herbal medicine and take home tea, salt, cloth and other necessities. When market day comes, the town is incredibly crowded and noisy. In Shigu Town, gold sands of the first gulf in Yangtze River which is located in the west Lijiang City turn the direction 180 degree here, hurtle to open the mountain layer after layer to obstruct, turn around to go up north again and then the east go to. This gorgeous scene had become famous as the First Bend of the Yangtze River.

The river is broadened at the bend and flows slowly. The famous historical event, such as “Zhuge Liang’s Crossing the Lushni River in the Fifth Month”, Kublai Khan’s “Crossing the River on Leather Rafts” all chose this place as a ferry. In May 1936, the Red Army to leaders He Long, Ren Bishi and Guan Xianying led the Second Route Red Army to march north, crossing the river also at this place. At present, a splendid memorial tablet marking the victorious crossing is erected here.

Where Is The First Bend of Yangtze River?

The First Bend of the Yangtze River is located on the north side of the highway leading from Dali to Lijiang, about 70 km. from lijiang Town. The upper reaches of the Yangtze River is named the Jinsha River, which originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Jinsha River flowed southward along the Hengduan Mountain ranges and was forced to the turn to north because of the Alpine movements which caused changes in the earth’s physiognomy.

On the hill as the river bends stands the small Shigu (stone drum) Township. It is so called because of the existence of a drum-like stone tablet. It is 1.5 m. in diametre, 70 mm. in thickness, being the memorial tablet marking the victory of territorial expansion of Lijiangs local ruler Baichuan, surnamed Mu, in the 27th to 40th year of the Jiaqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1548-1561). It is one of the earliest stone tablets hitherto found at Lijiang.

The surface of river of Shigu ferry crossing is broad, the river flows gently which is suitable for the ferry, has always been a place of great military importance. It is said that during the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang pacified Nam Trung, “cross the Lushui in May” (Jinsha river called Lushui Water in ancient time); In A.D. 1253, Kublai Khan led his army to cross exposure and raft through the Jinsha River, unified Yunnan. The Second Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army led by He Long, Ren Bishi and Xiao Ke was crossing from here in April 1936 and proceeded northward to anti-Japanese. After the liberation, in the hillside behind the Shigu tablet, there built the 8.1 meters high monument “the red army long march ferry monument”, standing in the hillside, imposing and solemn. It is one of Yunnan province key cultural relics protection units. Pailou (decorated archway) in the front of monument is Memorial Room of the Red Army River Crossing, where display of the legacy during red army long march, will make you know more vividly about the great army more than half a century ago.

Legend of The First Bend of Yangtze River

The place where Jinsha turned back became the Yangtze River First Bend.

Another version is that: three sisters of Nujiang River, Lancang River and Jinsha River who don’t want to marry the person in the west so they held out on their parents, secretly run from home. Beautiful clever Jinsha invited two elder sisters to the east China sea. Parents learned after three girls run away, very angry, so they sent two brothers Yulong and Haba hold up on their way to the east China sea. Nujiang and Lancang saw two elder brothers blocked their way in Shasongbi village, they thought that their brothers were too strong for them so they dared not go forward, then change their mind that did not go to the east China sea. They chose the south road but could not persuade Jinsha, they had to rush angrily. Jinsha saw two sisters gone, but her determination to the east China sea still remained in the heart so that she resolutely turned straight at her brother’s way, eventually broke through the obstacles and went into the east China sea. Where she turned formed the famous “the Yangtze River First Bend” landscape.

Overview of Shuhe Old Town

Shuhe is in the former commercial district known for its leather and fur artisans. Known locally as Longquan village, Shuhe is thought to be the birthplace of the eminent Mu family of the Naxi minority ethnic group. A walk along it narrows streets and alleyways affords a glimpse into a previous era.

Where Is Shuhe Old Town?

About five kilometers north from Lijiang Ancient Town, Shuhe Old Town, the geographical center of scenic spots of Lijiang, is one of the oldest habitats of Lijiang and well-preserved town on the Ancient Tea Route.

History of Shuhe Old Town

Shuhe was built along the mountainside and faces the river. There are two rivers on each side of it that go through the whole, village. Channels were dug so that the water would pass by each house. Rivers, channels and roads make a dense web and link the town in a tight structure just like a honeycomb. People use stones in the nearby mountains to make the walls of their houses. Compared to those in the ancient old town, the houses here are even more natural. Right in the middle of Shuhe, there is a square market, which is called Shuhe Square Market. Observing closely, you will find that the one in the old town was built totally according to this one. Walking in Shuhe, you will have the feeling that this ancient town of Shuhe is the model of the Old Town while the Old Town is tension and development of Shuhe.

Shuhe is also called Town of Springs. About one hundred meters north of the Shuhe Square Market, there is the waterhead of the streams here. It is “Jiuding Dragon Pool”. The water is clean and transparent; the fountains spurt out day and night. The Naxi hold the spring as holy. Beside it, people built a Longquan Temple (Dragon Spring Temple) to enshrine and worship the founder of cobbler handicraft.

Qinglong Bridge, built of stone pieces, measuring about 25 meters long (27 yards), 4.5 meters wide (4.9 yards) and 4 meters high (13 feet), was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Among the countless old stone bridges in Lijiang, it is regarded as ‘the First’. The deck has been pock-marked over hundreds of years, revealing the solemn passing of history.

Long Pool (Dragon Pool)

There is a deep pool at the end of the street, called Long Pool (Dragon Pool), from which the overflowing water winds through the village, and the bubbling sound can be heard miles away. Fishes in the pool are appreciated by every tourist, because they are close to people. When you throw food to them, they will fight each other for it. Beside the pool lies a broken stele. When knocked by a stone, it sends out a sharp and light ringing sound, which is very pleasant. Above Long Pool is a temple called ‘Sansheng Palace’. Standing against the wooden railings, you can have a bird’s eye view of the village presenting a poetic rural idyll.

The Nayun Ancient Town of Menglian Dai, Lahu and Wa Nationality Autonomous County, Pu’er City, retains the traditional layout, and preserves a relatively intact architecture of the local official and religious buildings, which stands as an excellent representative of Nayun’s Dai architecture as the cultural characteristics of the Dai nationality and Han nationality are combined in harmony.

What are features of Nayun Ancient Town

Nayun Ancient Town in Menglian County, Puer

The Dai folk houses of Nayun have also kept the local religious and ethnical characters. Each scenic element in the ancient town embodies a spiritual expression of the Dai people living in a certain area, displaying the unique appeal of Nayun, and conveying the historical, aesthetical, economic and cultural values of the ancient town.

Nayun is a mysterious town in the south of Yunnan. One of the palaces with the highest hierarchy for Dai ethnic group in both China and Southeast Asia used to be situated here.

There is a saying “the north of Yunnan is famous for the Dayan Ancient Town in Lijiang and the south of Yunnan is well-known for Nayun Town in Menglian Dai, Lahu and Va Autonomous County.” However, owing to the inconvenient transportation, Nayun didn’t get the focus of public at an early time, leading to the well-preserved festival featured with Dai style.

Shenyu Festival: the only carnival on the water in the world

Shenyu means sacred fish literally. The carnival on the water is held every April and May beside Nanlei River which runs through the town. “Shenyu Festival” is the second most hilarious festival for Dai people except for the Water-Sprinkling Festival. There is a saying about the festival. Long time ago, Dai people lived a hard life. The Buddha dispatched the fiddlehead and fish to the place where Dai people live. The fish propagated in the river where the fiddlehead overgrew, which had improved people’s life. In order to memorize the approach of the happiness, Shenyu Festival has been inherited since then.

Where is Nayun Ancient Town?

Nayun Town is the downtown area of Menglian Dai, Lahu and Va Autonomous County, Simao City, Yunnan province. “Nayun” is homophonic of Dai language, meaning inner city. The central area of the town is about sixty km from the border between China and Myanmar. The altitude ranges from 950 meters to 2,239 meters here. With the average temperature of 19.6℃, it is the last remaining ancient city of Dai ethnic group in China.

History of Nayun Ancient Town

Built in 1289, the city is the best-preserved ritual architecture group of Dai in the system of appointing national minority hereditary headmen. A government office in feudal headman system of Dai used to be one of the palaces of Dai with the highest hierarchy in both China and Southeast Asia. Due to the relationship by affinity with the neighboring headmen, the headmen here were believed to have genetic relationship with the public in Southeast Asia, which had won the town eminent status and high reputation. “Dai people living in Myanmar and other countries in Southeast Asia pay religious homage to the town annually. Some women take off their shoes when they arrive at the door of the palace. With naked feet and bowed head, they pay respects to the supreme god in their heart. Nayuan Ancient Town has a kind of sense of identity and belonging for them.”

Local people often cut apart a grass meadow and use it as a raft so that they can catch fishes and shrimps on it; some people even dig a small hole in a meadow and put a fishing rod through the hole to go fishing which is very interesting.

Every mid-to-late April is the most beautiful season in the reserve; you will love the sea of blooming Beihai orchids there. The meadows turn yellow in autumn but are still amazing to see.
