Later they knew that a man and a woman must sacrifice their lives to jump off a cliff, splattering their blood on the drought devil to save the people. The two young chose to exchange the green mountains and clear waters with their life. So the place where they lived before became waterfalls forever existing in the world.

According to the legend, a venerable Buddhist monk has taken the way to Tibet to carry out a pilgrimage with his goat in the countryside. After 3 years of the whole trip, they stayed in the valley of Ringha where the goat refused to continue the way any further more. The monk then counts that it had found there as a sacred place, and decided to build a temple right there on the hill in the middle of this marvelous valley.

Zhiziluo was the government seat of Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture before 1974. In history, Zhiziluo was a pivot along the Nujiang River and an important courier station on the Tea and Horse Road which connected Nujiang with central China in the past. Nowadays, it is often called “the city of memory”. It is a place where old architectures are well preserved and maintained which could give you a vintage tour back to the 1980s.
Zhiziluo village is under jurisdiction of Pihe Nu Township(匹河怒族乡) of Fugong County of Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, which is located in the east of Pihe township, adjacent to Lanping Bai Pumi Autonomous County(兰坪白族普米族自治县) in the east, Puluo village(普洛村) in the south, Jiajiu village(架究村) in the west and Shava village(沙瓦村) in the north, 44 kilometers away from Fugong county.
Zhiziluo, means “a good place” in Lisu language. More than one thousand years ago, the descendants of one Wuman Tribe of Diqiang, crossed the Biluo snow mountain from the Lancang river and reached the “Zhiziluo” for settlement. In the past, it only took about 1 day from ancient Nanzhao Kingdom(Dali) to Gaoligong Mountain via Zhiziluo and Biluo Snow Mountain, then Zhiziluo became an important post and market on the ancient tea horse road.
Due to its special location, it was once the core city of the Nujiang basin. The seat of Nujiang prefecture and Bijiang county were located here, becoming the most prosperous political and economic center of nujiang state. On December 25, 1986, the Bijiang county, with a newly built building on a hillside was abruptly abandoned because it had been analysed by experts from the geology department that extensive landslides were possible in this area. So the name “Bijiang county” disappeared from the map of China forever.
Zhiziluo is a small village located in northwest Yunnan’s Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. What makes Zhiziluo unique is its old-fashioned look which arouses people’s nostalgic feelings. The octagonal library is a must-see attraction in Zhiziluo. Today it sits unused, its doors propped open so random tourists can climb the stairs to reach its wrap-around balconies. The slogans in the 1980s and the images of Chairman Mao are still posted on the walls in the library, just like what old movies show.
Much of the local populace are of the Lisu and Nu minorities and many of them practice Christianity. An old church is one of the few non-residential buildings put to use on a regular basis and is still a place of worship for those left in the village. In recent years, especially after the film “Zhiziluo” hit the screen, more and more tourists are attracted by its well-protected architectures. It is reported that there is a high-end tourism project under construction in Zhiziluo now.
There is no direct long-distance bus to Zhiziluo from Kunming and Dali. Tourists can only transfer to at Liuku. There is direct night bus from Kunming to Fugong. For the last leg of the journey you will need to arrange a ride in a minibus from one of the Liuku locals. Bargain hard, this should be very inexpensive. Keep in mind the final push from Liuku to Zhiziluo is another 108 kilometers and depending on road and weather conditions, can easily take four or more hours.
There are several agritainments which can provide accommodation for tourists.
▪ Do take a camera. The scenery is extremely beautiful there
▪ Respect the customs of ethnic minorities and avoid disturbing the lives of local people.
▪ Grab your rain gear. There’s a lot of rain during the rainy season from May to August.

Lufeng is nicknamed the Home Town to Dinosaurs. Back in 1938, Bian Meinian(卞美年), one of China’s famous geologists, and Yang Zhongjian(杨钟健), one of China’s renowned paleontologists, discovered whole clusters of rare dinosaur fossils as well as other fossils of extinct plants and animals from ancient times. They are named “Lufeng reptiles and dinosaur clusters”. In the same year, the complete skeleton of a dinosaur was unearthed. Ever since then, the Lufeng dinosaur became famous. There are dozens of other dinosaur fossils which were excavated in the following years. It is found that the distribution of dinosaur fossils extended for 10 sq.km (6. 2 sq.miles), with Lufeng being at the center. It is believed that dinosaurs found here are the best vertebrate fossils that are the most primitive, the oldest, with the most varieties and in their most complete form. China’s first assembled dinosaur for study purposes was unearthed in Lufeng, and it has been dated to have more than 180 million years.
There are some kinds of unearthed dinosaur fossils, which are displayed in the Lufeng World Dinosaur Museum. At the end of 2008, the newly constructed Jurassic Park was finished, adding a more scientific and trendy atmosphere to the ancient dusty place.
At the north side of Lufeng County, about 9 km (5.6 miles), away is the site where the fossil, one of China’s most ancient homo sapiens, was discovered. In May 1975, archaeologists found a tooth fossil in a pile of coal deposits. After that, more than 700 pieces of bone fossils were excavated. They were named Lama Ancient Homo Sapiens by archaeologists and anthropologists, believing that they lived about eight million years ago. In January 1988 the site of the coal deposit, where the first tooth fossil was found, was designated as a national key protection area, and the surrounding area of 20 acres (1.4 hectares) was walled. Within the protected area, an ancient ape statue monument was erected to mark this important archaeological discovery.

The Grand Courtyard of Wu Family
The Grand Courtyard of Wu Family is a typical Ming and Qing architecture that has been preserved to now. The Grand Courtyard of Wu Family was built in the 16th year of Daoguang in Qing Dynasty. It was expended in the 7th year of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty and was built along the mountain. It is a “王(Wang)-shape”, with a unique layout. It consists of four patios with 99 houses. It, with a building area of 10,000 square meters, is well-connected and is one of the rare ancient residential buildings in Yunnan.
Feilaisi Temple
Feilaisi Temple is located at the hillside. Because of the steep mountain, looking from the bottom of the mountain, the whole temple is like a big bird entwined in the mountain. It seems to be flying and it also seems to have just landed from the sky. Therefore, Feilaisi Temple got its name. Looking down from the temple, the Longchuanjiang River(龙川江) passes through the deep canyon, and the town’s buildings are dotted on both sides of the river.
Heijing Confucius Temple
The Heijing Confucian Temple is located in the Longchuanjiang River Gorge(龙川江峡谷), Lufeng County, Chuxiong Prefecture. The Heijing Confucius Temple was built in the 45th year of Ming Wanli (1617). 1 Day Chuxiong Lufeng World Dinosaur Valley Tour from Kunming
Yubeng Village is known for the beautiful valley it lies in and beautiful day treks which depart from it. Under the extraordinary craftsman by nature, Yubeng village is called the miniature version of the real Shangri-La.
It’s divided into two parts: the Upper Yubeng Village and Lower Yubeng Village, about 1 miles between the two parts. From Upper Yubeng, trekkers have access to the Base Camp, and Ice Lake hikes. From Lower Yubeng, you can find the paths to the Sacred Waterfall, and if you are a hardcore hiker, Holy Lake, which from a higher vantage point, has an unobstructed view of the Kawa Karpo Peak (6,740 meters), and most of the rest of the mountain range.
Yubeng is a Village in Northwestern Yunnan, situated at the foot of the Wuzi Mountain Peak of Niancimu Mountain Peak on Meili Snow Mountain, Yunling Country, Deqin County. One can only get there by trekking or mule-riding for 18 kilometers, and crossing over a pass of 3700 m.
Legend has it that for centuries Yubeng Village was unknown to the outside world. One day, an old man arrived in Xidang Village near Lancang River (the Mekong River) and tried to buy highland barley from the villagers there. No one knew where he came from, so some of the villagers followed him when he left, but on the way over the mountain the old man disappeared.
Later, the old man came back to Xidang to buy food again. The villagers objected and told him “we aren’t going to sell you barley or wheat, but just some millet.” When they loaded the food for the old man, one of the villagers made small holes on the bags. After he started his journey back home, the old man was followed again. He didn’t realize that the holes in the bags had spilled the millet along the way. However, when he reached a huge rock, he disappeared. So the villagers pried up the rock and Yubeng Village was discovered.
Due to no highway to access Yubeng village, one can only get there by trekking or mule-riding for 18 kilometers from Xidang Village, and crossing over a pass for 3700 meters.
How to Get Xidang Village?
By Bus
There are four buses from Shangri-la to Deqin every day and one bus from Deqin to Xidang.
By Car-rental
Tourists can rent a car from Deqin to Xidang Village. Remember to discuss the price with the driver and confirm the destination and route in advance to reduce unnecessary trouble.
Sacred Waterfall
Apparently best seen in the morning to catch rainbows. 4-5 hour hike. The path starts by crossing lower Yubeng, and turning right near the stupa. There are green trash cans along the path. There is a tea shop about 2/3 of the way to the waterfall. In the summer, the tea shops also provide basic lodgings and bedding if you want to stay overnight in the mountains.
Holy Lake
A high mountain lake south of Yubeng. 10 hour hike. Begin in Lower Yubeng, crossing the bridge to the left of the stupa and then taking an immediate right up a steep trail through a wooded mountainside. This part of the hike is slippery in parts and could be difficult in wet weather. After around 3 hours the trail contours round a slope into a meadow at 4300 m which has a partial shelter. This is followed by a relatively shallow ascent over rocky (and snowy) ground to the lake. Once at the lake it’s possible to go a little further towards the peak.
Base Camp and Ice Lake
From Upper Yubeng to Base Camp take about 3 hours. From the base camp to the lake is about another hour. The path leads towards the snow mountains, and starts off fairly easy, getting progressively steeper as you get to the top. Just before the lake, you may have scramble up some rocks for the last section of the walk, which could be a bit dangerous in winter. To reach the lake, you can scramble down the rocks to reach the bottom.
Route 1. Xidang Reshuitang(西当热水塘) – Nanzongla Yakou (南宗拉垭口) – Upper Yubeng Village – Lower Yubeng Village, then backtrack. This is the traditional way for most hikers. Horse-riding is available.
Route 2. Xidang – Zalang – Ninong – Yubeng River – Lower Yubeng Village – Upper Yubeng Village – Nanzongla Yakou – Reshuitang – Xidang. The route is an inner Circumambulating Pilgrimage route for the Tibetan people. It is too steep and many locals are not going this way.
Route 3. Xidang Reshuitang – Nanzongla Yakou (南宗拉垭口) – Upper Yubeng Village – Lower Yubeng Village – Yubeng River – Ninong. This line is the reverse of line 2.
The best time to visit Yubeng Village is from May to July in late spring and early summer; from September to October in autumn. Flowers bloom from may to July. From September to October, the scenery is charming. Large temperature difference between these two seasons and you’d better bring enough warm clothes when you travel.
Both upper Yubeng Village and lower Yubeng Village have hotels, including an international youth hostel. The condition is general, and cannot guarantee 24-hour electricity and hot water bath. There is food and drink in the hotel, but expensive. There are also small Sichuan restaurants. You can choose to stay at the base camp, but camping is not recommended because some campers are frozen to death while camping.
Feilai temple, the best place to watch goden peaks of Meili mountain at sunrise. So if u plan to watch sunrise, it’s absolutely a good idea to live at Feilai temple the night before. But actually it is unusual to see the goden peaks. The peaks of the mountains are often surrounded with clouds due to the high altitude they are. And this makes more interestings for Meili. There’s a kind of saying that, if any Japanese appears in this area then people can’t see the golden peaks that day. This is because Japanese are not welcomed by Tibetan people. Yes, they hate Japan and Japanese, just like people in notheast of China.
► The entrance ticket of Yubeng Village are not sold separately and would be included in the package of Meili Snow Mountain.
► On the way from Xidang to Yubeng Village, you can know how far you have walked by watching the number on the wastebasket. No.45 is the location of first rest stop and No. 21 is the second.
► The most practical local delicacies are buttered tea and instant noodles. Yak butter tea is the best food to supply physical strength and prevent altitude sickness on the plateau.
► Before entering the village, be sure to leave your big luggage at the inn and pack light with your necessities.
►Due to the inconvenience of transportation, the supplies here are more expensive than the outside, so bring some food that can supply physical strength such as dried meat, chocolate and so on.
► It takes a certain amount of physical strength and perseverance, and remember to bring waterproof and warm clothes and waterproof hiking shoes. An alpenstock is very useful.
► Respect the local custom. The sacred lake is so sacred to local Tibetans that they can only drink and cannot be used for washing anything.
► The mobile phone may be out of signal on the way.
► During golden week and peak tourist season, it is best to book the accommodation in advance through Internet or telephone.
► Yubeng Village is a great place to take photos of Shennv Mountain Peak. In a sunny day, Nanzongyakou, Sacred Waterfall Inn in lower Yubeng Village, Meili Inn and Hikers Guesthouse in Upper Yubeng Village are the perfect places to shoot.

Yufeng Temple (Chinese Name: 玉峰寺), located at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with ancient forests clustering around, is 9 km away from the Lijiang. Yufeng Temple is called ‘Kalashicongfeilin’ in Tibetan language. There is a small pond in front of the temple embraced by big pine trees. The whole temple shows a distinctive and conjunct architecture style of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and the local Naxi Dongba Religion due to the cultural communion between different minorities and different areas. It is also the witness of the peaceful coexistence and syncretism of multinational cultures and religions, and still plays a very important role in acculturation of Naxi Ethnic Group.
One Tree Forest breaks up the idiom ”one tree does not make a forest”. Walking in the park, you can enjoy the sights of the tree, taking photos, riding on an elephant and so forth.
The One Tree Forest scenic spot was rebuilt since March 2012 with a standard of national 4 A’s scenic spot. It is suggested to take around 2-3 hours to visit the spot.
Camellias and Ancient Trees
There are three courtyards in Yufeng Monastery, all decorated with ancient trees including ginkgo, magnolia and camellia. Wherein, the famous camellia tree “Ten Thousand Camellias” grows in the northern courtyard.
According to the legend, the camellia tree was planted during the reign of Emperor Cheng Hua in Ming Dynasty (1465 – 1487), before the monastery was built.
500 years ago, two different breeds of camellia “Lion Head” and “Early Peach Blossom” were grafted into one and live as one ever since, thus creating the unparalleled camellia tree.
Only 34 centimeters in diameter and 2 meters in height, the tree is surprisingly to have a crown area of 56 square meters, able to shade the whole courtyard in red when in full blossom.
February to April is the blossom season of Lijiang, when the camellia tree blossoms merrily in a total of 20 batches, each batch with more than 1,000 flowers, reaching a number of 20,000 flowers at the end of the season, thus named the “Ten Thousand Camellias.”
Yufeng Temple was built in the last years of the reign of emperor Kangxi in Qing dynasty and it is one of the famous lama temples in Lijiang. Comparing with many lamaseries in China, Jade Peak Temple is smaller and less imposing, but it is an old camellia tree that makes the temple so renowned. Grafted from single-lobe red-flower camellia and multi-lobe Shizitou camellia, for hundreds of years this tree has been growing with luxuriant foliage and blossom in season due to the careful cultivation of the lamas of the temple. Up to today it has been braided into an amazing pergola in less than 3 meters so that visitors can watch it in a close distance. From the beginning of spring to the beginning of summer, this magic camellia can blossom over 20 times, with more than 1000 flowers each time and more than 20, 000 in total every year! That’s why it is hailed as “ten-thousands-flower camellia”. According to garden experts of Yunnan Province, this camellia tree has a history of over 300 years, almost the same with the temple itself.
Yufeng Temple hall is quadrangle courtyard layout, consists of a gate, the hall, and two tigers. And it is harmonious symmetrical layout. The hall is facing east, double-hipped roof. The hall is16.3 meters wide and 12.6 meters deep. Upper eaves are brackets retainer, down eaves are arc-shaped, and it has strong architectural style of the Qing dynasty. Four golden columns in indoor are carved with dragon embossments. Octagonal caisson ceiling on the top was painted with tantric Buddha, beams skirtboard was painted 20 of Buddha figures, and the painting line is concise which has Tibetan “Thangka” style.
Different from typical Tibetan blockhouses, Yufeng Monastery is a traditional Chinese courtyard house composed of a gate tower, a main hall and two wing rooms both on the left and right sides in a symmetrical layout.
Designed with a total width of 16.3 meters and a total depth of 12.6 meters, the main hall is supported on the roof by “Dougong” — a system of brackets inserted between the top of a column and a crossbeam, revealing a strong Han Buddhism architectural style in the Qing Dynasty.
Inside the hall, there is the well painted Tantric Buddha and 20 Buddha statues of Tibetan “Thangka” style, showing its identity as a lamasery.
There is a wooden plaque hung on the main hall written with four words “Cang Zhi Yin Yu”, which were inscribed by Kong Jixin, a descendant of Confucius and the magistrate of Lijiang during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty.
Thanks to the unique aesthetics of local Naxi Minority, Yufeng Monastery is endowed with a picturesque landscape dotted with pine trees all around, a small pool in the front and the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain right behind, not to mention the incredible beauty when the famous camellia tree is in full blossom

The best time to experience the ravishing views of Yufeng Temple is in late spring and early summer, because the famous camellia tree is in full blossomy during the period. It is said that camellia tree was planted in Emperor Chenghua’s era of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and that is to say, the tree is older than Yufeng Temple. The flowers of the camellia tree could bloom for more than 100 days, and there are altogether twenty thousand flowers bloom in 20 batches. The camellia tree is three meters (ten feet) in height and 34 centimeters (one foot) in diameter and the Lamas in the temple pleach the blanches of the camellia tree subtly into a 56 square meters (67 yards) flowery canopy. When stepping close to the tree, you find yourself plunging into an ocean of redolent and beauteous flowers. Look at the flowers carefully and see if you can find out the uniqueness of this old camellia tree: the intoxicating flowers are of two different varieties. The bigger ones are pink and nine pistillate while the smaller ones are white and single pistillate; two trees, which originally grew side by side, have now, over the years, entwined. With the irradiation of the brilliant sunglow and the contrast of the green grassland, the flowering tree looks like burning flames from beyond. It is the real ‘King of the Camellia Trees’.
