Development and Construction
The total investment for the wetland park is 1.13 billion yuan, covering an area of 11,000 acres. The project plan includes seven major components: protection projects, restoration projects, popular science education projects, scientific research and monitoring projects, disaster prevention projects, capacity building for protection and management, and basic engineering. Considering various factors, the Yunnan Kunming Laoyu River National Wetland Park will be divided into five functional areas: wetland conservation area, restoration and reconstruction area, popular science education and display area, rational utilization area, and management and service area.
The construction of the wetland conservation area and restoration and reconstruction area was completed by June 30, 2020. The design and bidding for the construction of the popular science education area, rational utilization area, and management service area were also completed by June 30, 2020. Construction for these areas was completed by June 30, 2021. By December 31, 2021, a formal application for acceptance and registration was submitted to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

China’s State Forestry Administration officially awarded a title of National Wetland Park to Honghe Hani Terrace together with other 31 wetland parks in China, according to a conference that was held in Shandong province. Honghe Hani Terrace, covering an area of 13,011.57 hectares, spans 4 counties in Honghe prefecture. The 4 counties contain Yuanyang(元阳), Honghe(红河), Lvchun(绿春), and Jinping(金平).
The Hani terrace, which has been ploughed for over 1,300 years, is a large granary continuously providing rice and aquatic products for local people. The terrace exerted important wetland functions in the locality. It helps to adjust climates, conserve water and land, prevent landslide, and maintain diversities of animals and plants.
The terrace, having created agricultural ecological wonders for thousand years, will be elaborately managed in a level of National Wetland Park.

Dongdahe Wetland Park (东大河湿地公园) is a picturesque oasis located approximately 50 kilometers from Kunming (昆明). This wetland park is the largest estuarine wetland in Kunming City. Crescent Pond Park is strategically located in the main urban area of northern Kunming. It is bordered to the east by the Panlong River (盘龙江) greenbelt, to the west by the upscale Yunkang Garden (云康园) residential area, to the north by the established municipal government community, and to the south by land designated for the Yunnan Normal University (云师大) branch.

Wujiatang Wetland Park (五甲塘湿地公园) is located in the Guandu District (官渡区) of Kunming City (昆明市), Yunnan Province (云南省), specifically within the Liu Jia Township (六甲乡) and Xiaobanquiao area. The park stretches from the Baoxiang River (宝象河) in the south to the Wujiatang River (五甲河) in the north, and it borders Dianchi Lake (滇池) to the west. Covering an area of approximately 1,300 acres, it is equivalent to the size of four Cuihu Parks (翠湖公园). Currently, the park’s visitor center, parking lot, public restrooms, viewing paths, and a 60-meter entrance road have been largely completed.

- The wetland area of Wujiatang is rich in biodiversity, serving as a crucial habitat for various plant and animal species, including birds, insects, and other wildlife, contributing significantly to the biodiversity along the Dianchi Lake.
- The park plays an essential role in flood control for the rivers entering Dianchi, such as the Baoxiang River and Wujiatang River. It aids in regulating water flow, storing water, replenishing groundwater, and maintaining the regional water balance, effectively functioning as a natural “sponge” for flood prevention.
- As urbanization accelerates, the economic development in Liu Jia, Guandu, and Xiaobanquiao has been rapid. Agricultural and industrial growth, along with other human activities, has led to the inflow of pesticides and industrial pollutants into the wetland. Through biological and chemical processes within the wetland, these toxic substances can be degraded, effectively reducing pollution from upstream rivers like Baoxiang River and Wujiatang River. This natural barrier plays a vital role in improving the ecological environment around Dianchi and maintaining ecological balance along the lakeshore.
