Tucked away in the majestic Meli Snow Mountain, Yubeng Village is a serene and enchanting destination that will transport you to a bygone era. With only 20 households and a single winding road connecting it to the outside world, this secluded village is a true gem. The village is divided into two parts, the upper village and lower village, each offering unique experiences: the former provides access to the base camp of the Joint Sino-Japanese expedition, while the latter leads to ancient secrets at Yubeng Ancient Seal Character and other hidden gems. During our 5-day Meili Snow Mountain and Yubeng Village Hiking Tour from Shangri-La, you'll embark on an unforgettable journey, visiting Baima Snow Mountain and Great Bend of Yangtze River along the way before transferring to Meili Snow Mountain for a trekking experience that will take us to breathtaking Ice Lake, Shenpu Sacred Waterfalls, Ninong Valley, and Mekong Grand Canyon.
Depart from Lijiang and pass through Xiaozhongdian, where vast grasslands dotted with grazing cattle and sheep create a picturesque scenery. Continuing on, reach Shangri-La and visit the Napa Lake Viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the seasonal wetland, which alternates between a grassy expanse and a lake throughout the year, each season revealing a different beauty.
From there, head to Benzilan, a peaceful riverside town where you can enjoy lunch at your leisure and sample some local specialties.
In the afternoon, explore Jinsha River Moon Bay, a stunning natural formation where the river winds around a mountain peak in an “Ω”-shaped bend. Then, continue your journey over Baima Snow Mountain, marveling at the snow-capped peaks and mist-covered slopes.
Finally, arrive at Feilai Temple, where you'll check in to a hotel with a view of Meili Snow Mountain. This location provides the perfect opportunity to admire the majestic mountain from your window. Meals are at your leisure, and the night will be spent at the Feilai Temple view hotel.
In the early morning, head to Feilai Temple to catch the sunrise over Meili Snow Mountain, weather permitting. The view of the “Golden Mountain” at dawn is one of the most breathtaking sights in Yunnan.
Then, drive to Ninong Village, located at the foot of the snow mountain. Surrounded by pristine forests and deep gorges, Ninong is the starting point for your trek.
Begin the 15 km trek through Ninong Grand Canyon, which will take about 5 hours. The route takes you through crystal-clear streams, lush forests, and along the river that flows from the sacred waterfall of Yubeng. Your first stop will be Lower Yubeng, and from there, continue on to Upper Yubeng Village, a peaceful Tibetan settlement nestled between towering snow-capped peaks.
Arriving at Upper Yubeng, check in to your hotel and take the evening to rest. Meals are at your own discretion, and you’ll spend the night in a mountain-view hotel in Yubeng.
Start your day with a 14 km trek to Ice Lake, which will take approximately 8 hours for the round trip. The trail passes through sea buckthorn groves and into pristine alpine forests, leading to the sacred glacial lake.
Along the way, stop for a rest and lunch at Xiaonong Base Camp, once used by the China-Japan joint expedition team attempting to climb Kawagarbo Peak.
Continue to Ice Lake, a breathtakingly clear lake that reflects the surrounding snow-covered peaks. After taking in the majestic view, retrace your steps back to Upper Yubeng along the same route.
In the evening, return to your hotel to relax. Meals are at your own discretion, and you will stay overnight in a mountain-view hotel in Yubeng.
Begin your return trek through Ninong Grand Canyon, covering the same 15 km distance in about 5 hours. The serene beauty of the canyon will accompany you along the way.
After exiting the canyon, take a break for lunch in Ninong Village and taste some local dishes before continuing your journey.
Drive back to Lijiang via Baima Snow Mountain and Shangri-La, enjoying the changing views of the mountains and valleys as you go.
