Mazhuang Village and Relic of Ancient Tea Horse Road in Fengqing County, Lincang

Mazhuang Village and the relic of The Ancient Tea Horse Road (大寺乡马庄村茶马古道遗址) are situated in Dasi Town, Fengqing County, Lincang.

Located in the northern part of Fengqing County, Yunnan Province, on the southern bank of the Lancang River, Mazhuang Village holds historical significance as part of the “Tea-Horse Ancient Road.” The village is scattered along the deep mountains, where, during ancient times, the caravans traveling between the southwest mountainous areas and Tibetan regions established post stations and horse shops. Numerous horse hitching posts were found nearby, giving rise to the name “horse piles.”

According to Xu Xiake’s Travels: “After another three miles, passing through a village, it was already dark. After another two miles, we lodged in the high soap trough. The innkeeper, an elderly man surnamed Mei, was quite hospitable and specially brewed Chinese tea for us to drink.” In the article, it refers to the village under the jurisdiction of Mazhuang Village today. Xu Xiake also quoted a poem by Dai Bing, a poet from the Song Dynasty: “Take the fragrant spring, and burn the stone tripod to try new tea,” expressing his gratitude to the innkeeper Mei and his appreciation for Taihua tea.
