Nanduan Village Lahu Ethnic Culture Protection Area in Nuofu Town of Lancang County, Puer

Nanduan Village (南段村), located in Nuofu Township (糯福乡), Lancang Lahu Autonomous County (澜沧拉祜族自治县), Yunnan Province, is a traditional Lahu ethnic settlement on the Sino-Myanmar border. Covering 30.11 square kilometers with a population of around 1,928 residents, the village is predominantly inhabited by the Lahu people, alongside smaller populations of Hani and Han groups. The village sits at an elevation of 1,800 meters, enjoys a mild subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 17℃, and boasts a forest coverage rate of more than 80%. With its preserved stilt-style architecture, rich Lahu traditions, and growing eco-agricultural economy, Nanduan Village exemplifies the resilience and cultural heritage of Yunnan’s borderland communities.

Geographic Location

Nanduan Village is located 51 kilometers from the Nuofu Township government seat and 149 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Bakananai Village (坝卡乃村) to the east, Wanka Village (宛卡村) to the west, and the China–Myanmar border to the south. The terrain is mountainous, with lush vegetation and abundant rainfall, creating favorable conditions for tea and grain cultivation.

Demographics

As of 2011, Nanduan Village had 523 households with a population of 1,928 people, including 1,061 males and 862 females. The Lahu make up the overwhelming majority, with 1,913 individuals, while Hani (2 people), Han (22 people), and other ethnic minorities (7 people) account for a small proportion. The village has a labor force of about 795 people, most of whom are engaged in the primary sector.

Natural Resources

The village has 7,202 mu of arable land (about 480 hectares), with rice paddies and dry fields supporting the cultivation of staple grains and tea. Forest land covers 37,642 mu, including 6,126 mu of economic forest primarily planted with tea. The ecological environment is well preserved, and in 2022, the village was awarded the title of Yunnan Provincial Forest Village.

Infrastructure

By 2011, the village had achieved basic access to water, electricity, roads, and telecommunications. However, water quality issues persisted, with 514 households reporting unsafe drinking water. Roads within the village were largely gravel or stone, and irrigation infrastructure remained underdeveloped, with an effective irrigation rate of just 10.85%. Households primarily lived in wooden or mixed-material houses, with limited modern housing.

Renewable energy adoption included 66 households with biogas facilities and 15 with solar installations. Despite improvements, sanitation facilities such as public toilets and waste management systems remained underdeveloped.

Education

Nanduan Village has one primary school with 132 students and six teachers. Middle school students travel to Nuofu Township Middle School, about 51 kilometers away. Education remains a challenge due to the remote location, but efforts to promote compulsory education have ensured full enrollment of school-aged children.

Healthcare

Medical services rely on the village clinic and the township health center, located 51 kilometers away. The village clinic has two rural doctors and covers basic medical needs, but infrastructure and services remain limited. Almost all villagers participate in rural cooperative medical insurance, achieving a 100% coverage rate.

Culture and Heritage

Nanduan Village is a traditional Lahu settlement that has preserved its unique stilt-house architecture, indigenous religion, and customs. Longzhupeng Old Village (龙竹棚老寨) was recognized in 2019 as a “Chinese Ethnic Minority Characteristic Village” for its cultural significance. The preservation of traditional lifestyles, coupled with the integration of tourism, highlights the village’s role as a living museum of Lahu culture.

Despite achievements in poverty alleviation, Nanduan Village still faces several challenges:
