On the vast land of northwest Yunnan lies a hidden paradise—where majestic snow-capped peaks tower above, mighty gorges carve the earth, and tranquil, time-worn towns whisper stories of old. It’s as if nature herself sculpted a masterpiece, waiting for curious travelers to explore and admire. Today, let us embark on an unforgettable journey through this magical corner of Yunnan.
Itinerary
Route: Zichen Boyue Hotel (紫宸泊阅酒店) → Bingzhongluo (丙中洛)
Distance: 260 km
Speed Limit: 30 km/h
Driving Time: Approximately 6 hours
Highlights: Scenic views along the De’gong Highway (德贡公路); arrival in Bingzhongluo (丙中洛)
Overnight: Nujiang Gongshan Yilamila Cloud Residence Hotel (怒江贡山伊拉米拉云居酒店)
Perched at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山) in Deqin County (迪庆藏族自治州德钦县), Feilai Temple (飞来寺) is a serene Tibetan Buddhist monastery that seems to guard this sacred land. Its crowning glory is the sunrise view: from the temple’s vantage point, the mist-shrouded peaks appear shy, like a maiden unveiling her veil. As the first rays of dawn break over the ridges, the world falls into sacred stillness—every worry melts away, leaving only the pure awe of nature’s spectacle.
Rising over 5,000 meters above sea level in the Dulong River (独龙江) valley of Gongshan County (贡山县), Peacock Mountain (孔雀山) is part of the Gaoligong Range (高黎贡山).
Untouched and steeped in legend, its raw beauty draws adventurers and nature lovers alike. Today, we venture to uncover its mysteries and bask in this pristine wilderness.
Where to Camp
Alulaka Pasture (阿鲁腊卡牧场) & Baihan Pasture (白汉牧场) in Dengdang Township (捧当乡): Open grasslands, fresh air, and sweeping mountain vistas make these perfect for pitching tents and savoring serene nights.
Near the Peacock Mountain Pass (孔雀山垭口): For those craving an even closer encounter, set up camp on the high-altitude plateau—just be prepared for sudden weather shifts and occasional wildlife visitors.
Getting There
Depart from Gongshan Town (贡山县城) or Bingzhongluo Town (丙中洛镇), follow the De’gong Highway tunnel, and continue up to the pass. A sturdy off-road vehicle and an experienced driver are highly recommended.
Best Time to Camp
Spring and autumn offer the most breathtaking views—spring’s lingering snow framed by sunset hues, and autumn’s riot of colors like a painter’s palette come to life.
Safety Tips
The terrain here is fragile, with loose stones and potential mud-slide zones. Wildlife is abundant; novice campers should exercise caution and ideally camp with a guide.
Leaving Peacock Mountain behind, we follow the roaring Nu River (怒江) to its famed First Bend near Ridan Village (日丹村), Bingzhongluo Township (丙中洛乡). Here, a colossal cliff diverts the river’s course from north-south to east-west, carving out a dramatic semicircle—hence the name “First Bend.”
From the lookout, the Nu River’s deep blue waters crash through the canyon, sparkling in sunlight. Encircled by towering peaks in a giant “Ω” shape, the scene pulses with raw power and natural grandeur. Beyond its geological allure, this spot is rich in cultural heritage: Lisu (傈僳族), Nu (怒族), and other ethnic communities have lived in harmony with these lands for generations.
Nestled deep within the Nujiang Grand Canyon lies the mist-clad township of Bingzhongluo (丙中洛). Here, amidst stunning landscapes and vibrant ethnic cultures, stands the Nujiang Gongshan Yilamila Cloud Residence Hotel (怒江贡山伊拉米拉云居酒店)—a jewel in the crown of Jinjiang Hotels (锦江酒店).
Named after the legendary Nu ethnic “Goddess of Happiness,” it offers weary travelers a warm sanctuary, where every stay feels like a blessed encounter with local folklore and natural beauty.
Shangri-La (香格里拉), a name steeped in mystery from James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon, literally means “sun and moon in the heart.” Nestled in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州) of northwest Yunnan Province (云南省), it is a paradise where natural wonders and ethnic culture intertwine. Here you’ll find snow-capped peaks, vast grasslands, crystal-clear lakes, dense forests, and a vibrant Tibetan heritage that beckons adventurous travelers. The 260-kilometer drive from Lijiang (丽江) to Shangri-La via National Highway 214 is hailed as one of China’s most scenic routes, winding past the spectacular Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡), the majestic Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山), and the historic Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城). Though challenging, this six-hour journey rewards drivers with breathtaking panoramas and unforgettable cultural encounters.
Route: Lijiang (丽江) → Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) → Shangri-La (香格里拉) via National Highway 214
Speed Limit: 80 km/h
Distance: 260 km
Approximate Drive Time: 6 hours
Key Stops:
Upper, Middle, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)

At Muyexinju (沐野心居), you’ll find a perfect blend of local Tibetan aesthetics and modern comforts. Relax in elegantly decorated rooms, savor regional delicacies, and soak up panoramic hill views—all while delving into authentic Tibetan customs.
On the day our convoy arrived, it coincided with Mother’s Day, so Yaso Travel surprised every lady in the group with fresh flowers and cake—a thoughtful touch that added warmth to the journey.
To keep spirits high, our team also prepared a sumptuous spread: freshly baked pizzas sending savory aromas through the air, soft artisanal breads hot from the oven, and vibrant vegetable salads—a colorful feast to recharge before the next leg.
Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) is one of the deepest and most dramatic canyons in the world, and is celebrated as one of China’s most beautiful gorges. Rugged cliffs tower on either side of the roaring Jinsha River, which slices between Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山) and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山), unleashing torrents that thunder through the valley. In summer, you’ll hear the distant roar before you see the glistening rapids—nature’s own symphony of power and grace. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the trail for an up-close encounter with this awe-inspiring spectacle.
In Haba Village (哈巴村), the charming coffee cart at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山) offers more than just a caffeine fix. Sip hand-brewed Tibetan-style coffee, chat with local farmers, and glimpse daily life in a traditional mountain community—an ideal pause to connect with the people and their land.
Zaya Tusi Manor (扎雅土司庄园) is the largest of its kind in Shangri-La, believed to have inspired the mansion of Lord Duoji in the TV series Shangri-La. Nestled against snowy peaks and overlooking the town below, the estate’s grand Tibetan architecture comprises the main hall, a cultural exhibition room, a Buddhist prayer hall, and guest quarters spread over more than 5,000 sqm. Statues of the Tusi’s prized steeds stand by the entrance, and visitors can even ride horseback through the grounds.
Inside, the Tusi Cultural Exhibition (藏文化陈列室) showcases hunting bow and arrow sets, ornate saddles, ritual drinking vessels, snuff bottles, and finger rings—each artifact a window into the opulent lifestyle of the ancient Tibetan chieftains. The manor also hosts live cultural performances: Tibetan song and dance, interactive string-instrument demonstrations, and authentic ceremonies.
As evening falls, join the lively Tibetan bonfire party (藏族篝火晚会) in the courtyard, where you’ll mingle with villagers around roaring flames. Indulge in self-serving beef hotpot, toast with barley wine (青稞酒) and butter tea (酥油茶), and sample roasted whole lamb—an immersive banquet fit for royalty, set to the rhythm of zither strings and clapping hands.
For those seeking a touch of luxury, the Hilton Shangri-La Resort & Spa (香格里拉希尔顿酒店) delivers five-star comfort with spacious rooms, fine dining, and world-class amenities—all just minutes from the town center and high-altitude wonders.
Yaso Travel’s meticulously crafted self-drive itinerary weaves together “nature in harmony with culture.” From Lijiang (丽江), you traverse 260 km of dramatic landscapes along National Highway 214, arriving at the Tibetan frontier of Shangri-La (香格里拉). With safety-first planning—80 km/h speed limits—every milestone is enriched by thoughtful touches: Mother’s Day flowers and cake, a mountain-side coffee cart with Tibetan flair, non-heritage tea ceremonies, and an authentic bonfire gala at Zaya Tusi Manor (扎雅土司庄园). Cap off each day at the Hilton Resort (香格里拉希尔顿酒店), where luxury and serenity await. This isn’t just a road trip—it’s a transformative “sun and moon” odyssey of mind and soul.

Every Saturday evening and Sunday morning, the market in Lancang Street (澜沧街) opens up. Villagers from surrounding towns arrive early to sell their mountain gifts and local specialties. The market is filled with the lively interaction of locals and visitors, all coming together to shop and socialize. The market is filled with a variety of local pickled fish, meat, vegetables, and more, making it a bustling and vibrant place.
Located on the west bank of Nanlang River (南朗河) in Lancang County, Lancang Street is 800 meters long. The street is divided into areas for ecological agriculture products, local foods, and clothing and daily goods. The market features unique wooden booths with ethnic characteristics. The wooden structures are layered and cross each other, hosting traditional shops that showcase Lahu (拉祜) ethnic culture, including clothing, tea culture, and hand drums. The market is rich in variety and offers something for everyone.
Lancang Street (澜沧街) hosts various special events each year, including:
Bonfire parties, traditional “Three Step Dance” (三跺脚舞), and other cultural experiences.
Performances by intangible cultural heritage inheritors, Lahu (拉祜) music performances, and ethnic fashion shows.
Traditional Lantern Festival (元宵灯会) and Mid-Autumn Moon Viewing (中秋赏月会) with folk customs.
At the Happy Lahu Town (快乐拉祜小镇) central square, the Water Music Show is a stunning display of fountains in over ten different forms. The water dances, illuminated by colored lights and lasers, creating a visual feast. This dynamic performance turns the entire street into a lively celebration, reflecting the vibrant energy of the area.
Lancang’s slower pace encapsulates the essence of life here. There are tea houses, inns, opera stages, and even the small, intimate stalls that add a touch of local charm. The contrast of high culture and simple folk life blends together to represent the good life people long for, with the air filled with the vibrant hustle and bustle of everyday life.
One October evening, the new street of Lancang (澜沧) by the Nanlang River (南朗河) comes alive as the lights start to twinkle. The market slowly fills up with activity, drawing locals and visitors alike. The lively smoke from food stalls, the continuous music, and the warm, festive atmosphere create a vibrant ambiance.
The night market is part of a larger plan to revitalize the area, and the local government invested significant resources to upgrade the Nanlang River Road (南朗河路段), building Lahu Village (拉祜小镇) and establishing the Lancang Street Night Market. This new street combines the promotion of Lahu culture, creative industries, and trendy cultural elements, making it a premier leisure and entertainment destination for the local community.
When the street opens in the evening, the market is bustling with energy, as vendors set up stalls and prepare their delicious offerings. Along the street, shops open their doors, welcoming customers with bright lights and inviting displays. The market is full of people, young and old, enjoying the lively atmosphere, with tempting street food at every corner. Even when the market isn’t open, the nearby Nanlang River Boardwalk (南朗河栈道) sees plenty of visitors out for evening walks or to exercise.
Lancang Street has become a favorite spot for locals to relax and enjoy themselves, embodying the relaxed rhythm of life. The night market captures this perfectly, blending culture, tradition, and the simple joys of life.
Rattan Tea is a unique variety of Pu’er Tea (普洱茶), grown predominantly in the tea regions of Yunnan (云南). It is named after its distinct appearance, where the branches of the tea tree resemble rattan vines. This tea is known for its delicate flavor, aroma, and special cultivation method.
Rattan Tea is easily distinguishable from other varieties of Pu’er Tea due to its tree structure. The tea tree’s branches are thin and long, and they are often covered by rattan-like vines. These vines grow out from the branches, with the lower sections being bare of leaves. Only the tips of these vines carry young buds and leaves, creating a unique and striking appearance.
The cultivation method of Rattan Tea has been developed over many years by tea farmers in Yunnan, who have shaped the growth of the tree to promote the development of these vines. The resulting tea has a distinct flavor profile, characterized by a sweet, floral aroma and a smooth, rich taste.
Rattan Tea is predominantly grown in the mountainous regions of Yunnan (云南), where the conditions are perfect for its unique growth pattern. The primary cultivation areas include:
Rattan Tea can be found in many parts of Yunnan, especially in the following regions:
Xiaojinggu Township (小景谷乡) in Jinggu County (景谷县)
Taihe Township (太和乡) in Zhenyuan County (镇沅县)
Mengku (勐库)
Dongban Mountain (东半山) in Menghai County (勐海县)
Xigui in Bangdong Township (邦东乡昔归)
Yongde County (永德县) in the Lincang (临沧) tea region
These regions are known for their ideal growing conditions, including high altitudes, abundant rainfall, and a mild climate, which together create the perfect environment for Rattan Tea trees.
Rattan Tea stands out because of its unusual cultivation and processing methods. Here are the key characteristics that make Rattan Tea unique:
Rattan Tea trees have very few leaves, and the main trunks and branches are often exposed. These trees produce long, thin, and soft vines that twist around the branches, resembling rattan. The lower sections of these vines are leafless, and only the tips of the branches contain young buds and leaves.
Rattan Tea is known for its mild, sweet flavor with a rich aroma. The tea has a smooth, floral taste with a lingering aftertaste that is both refreshing and pleasant. The flavor profile of Rattan Tea is largely influenced by the unique cultivation method, as well as the age of the trees and the surrounding environment.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Rattan Tea is its aroma. It has a strong fragrance that is both floral and slightly woody, creating a multi-layered and complex scent. The aroma remains strong even after several brews, which is a hallmark of high-quality Rattan Tea.
Rattan Tea is cultivated using a special management method that focuses on maintaining the health and growth of the tea tree. The trees are carefully pruned, and only the top buds and leaves are allowed to grow. This method encourages the growth of long, strong vines that resemble rattan.
The cultivation method used for Rattan Tea is known as “Leaving the Top Buds to Grow” (留顶养标). In this process, all side buds and leaves are pruned, leaving only the new shoots at the top of the branches. This encourages the growth of longer, stronger shoots and fewer side branches. As the tree grows taller, it produces fewer leaves, but the remaining leaves are more concentrated at the top of the tree.
This method results in a slower-growing tea tree, but it produces tea leaves that are more tender and flavorful. The harvests are also spaced out, with several picking seasons throughout the year.
Rattan Tea is typically harvested three to four times a year, depending on the region and the specific tea tree. The four main harvest seasons are:
First Spring Tea (头春茶): Harvested in early spring, this tea is the most sought-after and has the best flavor.
Second Water Tea (二水茶): Harvested in late spring or early summer, this tea has a milder flavor than the spring tea.
Autumn Tea (谷花茶): Harvested in autumn, this tea is less commonly harvested but still has a good flavor.
Winter Tea (冬茶): Occasionally harvested in winter, this tea is often less robust than the other harvests.
Rattan Tea is not just valued for its unique flavor, but also for its special cultivation and harvesting techniques. The trees are grown in a way that allows the vines to grow long and twist around the branches, creating a unique, almost artistic structure. These vines are not just for appearance, though—they play a crucial role in the tea tree’s ability to grow taller and produce better tea leaves.
The “dancing” characteristic of Rattan Tea, where the vines sway in the wind, adds to its appeal. This movement creates a sense of life and vitality within the tea garden. The appearance of the trees—intertwined with vines and swaying in the breeze—resembles a dance, which is why Rattan Tea is sometimes called “Dancing Ancient Tree Tea” (舞动古树茶).
The regions where Rattan Tea is cultivated have several advantages that contribute to its high quality. These include:
The high altitudes, cool temperatures, and misty conditions of Yunnan provide the perfect environment for Rattan Tea to thrive. The region’s unique terrain—mountainous with varying elevations—creates microclimates that allow the tea to grow in a variety of conditions, from cooler, foggy areas to sun-exposed hillsides.
The soil in these regions is rich in nutrients, which contribute to the tea’s robust flavor. The natural fertility of the land, combined with the careful cultivation practices, allows for healthy tea trees that produce high-quality leaves.
The use of traditional cultivation methods, such as hand-picking and pruning, ensures that Rattan Tea is harvested in the most optimal way. These methods preserve the integrity of the tea tree and allow the natural flavors of the tea to develop fully.
Rattan Tea (藤条茶) from Yunnan is a unique and highly prized tea, known for its distinctive vine-like branches, rich flavor, and the special cultivation practices that go into producing it. The combination of ideal growing conditions, traditional methods, and careful harvesting results in a tea that is both flavorful and aromatic. For tea enthusiasts looking for something unique, Rattan Tea offers an unforgettable experience.
