Below you’ll find some bird watching tips for beginners which were helpful to me when I was just a fledgling birder myself.

Using Binoculars

If you don’t have a pair of binoculars or are thinking of retiring your old pair, review this article on choosing the best bird watching binoculars before making a purchase.

If you already have a pair of bins that you enjoy using, then great! Below are some bird watching tips when using binoculars.

Adjust your binoculars for your eyes:

Stand about 30 feet away from a sign with clear lettering and follow these steps:

First, adjust the barrels of your binoculars so they fit your eye spacing. Spread the barrels as far wide as they will go. Bring them up to your eyes, facing the sign, and press the barrels together until the two images converge into one. Now they should fit your eyes comfortably.
Next, turn the center focus wheel as far to the right as you can and the individual focus (usually right eyepiece) as far to the left as it will go. Both eyepieces should be out of focus now.
Facing the sign with eyes shut, bring the binoculars up to your eyes. With your left eye open, turn the center focus wheel until the lettering comes into sharp focus. To be sure you have the sharpest possible focus, pass the sharpest point and then back up to find it again.
Now, shut your left eye and with your right eye open, turn the right eyepiece (individual focus wheel) clockwise, bringing the lettering into focus. Again, pass the point of sharp focus and then back up to where the lettering is sharpest.
Open both eyes, and the binoculars will be in perfect focus.
Note the right eyepiece setting, as it is nowbinocular adjustment adjusted for your eyes. This way, if it is accidentally moved you can quickly turn it back to your eye setting.
Protect your binoculars when not using them. Clean the lenses before each outing. The last thing you need is a big smudge or scratch on your lens when trying to ID that life bird!

Locating Birds with Binoculars

Finding birds with binocularsTrying to locate a bird in a dense patch of trees or shrubs can be difficult with binoculars, especially for beginners.

Use your naked eyes and ears first. Look for movement and focus on sound.
Step back, keep your head still, and let your eyes relax. It will be much easier for your eyes to detect any movement when you are still and not moving your head around.
Find the bird with your eyes first, then while focusing on the bird, bring your binoculars up to your eyes to get a better look. Don’t look down at your binoculars when doing this. Keep your eye on the bird.
Also note any distinguishing points of reference that will help you find the bird with your binoculars.

For example, if the bird is next to branch that curves in a unique way or near a leaf that looks different than the others.

This way when you bring the binoculars up to your eyes and don’t have the bird in view immediately, you can use these points of reference to guide you in the right direction.

Find The Bird First With Your Eyes

It’s much easier to find a bird with your eyes first than trying with 8x or higher magnification.

For example, when you’re trying to find someone in a crowd, it’s a lot easier when you have a wider field of view.

Find the bird first, then use the binoculars to see details. For example, if a bird is in a tree, look at the branch its on with your eyes first and anything unique that would be easy to find first with binoculars, then you can follow the branch over while looking through your binoculars to find the bird.

Practice finding birds with your binoculars in your backyard. This way when the pressure is on in the field it will be a lot easier to find that fast-moving warbler flitting branch to branch.

Giving Directions to Fellow Birders
When you just spotted that Orange-breasted Honeyeater for the first time and your birding pal quietly shouts, “Where?!”

Don’t reply, “Up there, in the tree!” (when you’re in a forest) or “Just to the right of the clouds!” (on a cloudy day) or “Out there flying over the water!” (on a boat in the ocean).

You need to be as specific as you can.

First use large points of reference, then get more detailed, i.e., “Do you see the large maple tree closest to us? Go 2 trees down to the right, and the bird is in the one with the leaves that are starting to turn yellow near the bottom.”

Bird Watching TipsThen, once the person is looking at the right object, use the clock system.

In a tree 12 o’clock would be the top, 6 o’clock the bottom, 9 o’clock middle left of center, 3 o’clock middle right of center.

So you could say, “The bird is sitting on a branch at about 2 o’clock, half-way out from the center of the tree. It’s on the thickest branch that curls downward near the tip”.

Practice when you’re birding alone.

How would you tell someone the location of a bird you are watching?

Don’t get frustrated when someone doesn’t understand your directions. Keep giving them different points of reference until they catch on.

Keep a Journal

Some people keep a life list of all the birds they have seen since they started bird watching.

When listing make note of the species but also the date, specific location, habitat, male or female and behaviors (feeding young, catching insects, preening, etc.). Be as detailed as you can.

It’s fun to look back on these notes and remember when you were just a fledgling of a birder.

If kept in an organized manner, your field notes and observations can produce useful scientific data.

I arrived at Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary a few minutes late, having hit the snooze button one too many times on an early June morning. The workshop, a survey of bird song hosted by a local tour company, had already started.

What I saw as I approached the assembly point made me question why I had signed up: birders standing in a circle, heads to the ground, wearing blindfolds, listening.

I reluctantly donned one of my own — blindfolds, really? — and joined the group. The Asheville, North Carolina, air was humid and silent. I considered ripping the bandana from my eyes — it is called bird watching, after all — but resisted.

My interest in bird song had begun after an outing with the local birding club. As I scrambled to focus my binoculars on every flash of movement, the more experienced members of the group walked along casually, binoculars at their sides, calling out bird IDs left and right. I realized then that there’s more to watching birds than, well, watching. I had paid for optics and spent time studying field guides but invested too little in my other senses.

Now I know even a basic understanding of vocalizations can expand your knowledge and awareness of the bird life in your area. It’s especially helpful for picking out reclusive birds like Red-eyed Vireo and Eastern Towhee; fast ones, like swifts and swallows; and for those instances when you don’t have time to slow down, don’t have your binoculars, or are birding in dense habitat. It’s also nearly essential for distinguishing birds that look almost identical — American and Fish Crows, for example.

Countless attempts have been made to describe bird songs and calls — musical notations, sonograms, comparative descriptions, and mnemonics — yet birding by ear remains as hard to define as it is valuable. It takes patience, practice, and years of work to nail down, but it’s not as difficult as you might think. By following the six tips below, you can strengthen your listening skills and take your hobby to a new level.

1. Learn how to listen

After a few excruciating moments of blindfolded silence, bird sounds started to reverberate off Beaver Lake: a sweet succession of whistles, a plaintive call, a harsh jeer. Before asking us to put names with the sounds, Simon Thompson, leader of the workshop, asked us to focus on one at a time and describe what we were hearing. “Put words with it if you like, or describe it in some other way that makes sense to you. Does it sound like a rusty gate? Is it sweet? Repetitive?”

Thompson’s approach was a good one, as the key to successful ear birding is learning how to listen. Just as we have to train our eyes to focus on the shape of a bird’s body, the curve of its bill, and the length of its tail, we have to learn to differentiate between a song or call’s tone, pitch, and pattern.

Is it high and sweet like a titmouse? Shrill like a Sharp-shinned Hawk? Or nasal like a White-breasted Nuthatch? Does it rise in pitch or does it fall? Does it come in groups of two or four? Can you discern a space between each new bout? By asking yourself these questions, you’ll begin to understand what it is that makes a cardinal’s birdy, birdy, birdy different from a titmouse’s peter, peter, peter, and the cardinal’s chip distinguishable from the Brown Thrasher’s chack!

If you’re practically tone deaf, like yours truly, don’t dismay; this is something you already do every day. When the song “Like a Rolling Stone” comes on the radio, for instance, you know automatically that the slightly nasal, raspy sound belongs to Bob Dylan. You probably aren’t consciously identifying what aspects of the music tip you off; certain artists just have characteristic sounds. With practice, you’ll realize that the same is true with bird vocalizations.

2. Master the songs of local birds

Once you’ve learned how to listen and what to listen for, the next question is where to begin. The thought of learning every single call and song in every single bird’s repertoire can seem daunting even for the most musically gifted.

So start small. Learning bird songs is like learning a language: Before you can speak, you have to develop your basic vocabulary. In bird speak, this means picking out several birds in your area and learning them well. “Once you have that solid grounding, it’s pretty transferable,” says eBird project leader and BirdWatching magazine contributor Marshall Iliff.

He proved that on a recent trip to Vietnam. Despite having no knowledge of the country’s birds, he was able to learn the songs and calls of the local species after only a couple days by associating them with birds he was already familiar with. It also helps that many birds within the same family have similar-sounding songs, so even if you can’t pinpoint the exact bird, you can at least narrow it down to the correct family.

If you’re still not sure where to begin, Iliff recommends starting with bird sounds you already know. “Whether or not a birder realizes it, everyone knows some already — Mourning Dove, Canada Goose, ducks, crows.”

Like learning root words in English and then adding suffixes, prefixes, and other flourishes as you go along, your knowledge of local bird songs becomes the base you build upon, so that when you learn new songs, you have a solid reference point. Thompson advocates this approach as well. For him, it’s the easiest way to learn a new song. By relating a new sound to a bird he already knows, he can establish a new association in his brain. Iliff, for example, describes a Scarlet Tanager as sounding like a robin with a sore throat, while Thompson says a Magnolia Warbler sounds like a Hooded Warbler not finishing its song properly.

3. Associate songs with something memorable

We’ve all heard the catchy phrases people come up with to describe bird songs. Some of them, like “Drink your tea!” for Eastern Towhee, are obvious. Others are less so. The key is to find something memorable to associate with what you’re hearing. Thompson’s approach is a good starting point. Many people like to use words, but when White-throated Sparrow sings, what sounds like “Old Sam Peabody Peabody” to one person may sound like “Oh sweet Canada Canada” to another.

The trick is to find something that resonates with you. My personal favorite is Thompson’s description of a Red-breasted Nuthatch — “like a miniature forklift backing up.” A few that stood out for Iliff, who credits mnemonics as being helpful when he was starting out: “Tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle” for Carolina Wren, the aforementioned “Drink your tea!” for Eastern Towhee, and two stones rubbing together for Yellow Rail.

4. Track down birds on your own

When it comes to building your ID toolbox, all the birders I spoke with agree there is no substitute for going out and tracking down birds on your own. Thompson, who’s been birding since he was eight and is reluctant to give away his age, admits bird-song CDs didn’t even exist when he was starting out. “I did have a couple of 45s, and I’d listen to those, but mostly I just did an awful lot of exploring by myself.”

Iliff also recommends the solo method. “Hearing a bird, tracking it down, figuring it out on your own — that’s where the best ear birders are made,” he asserts. He’s tried listening to songs and calls on CDs and other methods, but nothing really worked until he got out in the field and experienced it for himself. “Having to track down the bird by myself — seeing it in the tree, in its habitat — the entire experience helps to cement the memory in my brain.”

For Jessie Barry, that hunt is a big part of the thrill. She’s the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s lead developer of an online bird-identification tool called Merlin. Like Iliff and Thompson, she can now easily identify most any song she hears without a second thought, but she still gets a charge out of hearing a new song and chasing it to its source. “When you hear something different, that’s when it’s really exciting,” she says. “That’s when you learn something. You get better, and you may find a rare bird, which is something I really enjoy.”

Barry knows well the value of sound in identifying birds. In Texas in April 2011, she, Iliff, and four other members of Cornell’s all-star Team Sapsucker found 264 bird species in 24 hours, setting a new Big Day record for North America. She estimates that at least half of the birds were identified by ear.

5. Go out with more ­experienced ear birders

After working on your own, there will come a time when you’ll need a boost. This is when it can be helpful to attach yourself to ear birders who are more experienced than you. Doing this helped Iliff realize how much more he could learn. He recommends not being afraid to ask questions.

“You’ll definitely reach a plateau doing it on your own,” he says, “and you may not even realize how high you can raise the bar until you go out with some birders who are better than you. You’ll realize that they don’t ignore the birds flying overhead, and that they are able to tell Grasshopper Sparrow from Savannah Sparrow consistently.”

6. Learn the difference between songs and calls

Finally, while it may seem obvious, an important but often neglected piece to the birding-by-ear puzzle is understanding the difference between songs and calls. Birds issue calls year-round to communicate a variety of information. Songs tend to be given primarily in the spring, and usually by males, to defend territory and attract mates. As such, songs are fre­quently more complex, longer, and more beautiful-sounding than the short, irregular notes of calls. Songs are also usually repeated in a regular pattern. Their length and complexity often make them easier to learn than calls, says Barry, because they give you more to latch on to.

Simply asking if a sound is a song or a call can go a long way, Iliff says. “If you learn a song and a call for each bird,” he explains, “that gives you twice as much of a starting point for learning other birds. So if you can at least start to break the sounds into those two categories, it can be really helpful.”

Because of the profusion of bird songs in the spring and early summer, skilled birders like Iliff, Barry, and Thompson often find binoculars unnecessary. Iliff estimates that 80 to 95 percent of his identifications during breeding season are based on sound. He simply walks along, barely looking up. Tour leader Thompson, who relies on his good ears to lead patrons to life birds, admits to doing “practically everything by listening.” The practice has become automatic for Barry, too. “In the spring, I honestly am not picking up my binoculars very often,” she admits.

The excitement in her voice grows as she explains the dramatic effect ear birding can have. “There’s nothing that can change your birding more than starting to get a handle on songs and calls,” she says, “because you find so many more birds. Especially during migration, there are thousands of songbirds flying over every night, and it’s kind of mysterious because we can’t see it — but we can listen to it.”

2.LISTEN FOR CALLS AND SONG

Listening out for a bird’s vocalizations is simple but it’s also easy to forget to do. The odds are, if you don’t make a conscious effort to listen, you won’t remember the bird’s song and you’ll miss out on one of the best bird identification tools there is. The good news is that you can listen to a bird while you look at it—it’s easy to do both at the same time. Look for bill movements along with the calls you hear, just to ensure you’re associating the correct song with the bird you’re trying to identify.

What’s more exciting than taking a birding trip to some new locale? As bird watchers, we dream of being able to visit some of the legendary birding spots we’ve heard about in magazines, online, or from our friends. It’s also fun to plan these trips. Doesn’t cost anything to fantasize, right? Here are 10 quick tips for planning your birding trip.

1. Choosing (a) destination(s). Decide up front whether you’re going to cover a lot of ground and visit lots of sites, or spend more time in fewer locations. That decision will help with budgeting, packing and reservations. When traveling, I always prefer to visit fewer places and spend more time birding and less time traveling. But you may feel the opposite, and that’s fine.
2. Study a regional field guide. Why spend your time trying to figure out which birds will be found in your birding destination area? Regional field guides exist for nearly every part of world and North America. Even experienced birders should take along an appropriate field guide when traveling to an unfamiliar birding destination—if only for the range maps.
3. Make a “hit list” of target birds. A list of birds you really want to see may help you choose your specific destinations. If this is going to be a birding trip, then plan your accommodations to be close to your target species. Look at a destination’s bird checklist before you book a room. No sense staying an hour’s drive from a sure bet on a life bird if you can stay within walking distance. Focus your trip on known sites for your target species. Nothing satisfies me like checking off a bird that I’ve wanted to see for years!
4. Consult online resources. Technology has enhanced our ability to find very specific information in seconds. This applies to birding information, too. Online databases such as eBird and state and local bird sighting email lists, conveniently assembled by the American Birding Association, can help you figure out the best locations to find your target species.
5. Consult local resources. Contacting a local, state, or regional bird club can put you in touch with local birders who know the best bird watching spots and the best times to visit. Resources such as the Bird Club Finder and Birdingpal.org can help you make these connections. All over the world, birders always seem willing and eager to help other birders.

   

6. Plot your route and schedule. Know exactly where you’re going before you get there so you don’t waste time strategizing when you could be birding. No matter where you are in the world, the birds are usually most active early and late in the day. Plan your schedule so that you are at good birding spots at these times. Midday hours can be used for traveling to your next destination. And it’s wise to allow for more travel time between sites than would seem to be required. It’s rare that a two-hour drive between birding spots can be made in just two hours—especially if you’re birding along the way. I always allow for at least 30 percent more time to get from point A to point B.
7. Take advantage of birding infrastructure. Are there existing birding trails associated with your destination? Is there a birding festival being held during the time you plan to visit? These can dramatically enhance your experience when visiting an unfamiliar area. Most birding trails in North America are built around the best regional birding hotspots, national wildlife refuges, state or provincial parks, and other birdy places. They typically offer directions from place to place, updated checklists and lists of recent sightings, birding hotlines, and information on expected or specialty bird species.
8. Gather gear. Review the climate and weather that’s expected at your destination and pack accordingly. The key is layering. If you’re flying, pack lighter. If you’re driving, that’s not such a big deal. Make sure you have the right footwear. Depending on the weather, critical gear can include sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, binocular rain guard, optics cleaning kit, prescription meds, emergency medical kit, and other personal stuff. Don’t forget your toothbrush!
9. Check the weather and plan accordingly. In this information-heavy age of ours, it’s fairly easy to check the seasonal weather in a far-flung destination. You may even be able to contact local birders for advice on the birding and weather conditions. On my first trip to California, I froze my bins off! I packed my clothing based upon the Hollywood version of California that I had seen on TV. I wasn’t prepared for the chilly winter winds and weak sun as I birded along the Pacific Coast. Brrr!

   

10. Be safe, have fun. It’s always a good idea to leave a printed copy of your planned itinerary with a friend or family member, especially since birding can take you well off the beaten path. Including phone numbers of your planned places of lodging is wise and mitigates the inexplicable lack of cellphone coverage that seems to plague great birding areas. As an aside: I always look for one or two interesting things to do or places to visit that have nothing to do with birds: museums, legendary restaurants, historical sites, and freaky roadside attractions. These can come in handy when the birding is slow or the weather is unsuitable for birding.

Whether you are taking a dedicated birding tour or just hoping to do some birding on a family vacation, it can be tricky to pack all your birding gear to take along. Proper packing is essential, however, to keep your equipment safe and minimize luggage difficulties.

What You Need to Pack

In addition to the typical clothing, toiletries and relaxation essentials you may pack for any getaway, there are certain birding accessories you must fit in your luggage on a birding trip.

When you are packing for a birding trip, don’t forget to include…

• Field Guide
  A field guide is essential for any birding travel, and depending on the trip length of your trip and number of destinations, you may need several different guides. Choose guides you are comfortable using and that are a good size for field use, without being too bulky or overwhelming for your luggage. If you do not have a guide for your destination, you may want to save space in your bags and pick one up at a local bookstore once you arrive. Local shopping is a great way to help the birding economy as well as find the very best field guide for your new travel hotspot.
   
• Optics
  Not only will you want to take along your favorite birding binoculars or trusty spotting scope, but you need to take along any critical accessories to use your optics most effectively. This may include a harness or carrying strap, cleaning tools, digiscoping adaptors or other tools that could come in handy.
   

• Camera
  Not all birders are skilled photographers, but even less-than-professional photographs can be useful for identifying birds. This can be especially crucial when seeing unfamiliar birds or birding in foreign regions, and you won’t want to forget your camera. Pack extra photo batteries, memory cards, cleaning tools or other camera accessories as well.
   

• Field Bag
  Your field bag is essential to tote your gear no matter where you may be birding. If you use a large field bag it may be able to double as luggage, otherwise it will need to fit inside your other bags. A canvas or cloth bag will generally use less space and fold more compactly, and be sure to declutter your field bag before a birding trip so you do not bring along any unnecessary items.
   
• Field Clothing
  The clothes you wear out birding are often significantly different than what you might wear while sightseeing, enjoying a fancy dinner, taking in a show or even just visiting family. You will want to bring along appropriate clothes for birding, taking into account the habitats you are likely to visit and the climate you will be birding in to choose the most comfortable apparel. Don’t forget an appropriate birding hat and sturdy shoes as well.
   
• Miscellaneous Supplies
  When you are out birding, you won’t want to be without appropriate insect repellent and sunscreen depending on the location and climate conditions where you are visiting. A water bottle for staying hydrated, a poncho for sudden rainshowers or suitable snacks to keep up your birding energy may also be very welcome additions to your birding travel supplies.

Packing Less

With so much to pack to ensure good birding, it can be a challenge to fit everything in your luggage. This is especially true if your travel will involve flying, with smaller and smaller restrictions on airline luggage and higher and higher baggage fees. • Go Digital
  Instead of packing multiple field guides, birding journals and notebooks, consider using a tablet or smartphone instead. There are many excellent birding and bird watching apps available, including national and regional field guides. If you use technology instead of books and paper, you can save significant room in your luggage.
   
• Do Double Duty
  Make wise choices for your birding gear to do as much double duty as possible. Nice quality field clothes, such as stylish cargo pants or capris, can also be worn for casual sightseeing days, and the shoes you wear in the birding field are also ideal for long walks around a new city. Your field bag may be able to double as an oversized travel purse or tote bag, eliminating one more thing from your luggage.
   

• Purchase as Needed
  Instead of packing for every contingency, consider purchasing items after you’ve arrived at your destination to save on luggage space. Consumable goods such as sunscreen, insect repellent, batteries and trail snacks can all be purchased instead of packed. Depending on the conditions of your birding, you may discover you don’t need as many of these supplies as you initially assumed.

Keeping Your Gear Safe

When luggage is lost or damaged, it can be devastating to also lose an expensive pair of binoculars, camera or a favorite field guide. There are easy ways to protect your gear, however, so it is safe from travel mishaps.

• Pack as much of your equipment as possible in carryon or hand luggage, particularly expensive or delicate gear or anything that may not be easily replaced.
   
• Use clothing to cushion your optics and pack them in the middle of luggage to minimize the risk of sudden drops or jarring.
   
• Keep your field guide handy to study while en route to your destination, which will help you become familiar with the birds you hope to find on your trip.
   
• Keep a separate list of serial numbers and identifying characteristics for expensive equipment. This will be vital if your gear is lost or stolen, and can help with recovery or reimbursement.
   
• Invest in quality luggage that can withstand the rigors of frequent travel without warping or breaking. This includes suitable luggage locks as well as identification tags on each bag.

Packing for any sort of travel can be a hassle, and adding birding gear to the preparations can be even more challenging. With thoughtful packing and careful choices, however, you can be well-prepared for birding travel without overwhelming your luggage or putting expensive equipment at risk from travel disasters.

Overview

Jinghong Port (景洪港) is located in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳傣族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省), China. It serves as an important port on the Lancang-Mekong River (澜沧江·湄公河) international shipping route. Approved for construction as a first-class national port by the State Council on July 24, 1993, it includes three key terminals: Jinghong Port Central Terminal (景洪港中心码头), Ganluo Terminal (关累码头), and Ganlanba Terminal (橄榄坝码头). In June 2001, the Ministry of Transport announced the official opening of Jinghong Port to foreign vessels, enabling commercial shipping between China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.

The Lancang-Mekong River runs through six countries, and international regional economic cooperation along this river has gained significant attention. This area is becoming an international investment hotspot, focused on resource development. Jinghong Port has gradually formed a waterway network that connects Jinghong as a hub to various Southeast Asian countries, establishing itself as the largest port in the Lancang-Mekong shipping route within China.

Jinghong Port Central Terminal

Jinghong Port Central Terminal (景洪港中心码头) is situated in Jinghong City (景洪市), Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Located along the Kunming-Mohan highway, it is only 5 kilometers from Banna International Airport (版纳国际机场). The terminal is 101 kilometers from the tripoint of China, Laos, and Myanmar, 334.6 kilometers from the Golden Triangle (金三角), and 402.1 kilometers from Huaysai, Laos (泰国清孔). It is 701.6 kilometers away from Luang Prabang, Laos (老挝琅勃拉邦).

The distance from Jinghong Port Central Terminal to Qing Sheng Port in Thailand (泰国清盛港) is 345 kilometers, with passenger ships taking just 9 hours and cargo ships 36 hours to traverse the route. With smooth navigation, complete facilities, and well-established customs and service agencies, it serves as an ideal choice for domestic and international traders engaged in water transport in the Lancang-Mekong river basin.

In accordance with the economic development vision of the Xishuangbanna Prefectural Committee and the Provincial Government, as well as the needs for future shipping and foreign trade, the Central Terminal is designed to have two berths: one for passenger transport and one for cargo. Ganluo Terminal

Ganluo Terminal (关累码头) is situated in the border trade area of Ganluo Town (关累镇), Mengla County (勐腊县), Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. It is an important terminal of Jinghong Port, located on the Chinese side of the border river with Myanmar. It is 174 kilometers by road from Jinghong and 81 kilometers by water from Jinghong Port. The Lancang-Mekong River Basin
