Rising from the valley, Jigong Mountain has three cliffs, towering into the sky long and narrow, only a two-feet path leading to the top. Standing on the top of the mountain, you’ll be amazed at the craftmanship of nature. Looking far into the distance, “the first peak of northeast Yunnan” – Qiaojia medicine hill stands in the southwest direction. Looking west, sometimes sunshine shining on the water surface of Jinsha River and sometimes the mist occupying all the area.

One year, when they were ready to get married, the drought devil suddenly burst into the Huanglian river cutting off the stream, the grass and trees withered, all the Miao people facing the survival danger. Later they knew that a man and a woman must sacrifice their lives to jump off a cliff, splattering their blood on the drought devil to save the people. The two young chose to exchange the green mountains and clear waters with their life. So the place where they lived before became waterfalls forever existing in the world.
The groups of waterfalls of Huanglian River have more than 40 various beautiful waterfalls distributing in the beauty spot which covers an area of 25 square kilometers. Here are also thousands of peaks and gullies competing with each other, and even limestone caverns like White Elephant Cave. The mountains, waters, forests, and caves make one integrated mass; ruggedness, elegance, strangeness and remoteness make this place a real wonder.

Shuishangwutai Waterfall: Also called The Stage in Water, it’s named after a huge stone platform resembling a stage. In fact it’s a flat slate slanting westward. Underground spring overflows out of the crannies, runs across the slate and finally falls into the swag. Over the slate covers projecting cliffs and around it circles the spring. All these would remind you of a stage on the water.
Welcoming Waterfalls: Two Waterfalls Welcoming Visitors is also named Suona Waterfalls (suona: a kind of Chinese music instrument with loud and clear sound) because visitors always hear its noisy sound first before they can see it.

First two steps go in the same direction with a fall of nearly one hundred meters. The third step turns towards Virgin Waterfall with a fall of more than forty meters, playing the role of a beau.

The 13.86GW Xiluodu hydroelectric power plant on Jinsha Jiang River, China, was inaugurated in September 2013. It was fully operational in June 2014, becoming the world’s third biggest hydroelectric power plant. The project includes a dam, an underground power-generation unit and a flood discharge structure. It is mainly developed for power generation, and sediment and flood control while also improving the downstream navigation of the river. Xiluodu power plant offsets approximately 150m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. It reduces the consumption of 41 million tonnes of coal for electricity generation. However, the project displaced approximately 180,000 people.
The Three Gorges Project Corporation, which developed China’s biggest hydropower plant Three Gorges, also developed the Xiluodu power plant. The Xiluodu plant generates 64bkWh of electricity a year.
The Xiluodu Dam is located on the Jinsha (Upper Yangtze) River as it exits the mountainous region of the Hengduan Mountains and Yungui Plateau and enters the Sichuan Basin. This part of the Jinsha flows between the Daliang Mountains in Sichuan on the left (northwest) bank, and the Wulian Feng in Yunnan on the right (southeast) bank. The Jinsha falls to an elevation of 400 m (1,300 ft) above sea level here while mountains rise more than 2,000 m (6,600 ft) above the Jinsha on either side.
The Xiluodu Dam is an arch dam on the Jinsha River, i.e. the upper course of the Yangtze in China. It is located near the town of Xiluodu in Yongshan County of Yunnan Province but the dam straddles into Leibo County of Sichuan Province on the opposite side of the river. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation and its power station has an installed capacity of 13,860 MW. Additionally, the dam provides for flood control, silt control and its regulated water releases are intended to improve navigation downstream. Construction on the dam and power station began in 2005 and the first generator was commissioned in 2013, the last in 2014. It is operated by China Yangtze Power and is currently the third-largest power station with the fourth-tallest dam in the world.
The Xiluodu power plant generates roughly 64TWh of power a year. The power is transmitted via the Xiluodu-Zhejiang and Xiluodu-Guangdong overhead transmission lines.
The Xiluodu-Guangdong HVDC project is a double 500-kV bipole system with a transmission capacity of 6,400MW. The power is transferred from Zhaotong station in Xiluodo to Conghua station in Guangdong via 1,286km-long transmission line.
The electricity generated from the left bank power house is sold to State Grid Corporation of China. The electricity from the right bank is sold to China Southern Power Grid. The respective electricity sales contracts were signed in July 2013.

Yunnan Normal University (Chinese: 云南师范大学; YNNU) is in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province. Yunnan Normal University (YNNU) is a key university of Yunnan Province, with a long history and a great tradition. It is a higher institution co-funded by the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Government of Yunnan and one of the 100 universities funded by the National Key Project for the Quality Enhancement of the Higher Institutions in Central and West China.
Established in 1938 as the ‘National Normal College of Southwestern Union University’ based on Beijing University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University, it was named ‘National Kunming Normal College’ in 1946 when the faculties returned to the north.
After the war broke out in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved to Kunming and merged into the National Southwest Associated University, which consisted of the Schools of Humanities, Science, Engineering, Business and Law, and the Teachers College. Following the end of the war, the three component universities moved back to their original sites in the north, but the Teachers College, renamed National Kunming Teachers College, stayed behind to become an independent institution. In 1950, the word “National” was dropped from its name. A few decades later, in 1984, it acquired its present name, Yunnan Normal University.
In the past 75 years, YNNU has graduated more than 200,000 students for the country and is thus known as the “Cradle of Teachers on the Red-soil Plateau”.

Yunnan University (Chinese: 云南大学; pinyin: Yúnnán dàxué) is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in China. Its main campuses are located in the provincial capital city of Kunming. It has been developed into the only “National Key University” in Yunnan province, having trained over 17,000 specialist professionals in various fields. It is a Chinese Ministry of Education Class B Double First Class University.
Founded in December 1922, Yunnan University started to enroll in April 1923. It began as a privately run institution called the “University of the Eastern Land” and its name has changed six times since then. Currently, Yunnan University is one of the “Project 211” universities in China authorized by the central government to be specially developed. Yunnan University has also been included on the list of the key national universities for the “China Western Development” program.
Yunnan University Science Park (YNUSP) was established as an experimental site of University Science Park in 1999 and was awarded the status of national university science park in May 2001. The Park is supported by Yunnan University, Kunming University of Science & Technology and Yunnan Normal University.
Yunnan University was founded in December 1922 by General Tang Jiyao, the warlord who controlled Yunnan province in the 1920s. The University began to enroll students on April 20, 1923. It started as the privately run “Dong Lu University” (Dong Lu means “Eastern Road” or “Eastern Land”). The name has changed six times in the past 80 years, but the present name dates from 1934. It is known locally as “Yunda”. Following typical abbreviations for Chinese universities, “Yun” is an abbreviation of “Yunnan” and “da” is an abbreviation of daxue, the Chinese word for “university”.
Yunnan University became famous during World War II. Since Kunming was not directly involved in the fighting, a great many excellent Chinese scholars, in particular from Beijing and Nanjing, many of these with PhDs from well-known American universities, retreated from the northern war zone. Most of them taught at a newly created National Southwestern Associated University (also called “Lianda”). Several of them, however, for various reasons, ended up teaching at Yunnan University. There they found a distinct French influence. The president of Yunnan University had a PhD from the Sorbonne. The university is also famous for its French language and civilization research. The present of the school of foreign language is honored as “Chevalier des Palmes Académiques(knight of academic golden Palm in 2011.
From 1937 through to 1947, the noted mathematician Professor Xiong Qinglai was invited to become the President of Yunnan University, under whose leadership Yunnan University was restructured along the same academic model as Tsinghua University. A cluster of famous scholars, such as Fei Xiaotong, Chu Tunan, Chen Xingshen, Hua Luogen, Yan Jici, Feng Youlan, Lü Shuxiang came to teach at Yunnan University, and thus gradually turned the institution into a general university that had exerted a certain degree of academic influence at home and abroad. In 1946, Yunnan University had five faculties and 18 academic departments, and was included in the Concise Encyclopædia Britannica as one of the fifteen most prestigious universities in China.
During the early 1950s, the government began reforming the Chinese education system which had affected every university. Most departments were weeded out, and by 1958, there were only two faculties and six academic departments left in Yunnan University. Again like all other Chinese universities, Yunnan experienced a difficult period from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s due to events such as the Cultural Revolution. However, the situation improved remarkably thereafter when the reform era began in the late 1970s.
According to his confession, biochemistry student Ma Jiajue killed his four roommates between February 13 and 15 in 2004. On February 23 of that year, the bodies were discovered.[6] The Intermediate Court of Kunming People’s sentenced Ma Jiajue to death. On Thursday June 17, 2004, Ma Jiajue was executed.
