Dali Paragliding First Experience: Dreams and Courage in the Air

Dali, a place full of poetic beauty, not only offers stunning landscapes but also a thrilling paragliding experience. Here’s a personal account of my first paragliding experience in Dali, which I hope will provide helpful information for those interested in paragliding.

How to Contact the Paragliding Base? ?

I first discovered the paragliding camp through their official social media account. After following them for almost a year, I finally added their customer service on WeChat. While the process took some time, the anticipation grew with every photo and video they posted.

Where is the Base? ?

The base is located in Weishan (巍山), Dali. You can directly search for “Dali Nanzhao International Flight Camp” (大理南诏国际飞行营地) on your navigation. The round-trip drive from Dali Ancient Town to the base takes about 4 hours. Including the paragliding experience time, the entire trip lasts about 6 hours.

How to Get There? ?

The camp is very accessible, and even solo travelers can arrange transportation with a dedicated driver. However, this pick-up service requires purchasing a photography package. The 150 RMB package includes 360-degree tracking camera service, which I found to be well worth the cost, especially for a first-time paragliding experience—who wouldn’t want to capture such a memorable moment? Even if you don’t plan to opt for the photography package, considering the 4-hour round-trip drive and winding mountain roads, taking a taxi may be quite expensive. Therefore, the photography package offers good value for money.

How Much Does It Cost? ?

The cost for paragliding is 780 RMB, and the photography package costs an additional 150 RMB, bringing the total to 930 RMB. There are no hidden fees during the entire process.

How Long is the Flight? ⏳

The flight time mainly depends on the airflow conditions. When the wind is stable, the flight can last between 10-30 minutes, though most people typically fly for about 10 minutes. I personally flew for about 10 minutes, and although it wasn’t long, it was enough for me to experience the joy of flying.

Is It Scary or Dangerous? ?

The winding mountain road leading to the camp was a bit bumpy, which did raise some concerns. However, the driver, a skilled and brave woman, made the journey much more comfortable. The instructors were very professional, some of whom even work with celebrities for paragliding services. The instructor reassured me by saying, “We are here to take you for fun, not to take risks with your life.” This made me feel much more at ease. Every activity carries some risk, but as long as you follow the rules and listen to the instructions, it’s safe. They also provide insurance for tourists, and the mountain insurance is issued promptly.

Tips ?

It’s generally better to fly in the morning, as the wind tends to be stronger in the afternoon, making it unsuitable for paragliding. We decided to contact them the day before and left around 8:00 AM, returning around 2:00 PM. There is no food available on-site, so it’s recommended to bring your own water and snacks. We didn’t bring any food, and by the time we returned in the afternoon, we were quite hungry.

Pre-Flight Preparations

When reporters arrived at the base, the instructors were busy preparing the site, checking equipment, confirming weather conditions, and conducting test flights. According to Cai Liang (蔡亮), a paragliding instructor with Yunnan Lefei Sports Development Co., Ltd. (云南乐飞体育发展有限公司), wind speeds between 2 to 6 meters per second are the safest for paragliding. From numerous tests, it is evident that the flying conditions at Yangpo Paragliding Flight Camp are excellent.

Best Flying Conditions

“The biggest advantage of Yangpo Paragliding Flight Camp is that it stays warm in winter, and the wind direction is stable. During the flight, you can enjoy the stunning views of the towering mountains, green rivers, and beautiful cityscape of the Nujiang Grand Canyon,” said Cai Liang. The best time for paragliding at the camp is from 10 AM to 5 PM, and the activity is available to people between the ages of 3 and 60. From December 28, 2024, to January 2, 2025, 51 people have already experienced paragliding flights. To ensure safety, each flight is accompanied by an instructor, and ground staff assist with landing instructions. Each flight lasts about 18 minutes.

Development and Future Plans

The Yangpo Paragliding Flight Camp project is managed by Nujiang Cultural and Tourism Group Co., Ltd. (怒江文化旅游集团有限公司) and is currently in the pre-construction testing phase. According to Hua Guozhi (华国之), the head of the outdoor sports project at Nujiang Cultural and Tourism Group, the construction of the Yangpo Paragliding Flight Camp will be completed later this year. Once the project is completed, the group aims to develop the camp into a prominent winter paragliding tourism destination and demonstration base in Yunnan Province (云南省).

Upcoming Water Sports

In addition to paragliding, water sports experiences are also being developed. The planned projects include speedboats, jet skis, and flying carpet experiences along the Dragon Teng Square (龙腾广场) to Xiaoshaba section (小沙坝段). Hua Guozhi emphasized that the aim is to integrate both airborne and water-based activities to create a series of outdoor sports offerings, allowing tourists to fully experience the joy of outdoor adventures while exploring the wonders of the Nujiang Grand Canyon.

Future Outdoor Projects

Looking ahead, Nujiang Cultural and Tourism Group will focus on building the “World’s Most Beautiful Grand Canyon” and “Secret Nujiang · Outdoor Paradise” brands. The goal is to develop a diverse range of outdoor projects, including hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and other adventure sports, to create an outdoor tourism industry cluster unique to Nujiang. Yunnan has become a rising destination for paragliding enthusiasts. According to Fengniao, a seasoned paraglider in the region, Yunnan is an ideal location for the sport. “The province has over 200 active paragliders, with 50 skilled enough to fly independently,” Fengniao explained.

Paragliding in Yunnan began in the mid-1990s but has seen slow progress. Today, over 10 paragliding sites are available across the province in areas like Shiping, Yuanjiang, Yuxi, Gejiu, Gasa, Qujing, and Jinggu.

Why Yunnan is Perfect for Paragliding

Yunnan offers the perfect combination of open, hilly terrain and mild weather conditions that are ideal for paragliding. As Fengniao puts it, “Planes take off or land against the wind, and so do paragliders.” The wide variety of sites across the province makes it a go-to location for gliding.

The Journey Begins

Early last Wednesday morning, GoKunming met up with a few friends on Jiaoling Lu for a trip out to Anning. Red-eyed and sleepy, we all needed a coffee or two, but none of Kunming’s cafés had opened yet. As we packed into the van, there was a slight giddy feeling, reminiscent of skipping school.

However, beneath the excitement, there was also a palpable sense of nervousness — we were about to try something new and intimidating: paragliding for the first time.

Paragliding in China

Paragliding, known in China as huáxiángsǎn (滑翔伞) or “gliding parachute,” is a relatively new sport in the country. It started gaining popularity around a decade ago but hasn’t yet attracted the massive following seen in places like the US, Europe, or even South Korea and Japan.

“It’s been so windy lately that I had to cancel a recent flight,” Mike explained, “But today should be just right.”

Preparing for Takeoff

After leaving Kunming, we stopped in Anning’s hot springs area for some snacks before heading toward Longsan Mountain, where we would launch. Nervous excitement buzzed among the group.

After a bumpy ride up to the flat top of Longsan Shan, we disembarked and gathered around as Mike set up the 43-square-meter nylon airfoil, which he referred to as a “wing.” There was a lot of deliberation as we decided who would take off first.

The First Flight

GoKunming techie Matthew was the first to strap into the paragliding harness, which allows for semi-easy running during takeoff and a comfortable seat once airborne. Mike, originally from Canada, had already logged around 500 tandem flights over the past three years and over 200 solo hours annually in Asia and North America.

Battling the Winds

After a quick briefing on taking off and checking the harness, Mike waited for the perfect wind. Matthew started moving forward toward the mountain’s edge, but the wind wasn’t right. After a few aborts, the fourth attempt succeeded, and Matthew and Mike were airborne.

After a few unsuccessful attempts, the winds finally cooperated, sending Matthew and Mike about a kilometer up in no time.

High Above Longsan Shan

After Mike and Matthew landed, the rest of us took turns launching. Although not all of us caught the big thermals, the experience was exhilarating. The last two in our group managed to catch major thermals, quickly soaring up to nearly 4 kilometers above sea level. At one point, the altitude gauge was emitting a high-pitched noise, indicating an ascent rate of six meters per second.

The lucky high-fliers spent about an hour gliding across the sky. When they landed, they were slightly dazed but happy to have flown.

At one point, while flying north of Shangri-la, the winds got increasingly turbulent, and he struggled to find a safe landing spot. Eventually, he ended up landing in a sandy riverbank, attracting the attention of local police.
