Baga Township (八嘎乡) is located in the southeastern part of Yanshan County (砚山县), within Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (文山壮族苗族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). It borders Xisa Town (西洒镇) and Bangu Township (蚌谷乡) of Xichou County (西畴县) to the southeast, Zhuilijie Town (追栗街镇) of Wenshan City (文山县) to the southwest, Panlong Township (盘龙乡) and Zhela Township (者腊乡) to the northwest, and Bang’e Township (蚌峨乡) to the northeast. The township government is located in Baga Village (八嘎村), 33 kilometers from the county seat. The total administrative area covers 377.6 square kilometers.
History and Culture
“Baga” (八嘎) originates from the Zhuang language: “ba” means “mouth,” and “ga” means “confluence,” indicating a place where small rivers meet. Baga Township (八嘎乡) has a long history. In 1910 (Qing Dynasty, Xuantong Year 2), it belonged to Section 7 of the Eastern District of Wenshan County (文山县). In 1935, when Yanshan County (砚山县) was established, it was designated as Area 2, Baga Jia (八嘎甲). In 1950, it became Baga Township (八嘎乡) under Area 4 of Panlong (盘龙), Yanshan County (砚山县). It was merged into Wenshan County (文山县) in 1958, restored to Yanshan County (砚山县) in 1961, and officially became Baga Township (八嘎乡) in 1988.
