Yubeng is a tiny Tibetan village in Northern Yunnan that might just be the most stunning place in Asia. Snow covered peaks surround lush green valleys filled with birds, butterflies, flowers and prayer flags. Situated in the back of Meili Snow Mountain, it has a unique geographical environment with only 20 households and one way access to the outside world. It’s more than 200 kilometers from Shangrila to Yubeng village which can only be accessible by bus and car-rental.

How to Get to Yubeng Village from Shangrila?

By Bus

Shangrila-Deqin-Xidang Hot Spring

You can take a long-distance bus to Deqin County from Shangri-La. Deqin county is 183 kilometers away from Shangrila city. Bus is the main means of transportation for locals and tourists to get around in Shangrila. There are 5 regular buses running from Shangri-La to Deqin County every day with the fare of 68 CNY and duration of 5 hours, which departs at 8:20, 9:20, 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30. There are also minivans at the bus station that leave when they are full (the drivers are shouting “Deqin, Deqin!” to passers by). It’s 100 yuan per person. The minivans are a bit faster than the bus.

After you arrive at Deqin County, you can take a long-distance bus at 07:00 or 15:00 pm to Xidang Village or you may rent a car to get there. It is 8 kilometers from Xidang Village to Xidang Hot Springs. Yubeng Village is only accessible from Xidang Hot Springs by walking or riding a horse. It takes you five to six hours to get to Yubeng Village on foot.

Shangrila-Deqin-Feilaisi-Xidang Hot Spring

From Deqin, it is easy to get a taxi to Feilaisi (20 minutes) where you can find a guesthouse and make further arrangements to get to the start of the hike in Xidang Village the next day. Sometimes, the bus from Shangri-la to Deqin will continue to Feilaisi for an additional 5 CNY.

From Feilaisi, there are minivans leaving every morning for 150RMB (for a full minivan, which usually seats 7) to Xidang hot springs, which is the starting point of the trek to Yubeng. There is also a public bus leaving to Xidang hot springs at 8 am from the gate of viewing platform, for 20RMB per person.

Introduction: Located near major tourist attractions, Shangri La Bus Station is a small while very busy station. Buses from Lijiang, Dali, Kunming and etc are all terminates here. Meanwhile, people would have to gather here to catch buses to leave Shangri La.

Baishuitai is located in Baidi Village, Sanba Township, southeast of Shangri-La City. It is 101 kilometers away from Shangri-La and and 2,380 meters above sea level. How to Get to Baishuitai from Tiger Leaping Gorge?

By Bus

There is a daily bus running between Tiger Leaping Gorge and Baishuitai at a price of 55 RMB. It departs at 12:00. Tickets can be purchased at Tina’s Guest House or Tibet Guest House. 

From Middle Gorge, you can flag down a van going East (Further down the gorge) and ask to go to Baishuitai (40–50 RMB). If there are lots of cars you can try hitchhiking as well. Or arrange a car with your hostel.

Being around 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Kunming(昆明), Stone Forest(石林) is known for its extraordinary karst land-form. It is also one of the most famous scenic areas in Yunnan, which can be easily reached by coach and train.

How to Get to Stone Forest from Kunming?

By Long-Distance Coach

There are several direct coaches which run to Stone Forest from Kunming East Coach Terminal(昆明东部汽车客运站), and the ticket price is around CNY 34. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

By Trains

There is about 20 high-speed trains and 3 normal-speed train from Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South Railway Station to Shilin. It takes about 20 minutes by high-speed train with a cost of CNY18-28.5. The normal-speed train costs CNY12.5-18.5 with the journey about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Please be noted that after you have arrived at the  Shilin Railway Station (石林), you will still need to transfer to Stone Forest by shuttle bus which depart at the exit of Shilin Railway Station. It costs CNY10.

• Shilin County has three railway station which are Shilin Station, Shilin South Railway Station and Shilin West Railway Station. Please check before you buy the tickets.

By Subway

The first phase of subway line 6 has been put into operation in June 2012. Tourists can take the subway located at the airport and arrive at downtown area. The open hours are 06:20 to 22:20 and it departs every 20-25 minutes at the cost of CNY 15. With a total distance of 18km, the first phase of Kunming subway line 6 is the first rail transit in the city, connecting the downtown area and Changshui International Airport.

The stops of the first phase of subway line 6 includes East Bus Station(东部汽车站), Dabanqiao(大板桥), Airport Front(机场前), Airport Center(机场中心). And the stops for the second phase which is expected to operate by the end of 2019 are Tangzixiang(塘子巷), Tuodong Stadium(拓东体育馆), Juhua(菊华), Juhua General Transport Hub(菊华综合枢纽站).

By Taxi

It’s the most convenient way going to downtown area from the airport. In daytime, the flag-down fare is CNY 8 for the first 3 km and CNY 1.8 per km for the rest of the journey. At night (22:00-06:00 next day), it is CNY 9.6 for the first 3 km and CNY 2.1 per km for the rest. It takes about 50 minutes from Changshui Airport to the city center area at the cost of around CNY 100.

Characters of the four seasons in Kunming

Spring is warm and dry in Kunming and quite comfortable. Fresh breezes and quick evaporation create beautifully sunny days. Summer days are not very hot; most being cloudy or rainy. “Coming-of-Age Ceremony” is a ritual performed in ancient China as part of the aristocratic education for children. According to the “Book of Rites”: “Upon coming of age, dance with an elephant, learn archery, and practice chariot riding.” In ancient times, this ceremony was conducted when a person reached the age of 15. In modern times, it is suitable for students after completing primary school or entering the first year of junior high school. The purpose is to “bid farewell to childhood, express gratitude, and set goals,” marking the transition into adolescence. Junior high school is a critical period of differentiation for students, making this ceremony crucial for cultivating their character.

The process of the Coming-of-Age Ceremony includes:

1. Platform Ritual: The master of ceremonies is dressed in ceremonial attire, and the ceremonial music is played.
2. Preparation to Cross the Lingxing Gate: After a purification ritual, the students prepare to cross the Lingxing Gate. Lingxing, also known as the Literary Star, refers to the ancient astronomical “Wen Xing,” or Wen Qu Xing, believed to be Confucius descending to the mortal world. Passing through the Lingxing Gate symbolizes receiving the teachings of Confucius, gaining the essence of Confucianism and wisdom.
3. Incense Offering: The master of ceremonies, representing parents and the young students, offers incense. This involves three bows and nine prostrations.
4. Cinnabar Dotting to Awaken Wisdom: Cinnabar symbolizes wisdom. The dotting of cinnabar marks the opening of the door to wisdom. This act is a symbolic invitation to interpret various classics and gain profound knowledge. Opening the wisdom gate leads to keen perception and clear vision, fostering a spirit of diligent learning.
5. Initiation and First Writing: With the help of their parents, the children earnestly write a dignified character in front of Confucius. This act signifies the beginning of learning how to be a good person and the commencement of dedicated study.
6. Respecting the Sage and Bowing to the First Teacher: The ceremony includes three bows, symbolizing humility, eagerness to learn, developing a wise heart, understanding and reasoning, and gaining insight and wisdom.
