Caves in Yunnan
Jiuxiang Cave has about a hundred karst caves and the most wonderful in-cave scenes in China. The caves in Jiuxiang fall into 4 cave clusters: Sanjiao Cave, Dashang Cave, Diehong Cave and Dasha Dam Cave. 66 out of the numerous caves in the area are profitably exploitable and the karst cave cluster is the largest of its kind on Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. The caves in the area are praised for their grandeur, wonder grotesquerie and natural beauty.
Jiuxiang Caves is 20 sq km in area and includes 5 tourist attractions, Diehong Bridge (5 km southeast from Jiuxiang Street, famous for the karst caves, the twin waterfalls and the huge natural stone dam cluster), Dasha Dam (consisting of picturesque karst caves and thick forest), Sanjiao Cave (5 km north of Jiuxiang Street, famous for the karst caves), Alu Long [a scenic area 6 km west of Jiuxiang Street, famous for the excavated Yi Nationality cliff paintings of Qin 221BC-206BC) and Han (206BC-220AD) dynasties] and Mingyue (meaning the bright moon) Lake.
Jiuxiang, the birthplace of the aboriginal Yi ethnic people, has a strong minority custom color, a long cultural history, and widely spread old myths and tales. These include Hunting Festival, the Worship the White Dragon Festival, Love Song Contest, Bullfighting, Wrestling, Sanxian Dance (Sanxian is a three-stringed plucked instrument), Rattle Stick Dance and so on.
Yincui Valley
It is located in the north of Jiuxiang Scenic Spot. Its total length is 1 km. Ii got its name for the the lush vegetation in it. It is also called Lover Valley. They said that it was place for young girls and boys to sing love songs. Girls stood at the right side and boys stood at the left side. They sang songs until they found their right persons. There’s a river named Maitian River flowing in the valley. It’s a branch of Nanpan River. People can take a boat for a distance of 700 meters.
Lying Dragon Cave

It is a slant underground hall. Its height is about 20-30 meters and its length and width are more than 200 meters. Its volume is 1 million cubic meters. It is a typical example hall of Karst caves. There’s no any support in the hall and it can be said the most big underground hall among the carst caves.
Jiuxiang Scenic Spot can be visited all the year round for the warm climate. In spring, flowers are in full bloom, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. In summer, people can take a boat there and step into the caves to avoid summer heat.
Jiuxiang Cave is about 108 kilometers away from Kunming, and it’s very convenient to get there from the city center. There are many public buses driving from the city center to Jiuxiang, and public bus will take about 1.5 hours to get there.

‣ About Fairyland Cave
This Fairyland Cave is located in Xishuangbanna Mengyuan, Mengla Town. It is awarded with the 5A accredition under the tourism board standard. ‣ About Legend
There is a legend related to this cave. During the Three Kingdom period, Zhugeliang, the escapist of the army was amazed by the wonders of the cave and named it the “Fairyland”. There is a “Sheng – Shaped Door” which is named the No. 1 entrance in China, which signifies wealth and good fortune. This entrance door was built by a patriotic overseas Chinese to promote the Chinese culture.
‣ About Rainforest
Besides being a tourist spot, it’s also a reserved area for protected tropical rainforest and the base for the Chinese Science Education. It’s the best preserved tropical rainforest ecosystem as it is rich in biological diversity. The country’s most protected plants such as Dracaena Angustifolia, Tetrameles etc are found here. Other significant plant is the giant tree which is of the size of more than 10 men figure. Ravine rainforests also exist aplenty here.
‣ About Caves
There are more than 100 caverns in the Fairyland Cave. The longest is about 10km. The paths to the caverns are wavy and winding. It has an underground galaxy atmosphere. Stone forest, stalagmites, stone shoot, underground rivers and other natural landscapes are found here. It’s also a natural dwelling for bats, birds, fish, crabs and other animals. With the combination of the unique lime shoot forest, the rainforest and outstanding landscapes, it is said to be a perfect natural wonderland.
Wanfu Cave
The “Bayeux Scripture” and the “Banna History” recorded that there was a cave called “Baojiaoniutong” or “Tanhuaihaoxiang” by Dai, and now is named “Wanfudong” is about 3360m long and 88m in height. This cave has a strange structure. It’s very narrow with only one man passing passage. It has magical legend; it says that Mengyuan was a cattle fighter kingdom. There was once a fighting tribe entered the cave with a large number of treasures and until today, it has not been found, and chances are you might stumble upon these treasures when you visit this place. A Laoguo Buddhist monk had placed a Buddha’s statue and it has attracted many tourists here for blessings by drinking, wearing, dwelling all the blessed and holy Buddhist objects.
An adventurous expedition into this colourful and rugged cave will unveil this mysterious cave which is very unique and sacred.
In the main hall of the cave, the stalagmites have formed many shapes. The significant shapes are the “openly water drinking horse”, “flying eagle”, “camel by the god side”, “monkey playing”, “peacock”, “elephant” and etc. The most auspicious and wonderful structure is the Buddha with a sky pointing fingers which is said to bless whoever encounters it. There is a huge Sakyamuni statue with a big dragon on the Buddha’s crown. Legends have it that Sakyamuni Buddha brought along this dragon to protect the cave. Also there is a bell, if it’s hit by a mallet, it will have a clear ringing sound. Another sacred spot is the “Saint Pool” that the Buddha used to cure patients with various diseases. The level of the holy water is always maintained high regardless of seasons and the temperature of the cave is always maintained at 21°.
When you passed through the Wanfu Cave, you will reach an underground river. The reflection of the light to the surface of the water and flowing sound of the river seems like a concert in a galaxy cave.

South Cave or Nandong Cave is a natural landscape area that is magnificent, splendid, strange and beautiful.It is embraced on three sides by green hills and one side by the dam. The hills here are all high and steep. The height of the highest peak is 1,300 meters above sea level. The altitude difference is 230 meters between the top of the peak and the dam, and is 94.5 meters between the top of the peak and water level of the lake. A meter-gage railway (Yunnan-Vietnam Railway) that leads to the southern gate goes through the area directly. Three underground rivers with a steady daily flow come out from the mountains and join together to form the South Cave River. The reaches of the three underground rivers cover an area of over 3,000 square kilometers. The area has strange and beautiful karst caves that are typical examples of karst landforms.

The Dalongdong Cave is located on Jiulong mountain, 10 kilometers northern suburb of Zhaotong city, which has 13 peaks and 9 mountain valleys, with overlapping peaks and green forests. Inside the deep valley under the mountain foot is a big cave, from which a pool of clear water flows out, known as “Dalongdong cave(big dragon hole)”. On the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon rises, it will be reflected in Longquan(dragon spring), and the moon in Longquan will be reflected on the rocks in the cave, forming a unique natural landscape of “three moons”. It is one of the eight sceneries of Zhaoyang district of Zhaotong city, named “Longdong Xiyue(dragon hole sucking moon)” or “Longquan Yingyue(dragon spring reflecting moon)”.
It is a natural forest park and a summer resort for sightseeing, playing, boating and fishing. There are many ancient architectural communities, with carved beams, painted platform, and colored pavilion. Inside the cave built a Guanyin palace(观音殿), and theatrical stage outside the cave. Yingchun pavilion(迎春阁) and Suxin Garden(素馨园) stand separately at the south and north of the mountain. On every eighth day of the second lunar month, the locals will hold the traditional festival activity of “play in the dragon hole”.

Xiyou Cave, a beautiful and magical karst geological cave, is a masterpiece of nature and a sparkling gem in Yunnan’s tourism circle. The scenic area includes three main attractions: Xiyou Cave, Water Curtain Cave, and Guanyin Cave.
Xiyou Cave, located halfway up the scenic area, extends over 2,000 meters. The marvels inside the cave can be described as unparalleled in the world, featuring stalactites, stone pillars, and gurgling springs, with colors ranging from golden to azure and transparent. Within the cave, one can find openings, and within these openings, the sky and springs await. The main attractions within Xiyou Cave include Fairy Cave (妖精洞), Divine Field (神田), East Sea Dragon Palace (东海龙宫), and Spider Cave (盘丝洞). Driving Route:
Departing from Kunming, take Fengyuan Road — Hangrui Expressway — Jingkun Expressway — Xiangshui Road — G108 — Xiuping Road — Dongshan Road, driving 150 meters to reach Luquan Yi and Miao Autonomous County.
Luquan County is one of the counties under the jurisdiction of Kunming City, Yunnan Province. The “Caohai Cave” (草海溶洞) is located in Caohai Village, Zhongping Town, Luquan County. It lies beside Line 4 of the Zhongwu Expressway, approximately 50 kilometers from the county seat and about 124 kilometers from Kunming City, taking nearly 1.5 hours by car.
Main Route:
Travel via the Kunwu Expressway, connecting to Luquan, then proceed along Ludalu to Zhongping Town and from Zhongping Town to Caohai Cave. The roads are asphalt and in good condition. The development of “Caohai Cave” is ongoing, making this a promising attraction to watch for future updates.
The cave is situated beneath the second-layer limestone of the Permian Qixia Formation, developed as a horizontal cave. It extends in a direction of 210° to 250°, with a currently measured length of over 300 meters and an elevation of 215 meters. The cave’s width typically ranges from 8 to 25 meters and its height from 1.5 to 10 meters.
The cave’s cross-section includes semicircular, inverted triangular, and elliptical shapes. During the rainy season, the cave floor features a seasonal dark riverbed. A deep spring river with a flow rate of 30 liters per second emerges at the cave entrance. Stalactites, stone curtains, and stone waterfalls adorn the cave’s ceiling and walls, while the cave floor contains stone pillars and stalagmites.
Though the development of Caohai Cave has just begun, the stones that have not fallen have been around for over a thousand years. Birds still nest in the trees, while streams continue to flow through the valleys, under a blue sky adorned with white clouds. Livestock peacefully graze on the mountains. However, the era of Caohai truly deserves expression, contrasting with the past. As time flows forward, human influence remains limited, yet it is hoped that Caohai can continue to inherit its simple and profound spirit.
Baoshi Cave, located in Panlong Village (盘龙村), Sandan Town (散旦镇), Fumin County (富民县), is approximately 33 kilometers from Kunming. This limestone cave system comprises multiple caves, including Long Cave (龙洞), Xianren Cave (仙人洞), and Fulin Cave (福临洞), with Baoshi Cave being the main attraction. The cave is named for the abundance of colorful and unique agate stones found within, and it features a stunning variety of stalactites.
Visitors must walk for about 30 minutes to reach the foot of the mountain after arriving in Sandan Town. The hike to Baoshi Cave takes around 10 minutes.
