Wanzi Miao Ethnic Culture Protection Area in Weixin County, Zhaotong

Wanzi Miao Cultural Protection Village (湾子苗族文化保护村) is located in Shuitian Township (水田乡), Weixin County (威信县), Zhaotong City (昭通市), Yunnan Province (云南省). The village lies three kilometers west of Shuitian Township at the base of a semi-ringed mountain, about 36 kilometers from Zhaoxi (扎西), the county seat of Weixin. Surrounded by mountains, the village is characterized by dense native shrubbery and forest. Traditional Miao-style dwellings are built along the slopes, creating a compact and orderly layout.

The village combines natural and cultural landscapes, featuring the Sacred Crape Myrtle Tree (紫薇神树), the “Ren”-shaped Stone Wall (“人”字形石墙), fortress-style Ancestral House (老祖屋), Xianren Pond (仙人塘), Wanzi Waterfall (湾子飞瀑), and underground karst caves. Its traditional customs, festivals, costumes, dances, and handicrafts are well preserved. In August 2009, it was officially designated by the Yunnan Provincial Government as a Miao Cultural Protection Village.
