Conclusion
With its commitment to quality and a focus on both domestic and international markets, Haiwan Tea Industry continues to grow and evolve, establishing itself as a notable player in the tea industry.
Over the years, Haiwan Tea Industry has received strong support from various friendly organizations, including the Anning Municipal Government and the Lushui Town Government. As a result, the company has grown significantly and has cumulatively produced nearly 4,000 tons of Pu-erh tea, establishing a certain level of enterprise scale. Currently, it possesses an annual production capacity of over 1,000 tons of Pu-erh tea, including 500 tons for export and 500 tons for domestic sales, with an annual output value exceeding 20 million yuan.
Haiwan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. was established in November 1999. After nearly three years of effort, it formed Yunnan Haiwan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. in October 2002 in the Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone, covering an area of 8 acres. In the same year, the company obtained the “Export Food Production Enterprise Hygiene Registration Certificate” issued by the China Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. In June 2003, it acquired the right to engage in import and export operations, focusing on the export and domestic sales of Yunnan Pu-erh tea.
In 2004, the company established the Yunnan Haiwan Menghai Office in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna, covering an area of 10 acres. By this time, Haiwan Tea Industry had initially formed an integrated production pattern encompassing sourcing, processing, and sales. Each of the three companies plays its role: Anning Haiwan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. primarily focuses on producing Pu-erh tea; Yunnan Haiwan Tea Industry Co., Ltd. focuses on exports and domestic sales; and Menghai Haiwan Tea Industry Office primarily handles raw material procurement.
Although the history of Haiwan Tea Industry spans only a decade, the tea-making experience of Mr. Zou Bingliang and Mr. Lu Guoling encompasses two centuries. Under the guidance of these two tea experts, Haiwan Tea Industry has condensed two centuries of tea-making culture, allowing many to experience the purity, contemplation, and historical depth of Pu-erh tea. The goal of Haiwan Tea Industry is to “let more people drink authentic Pu-erh tea.”
Yunnan boasts a pleasant climate and fertile land, producing many subtropical plants, with a history of tea tree cultivation spanning over a thousand years. Tea is a pillar agricultural product of our province, and the historical development of Yunnan tea has shaped generations of tea masters, among whom Mr. Zou Bingliang and Mr. Lu Guoling stand out.
Since the 1950s and 1960s, these two gentlemen have worked diligently for the growth and development of Yunnan’s tea industry, both having served as directors of the Menghai Tea Factory. After retiring from the Menghai Tea Factory in 1997, they were appointed as the chief consultants for Pu-erh tea production at the Yunnan Tea Import and Export Company. In 1999, they joined forces with four investors to establish Anning Haiwan Tea Industry Co., Ltd., with a registered capital of 500,000 yuan and an area of 13 acres, commencing production in October of that year.
Every enterprise, whether consciously or unconsciously, ultimately develops its own cultural style. Culture can be shaped, but it cannot be entirely imitated. The formation of a company’s culture is closely related to its core figures or leadership team, alongside the characteristics of the industry it operates in. Their personalities and work styles play a crucial role in this process, especially during the early stages of the company’s development.
Our tea-making craft and philosophy have a long and profound heritage, encapsulating the spirit cultivated over generations by tea masters. This spirit continues to nourish every member of Haiwan Tea and permeates their lives, becoming their guiding principle. Mr. Zou Bingliang and Mr. Lu Guoling, former director and deputy director of Menghai Tea Factory, created a glorious era for the factory. Mr. Zou once remarked on the current hype surrounding Pu-erh tea, stating that it is the responsibility of tea masters to produce good tea and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of wealth or poverty. The essential needs of life—firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea—should not make Pu-erh tea a luxury only a select few can afford; to do so would be a disservice to our ancestors and a betrayal of our calling. In this commercial age, Mr. Zou maintains a perspective that prioritizes tea drinkers, a rare and admirable quality.
Yunnan Haiwan not only upholds tradition but also receives excellent market praise from Japan, Europe, and Hong Kong and Taiwan. The company’s research and development center continuously explores new products tailored to market demands, designing derivatives of Pu-erh tea that fit modern lifestyles. These aspects provide a glimpse into our approach. Haiwan’s team structure is well-rounded, with diverse ages, experiences, education levels, and backgrounds, fostering a vibrant and efficient team dynamic through mutual learning and exchange. Our company’s institutional design thoughtfully incorporates cultural considerations, reflecting unique elements absent in other enterprises. When you arrive at Haiwan, you will feel and experience all of this.
Profile
1957:
Mr. Zou began his career at the now-famous Menghai Tea Factory, marking the start of his lifelong relationship with tea. He studied at the Southwest Bureau of Inspection and the Kunming Bureau of Inspection, focusing on lead content testing and biochemical analysis of tea. He participated in a joint project by the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Bureau of Industry to develop graded black tea.
1973:
Yunnan Province sent Mr. Zou, a key technical personnel from Menghai Tea Factory, to Guangdong to study the “wet piling method” for producing Pu-erh tea. Upon returning, he formed a technical team with his colleagues to adapt this method to Yunnan’s unique conditions. Through extensive research and experimentation, they successfully developed the artificial fermentation process for Pu-erh tea, ushering in a new era of rapid development for Yunnan’s Pu-erh tea.
Following this, Mr. Zou authored the first set of teaching materials on Pu-erh tea production processes and operational procedures, further exploring the standardization of ripe Pu-erh tea production. He became a leading figure in the industry, earning the titles “Master of Pu-erh Tea” and “Father of Modern Ripe Pu-erh Tea.”
1984:
Mr. Zou was appointed Director of Menghai Tea Factory, where he established an integrated production, supply, and sales system, developing over 100,000 acres of new tea gardens and constructing 74 tea processing facilities. During this time, Yunnan’s tea industry operated under a state monopoly, primarily recognizing the “China Tea” brand. Recognizing the need for an independent brand to strengthen Menghai Tea Factory, Mr. Zou collaborated with factory leadership to create the “Dayi” brand trademark, which was successfully registered in 1989. The “Dayi” trademark became a significant intangible asset for Menghai Tea Factory.
1996:
In June, Mr. Zou was appointed as a consultant for the Yunnan Tea Import and Export Company. He officially retired from Menghai Tea Factory in January 1997. As one of the longest-serving directors in the factory’s history, he oversaw 11 consecutive years of growth in industrial output, profits, taxes paid, and employee income, establishing Menghai Tea Factory as a major taxpayer in Menghai County. His contributions earned him high recognition from the government and society, serving as a representative for the 7th and 8th People’s Congress of Menghai County, the 7th and 8th People’s Congress of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, and the 7th People’s Congress of Yunnan Province. In 1990, he was named an Outstanding Entrepreneur of Yunnan Province and became a council member of the first China Tea Culture Association. In 1995, he received the honor of “Best Image of Contemporary Chinese Entrepreneurs” from the China Enterprise Image Recognition Committee and the editorial committee of Contemporary Chinese Entrepreneurs.
1999:
After retirement, Mr. Zou remained passionate about tea and aimed to improve the production processes and quality of Pu-erh tea using modern techniques. Together with Mr. Lu Guoguan, a senior Pu-erh tea expert and former deputy director of Menghai Tea Factory, he co-founded Haiwan Tea Industry, where he served as chairman. Under the leadership of Mr. Zou and Mr. Lu, Haiwan Tea Industry evolved into a leading modern enterprise in Pu-erh tea, integrating raw material sourcing, fermentation, processing, and marketing. In May, Mr. Zou was appointed as an expert for the “Professional Evaluation Group” at the China 99 Kunming World Horticultural Exposition. He was also appointed as an expert for the first and second “Yun Tea Cup” awards in June of the same year and the following year.
2002:
Mr. Zou was appointed as an expert in the evaluation of internationally recognized Pu-erh tea products.
2006:
He was recognized as a “National Advanced Individual in Food Safety Engineering Technology.”
2007:
Mr. Zou was awarded the title of “Lifetime Achievement Master of Chinese Pu-erh Tea” at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
2008:
With the establishment of the International Tea Culture Exchange Association in Hong Kong, Mr. Zou was invited to serve as an advisor for the association.
